    • This dissertation is a study of four Swedish publishing houses and the serialized fiction they published between 1833 and 1851. The focus is on Lars Johan Hierta’s Läsebibliothek (Readers’ Library) 1833–1851, N.H. Thomson’s Kabinetsbibliothek (Home Library) 1835–1846 and Nya Svenska Parnassen (New Swedish Parnassus) 1847–1848, Östlund & Berling’s Originalbibliothek (Original Library) 1845–1851 and Albert Bonnier’s Europeiska Följetongen (European Series) 1846–1851. Serialized fiction is defined for the purposes of this study as a series of novels published in parts on a weekly basis over the course of a year. This method enabled publishers to keep prices down and entice new readers as subscribers to the series. The concept was so successful that by 1850 two-thirds of the prose fiction published in Sweden took this form. Thus the publishers had found an effective, new channel for the circulation of fiction.For Hierta, the series served as the cornerstone of successful publishing activities. His printing press was mainly used for the publication of a daily newspaper called Aftonbladet, but his Läsebibliothek was also a cutting-edge product for reaching the general public. Hiertas’s series was mainly of translated fiction from French and English, and his most popular author was Edward Bulwer Lytton. Thomson took up competition for translated fiction in his Kabinetsbibliothek, but he gradually included more and more original Swedish fiction, his most popular author being Emilie Flygare-Carlén. Before phasing out his activities, Thomson started a series with only renowned Swedish authors, Nya Svenska Parnassen. One of his reasons for terminating his publishing activities was that a Norrköping publishing house, Östlund & Berling, began to compete with him on the Swedish fiction market, and managed to lure Flygare-Carlén over to their Originalbibliothek. Hierta, too, saw a new competitor in Albert Bonnier, who began publishing Europeiska Följetongen. Bonnier’s series included many of the most popular European authors, taken mainly from contemporary French serialized fiction.The demise of serialized fiction in Sweden was largely attributed to increased costs for postal distribution. Beginning in the mid-1840s, these series had had the advantage of being distributed postage-free, at only a low “stamp duty”. This fee wad doubled in 1851, which led to changes and gradual abandonment of the form. For a little less than two decades, serialized fiction had comprised the core of Swedish fiction publishing, and it had also gradually become the forum in which a large number of authors saw their first works published. This study therefore includes a sociological analysis of the forty-two Swedish authors whose works were included in the various series, and the analysis indicates that most of them found themselves in a position where it was becoming possible to make their livings writing for the increasingly commercialized book market. Authors had begun to write for the market, and the market opened up to them. Professional translators were also needed to keep the series running. Above all, thanks to the publishers of serialized fiction, Swedish authors were able to reach larger audiences during this period of transition when the novel was truly becoming an everyday commodity.

  • Hyperworks : On Digital Literature and Computer Games

    • This study investigates the effects of digitization on literature and literary culture with focus on works of literary fiction and other kinds of works inspired by such works. The concept of “hyperworks” refers to works intended to be navigated multisequentially, i.e. the users create their own paths through the work by making choices. The three articles that make up the dissertation include analyses of individual works as well as discussions of theoretical models and concepts. The study combines perspectives from several theoretical traditions: narratology, hypertext theory, ludology (i.e., game studies), sociology of literature, textual criticism, media theory, and new media studies.The first article examines narrative technique and aspects of ergodicity in the digital hyperwork afternoon, a story (1997) by Michael Joyce. The main focus is on an analysis of the work’s structural organization and narrative technique.The second article proposes a theoretical framework for the analysis of texts and works in different media, especially focusing on the media structure (i.e. linking, navigation, storage, presentation, etc.)The third article analyzes and describes the ludolization, i.e., transposition into game form, of J. K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997). The study is a comparative analysis of the PC version of the computer game Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) and the original novel, and discusses the media structure and the narrative/ludic structure of the two works.The concepts of ergodicity, cybertext, and content space are especially central to the study. Among the new concepts introduced are omnidiscourse, omnistory, performed discourse, performed story, lateral structure, hyperliterary competence, core ludic sequence, and performed ludic sequence. Also, a method for the analysis and description of links, i.e. a linkology, is presented along with new terms such as linkarium, ancoral text, adlink, and exlink.

  • Svensk-franska förhandlingar : Bland sprätthökar och franska flugor i svenskt 1700-tal

    • Den här avhandlingen tar till syfte att närmare förklara hur det i svensk 1700-talslitteratur vanligt förekommande satiriska porträtterandet av en landsman som har låtit sig påverkas av fransk kultur, i seder, språk och mode, på sådant sätt att han har blivit en ”sprätthök”, utgör en kritik av det franska kulturinflytandet. Avhandlingen visar också hur det kritiska förhållningssättet till det franska kulturinflytandet, som kanaliseras i beskrivningarna av sprätthöksfigurens förfranskade later, är inbegripet i diskurser om nationell tillhörighet, kultur, moral och språk. Det åberopade källmaterialet, till större delen från perioden 1720-1772, består av varjehanda moralsatirisk litteratur, varav sedekomedier och moraliska veckoskrifter utgör kärnan i analysen.Den analytiska delen av avhandlingen är indelad i tre större kapitel. Det första analsykapitlet tar itu med hur sprätthöksfiguren definieras i källmaterialet. Dessutom visar kapitlet hur resandet till Frankrike och i synnerhet till staden Paris, samtidigt som det ingår i tidens allmänt hållna kritik mot unga adelsmäns bildningsresande, utpekas som förklaringen till att svenskar omskapas till förfranskade sprätthökar. Det andra analyskapitlet visar hur sprätthökarna kan sägas förkroppsliga de stereotypiska föreställningarna om en moraliskt fördärvlig fransk nationalkaraktär och därigenom bidra till konstruktionen av motbilden till en svensk, dygdig och positiv nationalkaraktär. Det tredje analyskapitlet behandlar de språkideologiska motiv och den kritik mot en förfranskad umgängeskultur som kan utläsas i åsikterna om och beskrivningarna av sprätthökarnas språkbruk.

