  • Cow characteristics associated with the variation in number of contacts between dairy cows
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Dairy Science. - : Elsevier Inc.. - 0022-0302 .- 1525-3198. ; 106:4, s. 2685-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In modern freestall barns where large groups of cows are housed together, the behavior displayed by herd mates can influence the welfare and production of other individuals. Therefore, understanding social interactions in groups of dairy cows is important to enhance herd management and optimize the outcomes of both animal health and welfare in the future. Many factors can affect the number of social contacts in a group. This study aimed to identify which characteristics of a cow are associated with the number of contacts it has with other group members in 2 different functional areas (feeding and resting area) to increase our understanding of the social behavior of dairy cows. Inside 2 herds housed in freestall barns with around 200 lactating cows each, cow positions were recorded with an ultra-wideband real-time location system collecting all cows' positions every second over 2 wk. Using the positioning data of the cows, we quantified the number of contacts between them, assuming that cows spending time in proximity to one another (within a distance of 2.5 m for at least 10 min per day) were interacting socially. We documented in which barn areas these interactions occurred and used linear mixed models to investigate if lactation stage, parity, breed, pregnancy status, estrus, udder health, and claw health affect the number of contacts. We found variation in the number of contacts a cow had between individuals in both functional areas. Cows in later lactation had more contacts in the feeding area than cows in early lactation. Furthermore, in one herd, higher parity cows had fewer contacts in the feeding area than first parity cows, and in the other herd, cows in third parity or higher had more contacts in the resting area. This study indicates that cow characteristics such as parity and days in milk are associated with the number of contacts a cow has daily to its herd mates and provides useful information for further research on social interactions of dairy cows.

  • Modification of the human-broiler relationship and its potential effects on production
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Acta Agriculturae Scandinavica, Section A - Animal Science. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0906-4702 .- 1651-1972. ; 66, s. 161-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study was designed to investigate the effects of additional human contact (AHC) on the human-animal relationship (HAR) in broilers and on the birds' productivity. A total of 1558 broiler one-day-old chicks were distributed into 12 equally sized pens at two different stocking densities (SDs), calculated on estimated weight at slaughter (4 pens with 32kg/m(2) and 8 pens with 16kg/m(2)). Six groups (2 high and 4 low SDs) received AHC, which consisted of 30-min sessions with visual human contact three days/week. The remaining six groups received as little human contact as possible and served as controls. A touch test was used to assess the human-broiler relationship and the production parameters measured were growth rate, mortality, feed consumption and feed conversion. The AHC treatment had a positive effect on the quality of the HAR but failed to affect any production parameter.

  • Parity and days in milk affect cubicle occupancy in dairy cows
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Applied Animal Behaviour Science. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 0168-1591 .- 1872-9045. ; 244
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern dairy cattle farms are usually equipped with cubicle systems to provide cows with comfortable conditions for lying down and resting. Cows are free to choose any cubicle they want, but in reality, they do not distribute themselves uniformly throughout the barn. There are many factors that affect where a cow lies down, such as hierarchy of a cow, access to resources, cow traffic nearby, etc. In this study, we used real-time location system data from two commercial farms to examine patterns of cubicle occupancy in relation to parity and lactation stage. We summarized cubicle occupancy over several days and compared different areas of the barn. Our findings suggest that, in general, there was a higher occupancy of cubicles close to the feeding areas. High parity cows lay down more frequently in cubicles close to the milking area as opposed to first lactation cows that tend to occupy less busy areas of the barn. The overall conclusion is that cubicle occupancy is not uniform throughout the barn, and patterns related to parity and DIM are seen. This information can be important for future studies on spread of diseases and for management purposes. © 2021 The Authors

