- The school subject Physical Education and Health (PEH) has a wide scope with respect to its content, combining the aspects ‘sports’ and ‘health’. Previous studies have shown that for the Swedish school subject PEH, sports dominate the content of the subject in several aspects, as a result of, for instance, a vague and unspecific subject specific literacy used in the curricula and course books (Lundin & Schenker 2021, 2022; Lundin m. fl. 2021, 2023). This means that the health aspects of the subject are set aside. In this study, we present another possible cause to the fact that health aspects are not as prominent as sports aspects, although health has been a part of the Swedish school subject PEH since 1994 (Lpo94): the health part of the name of the subject Idrott och hälsa [sport and health] is hardly ever used when the subject is mentioned in press and newspaper material during these 30 years. The result is important since the eye influences and affects the mind: if the eyes of the readers only meet idrott and idrottslärare [sports teacher], this affects the ideas of the school subject and its content.

- In modern Swedish, the word typ has a number of functions and meanings. Until about 1930, typ had, however, only a nominal function, and the other uses of typ have accordingly developed successively during the 20th century. In this article, which is based on a paper by Skärlund (2010), we track the grammaticalization of typ by utilizing electronic corpora, mainly comprising Swedish newspaper texts from 1838 to 2009. Contexts where typ was preceded by the preposition av (‘of’) allowed for a reanalysis which gave rise to the two-word preposition av typ, which notably first was used only to designate different types of military aircraft. The next step in the grammaticalization is the univerbation of av typ, where av is dropped and typ appears in isolation as a preposition. This usage becomes frequent during the 1970s, and about two decades later typ also appears as an adverb. In the beginning of the 21th century, we then find the first instances of typ used as a discourse particle. The grammaticalization of typ is a recent phenomenon and can as such be followedin great detail in the written sources. This case study is hence both valid and reliable, in comparison with grammaticalization research focussing on older languages or languages without extant written records, and we argue that the grammaticalization of typ gives support to the view that this type of language change depends on interaction between syntactic reanalyses and semantic reinterpretations, as suggested by Rosenkvist (2005).

- Public language is generally considered to have become more informal in the Western world in the past few decades. The same holds true for Swedish public language and the language of Swedish newspapers in particular. However, two former studies of opinion articles in five Swedish newspapers revealed that the language used in this genre was surprisingly unchanged during the time period 1945–2000. This article replicates the two former studies by analysing 36 Swedish opinion articles from 2015 from a quantitative perspective. The results of the analysis are then compared to those of the earlier studies to see if, and to what extent, tendencies of informalization have now become noticeable in the opinion articles. It is demonstrated that there are indeed signs of informalization in the articles from 2015. Words and sentences have become shorter, colloquial expressions (such as swear words) are used, and both incomplete sentences and personal pronouns in first and second person are more frequent than before. On the other hand, subordinate clauses are more common in the articles from 2015 than in 1985–2000. Since subordinate clauses in former studies of Swedish have been considered a formal trait, this is quite unexpected. In the article, it is argued that the connection between subordination and formal language is more complex than has sometimes previously been acknowledged –, and that subordinate clauses have different functions, not all of them characterizing a formal style.
