    • We study branes and open strings in a large class of orbifold backgrounds using microscopic techniques of boundary conformal field theory. In particular, we obtain factorizing operator product expansions of open string vertex operators for such branes. Applications include branes in orbifolds of the SU(2) WZW model and in the D-series of unitary minimal models considered previously by Runkel.

    • The free energy of ABJM theory has previously been computed in the strong and weak coupling limits. In this note, we report on results for the computation of the first non-vanishing quantum correction to the free energy, from the field theory side. The correction can be expressed in terms of a thermal mass for the scalar fields. This mass vanishes to 1-loop order, but there is a non-vanishing result to 2-loop order. Hence, the leading correction to the free energy is non-analytic in the 't Hooft coupling constant lambda. The reason is that the infrared divergences necessitate a resummation of ring diagrams and a related reorganization of perturbation theory, in which already the leading correction receives contributions from all orders in lambda. These results suggest that the free energy interpolates smoothly between weak and strong coupling.

    • We study thermodynamics of N = 6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory by computing quantum corrections to the free energy. We find that in weakly coupled ABJM theory on R-2 x S-1, the leading correction is non-analytic in the 't Hooft coupling lambda, and is approximately of order lambda(2) log(lambda)(3). The free energy is expressed in terms of the scalar thermal mass m, which is generated by screening effects. We show that this mass vanishes to 1-loop order. We then go on to 2-loop order where we find a finite and positive mass squared m(2). We discuss differences in the calculation between Coulomb and Lorentz gauge. Our results indicate that the free energy is a monotonic function in lambda which interpolates smoothly to the N-3/2 behaviour at strong coupling.

    • We discuss various aspects of D-branes in string theory and holography in string theory and loop quantum gravity.One way to study D-branes is from a microscopic perspective, using conformal field theory techniques. For example, we investigate the question of how D-branes can be introduced into orbifolded theories. Another way to study D-branes is from a space-time perspective. An example is provided by unstable D-branes, where we compute an effective action describing the decay of a bosonic D-brane.The holographic principle is a proposed duality which suggests that a theory in any region has a dual description on the boundary. We explore two examples: (1) The area law for the entropy of a black hole in the framework of loop quantum gravity, related to particular regularizations of the area operator. (2) The AdS/CFT correspondence proposal, where we investigate a string pulsating on AdS using spin chains.