  • Daily intake of fruit and vegetable soups processed in different ways increases human serum beta-carotene and lycopene concentrations and reduces levels of several oxidative stress markers in healthy subjects
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Food Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0308-8146 .- 1873-7072. ; 134:1, s. 127-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of daily intakes of two differently processed fruit and vegetable soups on beta-carotene and lycopene bioavailability, oxidative stress and cardiovascular risk biomarkers was investigated. An optimised soup produced using heat treatments and high pressure homogenisation for high nutrient retention, and a traditionally produced reference soup were tested. Serum beta-carotene concentration was significantly higher with the optimised than with the reference soup after the supplementation (0.41 +/- 0.05 vs. 0.24 +/- 0.03 mu M, respectively), whereas the serum lycopene concentration was higher in subjects consuming the reference (0.06 +/- 0.02 vs. 0.16 +/- 0.02 mu M). The change in serum homocysteine levels tended to be greater in the optimised group (-1.67 +/- 0.63 vs. 0.02 +/- 0.17 mu M, p = 0.06). Serum antioxidant enzyme activity decreased significantly with consumption of both soups, but to a greater extent with the optimised soup. The consumption of the fruit and vegetable soups increased serum beta-carotene and lycopene concentrations and reduced the levels of several oxidative stress makers, particularly in subjects consuming the optimised soup.

    • AimTo evaluate the effect of the daily intake of a fruit & vegetable soup with high in vitro bioaccessibility of carotenoids on β-carotene and lycopene serum concentrations.MethodsFourteen healthy young men (24 ± 1 years) received 300 mL/day of a carrot, tomato, and broccoli soup, containing 3.9 mg β-carotene and 4 mg lycopene, for 4 weeks followed by a 4-week washout period. The serum carotenoid response and oxidative markers were analyzed after 3 and 4 weeks of soup consumption and after a 4-week washout.ResultsThe in vitro bioaccessibility of β-carotene and lycopene was 55 and 43%, respectively, in the soup. Serum β-carotene concentrations were significantly higher than baseline (0.33 ± 0.05 μmol/L) after 3 weeks (0.69 ± 0.06 μmol/L) and 4 weeks (0.78 ± 0.10 μmol/L) of soup consumption (P

  • Cell-Based Assay To Quantify the Antioxidant Effect of Food-Derived Carotenoids Enriched in Postprandial Human Chylomicrons
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0021-8561 .- 1520-5118. ; 58:20, s. 10864-10868
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We developed a new method to evaluate the antioxidant effect of food products in a biological system. The antioxidant status of HepG2 cells was quantified after incubation with postprandial human chylomicrons after the intake of vegetable products. Three subjects consumed in a meal a vegetable soup containing 8.4 mg of beta-carotene and 9 mg of lycopene. After 5 h, the subjects consumed a second meal without carotenoids. Blood samples were collected at basal time and every hour for 9 h. Chylomicrons were isolated from serum samples and used for both carotenoid quantification and HepG2 stimulation. Carotenoid in chylomicrons followed an inter-individual and bimodal carotenoid response. We demonstrated the antioxidant effect of postprandial chylomicrons in HepG2 at the time of maximum carotenoid concentration of chylomicrons with respect to basal time. This cell-based assay seems to be a useful method to evaluate the antioxidant effect of fruit and vegetable products in a biological system.

  • Changes in carotenoid concentration in human postprandial chylomicrons and antioxidant effect in HepG2 caused by differently processed fruit and vegetable soups.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Food Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0308-8146 .- 1873-7072. ; 133:1, s. 38-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ten subjects consumed one serving of an optimised or a reference soup produced using modified or traditional processing methods, respectively. Both soups contained the same proportions of carrot, tomato and broccoli, but with 5% olive oil in the optimised soup and 2.5% in the reference soup. The β-carotene content in 600 mL of the optimised/reference soups was 4.10/2.90 mg, and the lycopene content was 3.90/2.71 mg. The β-carotene and lycopene concentrations in chylomicrons isolated from blood serum samples were similar for both groups. Only 50% of subjects could be considered as carotenoid responders and, in agreement with in vitro accessibility data, the β-carotene concentration in the chylomicrons of these subjects was significantly higher in the group consuming the optimised soup, while no changes were found for lycopene. Postprandial chylomicrons from the optimised soup group exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activity in HepG2 cells than the other group. The stimulation of HepG2 cells by human postprandial chylomicrons seems useful for evaluating the antioxidant effect of different food matrices. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
