  • Climate impact estimation – from feasibility study to handover
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IABSE Congress, Ghent 2021: Structural Engineering for Future Societal Needs. - Zurich, Switzerland : International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). ; , s. 622-628
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Responsible for 1/5 of the total CO2-equivalents emissions and 50% of the materials resources used globally, the construction industry plays a vital role for a sustainable future. All parties in the construction industry address the challenge from their perspective and national transport administrations are often considered as the driver toward a fossil free industry. In this study, three Swedish infrastructure projects are studied by means of interviews, focusing on the usage and acceptance of the recently implemented climate estimation process. From the interviews, it is found that currently there is a lack of knowledge regarding climate estimations among bridge and environmental specialists as well as project managers. To address this challenge, it is important to educate the industry and increase the knowledge about climate estimations and declarations as well as inform which actions have the largest impact to reduce the CO2-equivalents emissions.

  • Important parameters for increased productivity in bridge design and production
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IABSE Congress Nanjing 2022 - Bridges and Structures: Connection, Integration and Harmonisation, Report. ; , s. 80-88
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is great potential for increased productivity in the production of bridges in terms of optimizing material use, time and cost for design and production. Hence, the environmental impact and cost can be optimized. To find out how standardisation of parts of bridges and which parameters are of most importance for increased productivity in the production of bridges, a quantitate study was performed on the Swedish bridge construction industry. The questionnaire received 151 responses. The results show in which aspects and parameters the industry’s three major actors – engineers, contractors, and clients – see greatest potential in order to increase the productivity. By standardising parts in bridges, there is great potential in making the construction of bridges more productive.

  • Integrated project teams in early design stages - Key variables influencing cost effectiveness in bridge building
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 19th IABSE Congress Stockholm, 21-23 September 2016, Challenges in Design and Construction of an Innovative and Sustainable Built Environment. ; , s. 598-606
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The construction industry is usually regarded as a complex, multidisciplinary and project focused environment. It is also regularly identified as a one-of-a-kind nature, hence focus is on the uniqueness of projects rather than in similarities. The results presented in this article are based on questionnaire addressed to clients, contractors, and designers, mainly active within the Swedish infrastructure sector. The purpose is to highlight key-variables influencing cost effectiveness for the organization of integrated project teams, designing of projects, and construction at site. The results indicate that more attention needs to be paid to the actual project setting if to fully gain the benefits from integrated project teams. Further, the results indicates that it is mainly project culture; collaboration and social relationships, and project competence, the ability to solve mutual issues, that needs to be developed.

  • Structural Health Monitoring of RC structures using optic fiber strain measurements: a deep learning approach
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 20th Congress of IABSE, New York City 2019: The Evolving Metropolis - Report. ; 114
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports the early findings of an ongoing project aimed at developing new methods to upgrade the current maintenance strategies of the civil and transport infrastructure. As part of these new methods, the use of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms is being investigated to constitute the core of a new generation of more accurate and robust structural health monitoring (SHM) systems for concrete structures. Unlike most of the existing SHM systems, relying on the analysis of the natural frequencies of the structure based on data obtained from accelerometers, the present study uses a distributed optic fiber system to monitor the strain distribution along steel reinforcing bars. The preliminary results of the study indicate that a semi-supervised Deep Autoencoder algorithm (DAE) can successfully quantify the damage attributable to transverse cracks in a reinforced concrete beam subjected to three-point loading. Future applications will feature the determination of crack locations, early detection of reinforcement corrosion as well as other types of damage such as splitting cracks or surface spalling.

  • Mapping of resource consumption in transport infrastructure project - A case study of Bårhultsmotet
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: IABSE Congress Stockholm, 2016: Challenges in Design and Construction of an Innovative and Sustainable Built Environment. - CH - 8093 Zürich, Switzerland. ; 2016, s. 573-579, s. 573-579
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of the study is to 1) investigate the possibility to collect and present data of consumed human resources from all stakeholders over the project life cycle of transport infrastructure project; 2) discuss the use of such information with regard to the evaluation and suggestion for improvement of project performance. A well-defined engineering project, the interchange Bårhultsmotet consisting of two bridges over the route 40, was used as case study. A diagram presenting consumption of human resources over the project life cycle was constructed, starting at the initial project phase in the client organization and ending when the bridge was handed over for operation. The diagram raise a number of questions whether or not the time spent is value adding, especially between project phases considering the long lead times. The diagram also inspires to discussions of topics for further studies, for example the how to manage the gap (e.g. transfer/loss of information) between planning, design and construction phases in order to utilize the human resources more efficiently.