    • Etnologen Barbro Klein (1938-2018) arbetade i 40 år med en bok om sin far Gustav Arklinds muntliga berättande. Han var en lysande historieberättare som kunde få familjemedlemmar och utomstående att vrida sig av skratt. Till grund för undersökningen ligger de bandinspelningar som dottern Barbro gjorde på 1970- och 80-talen. Hon studerar vad som sägs och hur det sägs, men också det dynamiska samspelet mellan talaren Gustav och hans åhörare. Hon pekar på likheter mellan hans historier och texter av samtida svenska författare som Astrid Lindgren. Den långa tillkomsttiden har lett till att boken blivit mycket mer än författaren ursprungligen tänkte sig. Förutom den etnografiska studien formar sig texten till en biografi över fadern Gustav, den utfattige pojken från södra Småland som gick till sjöss vid tretton års ålder. Gustavs levnadsöden vävs samman med det svenska folkhemmets framväxt, och samtidigt med författarens – dottern och etnologen Barbro Kleins – egen historia och sökande.

  • "Strunt alt hvad du orerar" : Carl Michael Bellman, ordensretoriken och Bacchi Orden

    • The 1760's and 1770's saw the emergence of numerous clubs, orders and societies in Stockholm. One of the most extraordinary expressions of this phenomenon was Carl Michael Bellman's Bacchi Orden, a series of semi-public dramatic entertainments chronicling the exploits of the members of Bacchi Orden, a fictional society enrolling several of Stockholm's most notorious drunkards and dedicated to the celebration of Bacchus. Bellman's parodic perspective stands in marked contrast to the self-professed virtuous undertakings of Stockholm's contemporary clubs and orders, whose members were recruited from the social and economic elites and professional and artisanal classes. The main purpose of the dissertation was to study the ceremonial rhetorical practices of Bacchi Orden - speeches, processions and other features designed to enhance the members' loyalty to the society's chosen ideal - and compare them to similar rhetorical traits in several orders and societies of the era in Stockholm to understand what made Bellman's parody work as an entertainment.The dissertation consists of three chapters. The first chapter introduces Bacchi Orden as a parodic and dramatic work and the eighteenth-century associations as cultural and social institutions. The second chapter outlines the use of ceremonial rhetoric in a number of orders and societies in Stockholm contemporary with Bacchi Orden. Through a combined chronological and thematic approach, the third chapter examines recurring rhetorical patterns in Bellman's parody and the rhetorical implications these patterns might have signaled to his audicence.The ceremonial rhetorical practices of Bacchi Orden may be interpreted as parodying rhetorical commonplaces occuring in all the examined orders' pledges to uphold certain virtues for the benefit of the Swedish nation. This system of virtues - with moderation, patriotism and diligence as cornerstones - is put to parodic use in Bacchi Orden through the different breaches of decorum Bellman allows his characters to act out in their doomed endeavors to combine ceremonial protocol and severe intoxication. As a contrast, friendly and frank companionship among the selected few is the one positive virtue that Bellman's audience can infer from his mock-society. This particular tenet became central to subsequent social clubs, which used Bellman's fiction as a template for their ceremonies.

  • Komediant och riksförrädare : Handskriftcirkulerade smädeskrifter mot Gustaf III

    • The opposition against Gustavus III (1746–1792) had limited access to the printing press, but managed to spread a variety of political pamphlets through clandestine manuscripts. The main purpose of the dissertation is to analyse this communication and thereby enhance our understanding of the political culture of the period. The manuscript published oppositional works against Gustavus III have hitherto been little explored. With source material consisting of 120 manuscript libels, this study makes use of three interrelated methodological perspectives: media analysis, rhetorical analysis and analysis of ideas. The combination of media studies and classical rhetoric is inspired by the works of Peter Burke. Questions of production, distribution and consumption frame the discussions. The libels – published anonymously for fear of persecution – were spread through what Harold Love calls “user publication”. This means that many readers contributed to their distribution and through the act of copying also functioned as co-authors. The majority of the libels originated among the estate of the nobility and their political allies. The authors were often accomplished writers, skilfully using a variety of rhetorical strategies to interest and entertain their readers. When viewed in an international context, the Swedish material is revealed as relatively conservative. The arguments in the Swedish works were generally founded on established and traditional values and ideas, and treated Monarchy and Lutheran Christianity as given institutions which stood unquestioned. In comparison to French libels against royalty, Swedes were also more reluctant to use sexual slander. One explanation for this conservatism is that the authors were aiming for a wide audience, and therefore strove to ground their arguments in common values. Another explanation can be found in the fact that many of the works originated within the noble classes: a privileged group which had much to gain from the preservation of traditional social structures.
