  • Enabling design
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Ergonomics for Rehabilitation Professionals. - Boca Raton : CRC Press. - 9780849381461 ; , s. 477-506
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Designed to meet the diverse needs of therapists, this book presents a new approach to rehabilitation that integrates ergonomics concepts to address the wide range of problems commonly encountered by professionals. The first section addresses general concepts such as anthropometry and tissue mechanics. The next section explores whole body biomechanics, demonstrating the ergonomic effects of physiological and biomechanical factors. The third section focuses on regional biomechanics, explaining the rationale for ergonomic intervention. The final section of the text offers with a detailed discussion of the ergonomic paradigm in rehabilitation, including the use of physical demands analysis.

  • A hand-ergonomics training kit: development and evaluation of a package to support improved awareness and critical thinking
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Applied Ergonomics. - 1872-9126. ; 33:1, s. 39-49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A need for a hand-ergonomics training kit has been identified to increase critical thinking concerning choice of hand tools. This study deals with the design, use and evaluation of a hand-ergonomics training kit for use in ergonomics training programmes. The effects on awareness of hand ergonomics among training course participants have been evaluated by means of a questionnaire and interviews at a car production plant in Sweden. The evaluation was carried out about one and a half years after training with the hand-ergonomics training kit. The training kit consists of a guide to practical exercises, equipment for measuring hand size and strength, examples of hand tools for use in practical exercises, equipment for testing and evaluating the hand tools and checklists and judgement forms for qualitative evaluation. In addition, the kit contains relevant scientifically based reference reports on hand ergonomics. The evaluation showed that the practical exercises with the hand-ergonomic training kit had, to a remarkable extent, increased individuals' awareness of anthropometric differences and of the importance of ergonomically well-designed hand tools. After the practical exercises with the training kit, communication within the plant when choosing hand tools seems to be based on objective criteria to a higher degree, however, the results indicate that this communication could be further improved. • A control handling comfort model based on fuzzy logics
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. - 0169-8141. ; 31:2, s. 87-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The car interior is a complex man-machine interface. Poor interior design contributes to traffic accidents as well as discomfort and disorders in professional and long distance drivers. When buying a car comfort is for many customers an important factor. Consequently, car interior comfort besides safety is of great importance when designing cars. Comfort is a subjective feeling and hard to model mathematically. The aim of this paper is to show the feasibility with fuzzy logics to model relations between human perception, human characteristics and workplace structure. A model where drivers' perceived comfort when handling interior controls is in relation to anthropometrics and control positions are used as illustration. A series of control reach studies in simulated car driving was used for the development of a comfort model. Combined with a human simulation program the comfort model may be used by car designers at an early stage of the design process for evaluation of design concepts aiming at reachable and manageable controls in a safe and comfortable interior. The comfort model illustrates that fuzzy logics provides a constructive way of turning qualities into mathematics.

  • Annie, a Tool for Integrating Ergonomics in the Design of Car Interiors
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials & Manufacturing. ; 108:5, s. 1114-1124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this ANNIE project – Applications of Neural Networks to Integrated Ergonomics – BE96-3433, a tool for integrating ergonomics into the design process is developed. This paper presents some features in the current ANNIE as applied to the design of car interiors. A variant of the ERGOMan mannequin with vision is controlled by a hybrid system for neuro-fuzzy simulation. It is trained by using an Elite system for registration of movements. An example of a trajectory generated by the system is shown. A fuzzy model is used for comfort evaluation. An experiment was performed to test its feasibility and it showed very promising results.

  • Mannequin Properties Desired for Ergonomic Evaluation of Car Interiors
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 43-48
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mannequin properties desired for ergonomic evaluation of car interiors Lars Hansson, Kenneth Holmqvist, Simon Sjölander, Giovanni Distante, Guiseppe Andreoni, Nicholas Colford, Tomas Engström, Gert-Åke Hansson, Roland Kadefors, Patric Petersson, Camilla Rigotti, Lena Sperling, Anders Sundin, Per Östman, Roland Akselsson The aim of this study was to simulate a future mannequin with real people in order to find characteristics necessary for ergonomic evaluation of comfort in car interiors. We argue that the mannequin should ideally perform natural movements, collision detection, a biomechanical model, and eyes. Optional improvements to the mannequin involve muscles and a heart. We also discuss the user interface to the mannequin and means to present mannequin data.

  • Preferred car driving posture using 3-D information
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Vehicle Design. - 1741-5314. ; 42:1-2, s. 154-169
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Few studies have presented three-dimensional car-driving postural information. This laboratory study investigated drivers' preferred postures, preferred interior dimensions and how they characterise their postures. The minimum-maximum intervals of preferred angles corresponded well with other experimental studies and were larger than intervals for comfort, strength and alertness defined on the basis of theoretical reasoning. No preferred posture differences were found between females and males; nor were differences found when comparing posture after five and twenty minutes of driving. Preferred posture was not symmetric: significant differences were found between the left and right side. Subjects characterised their posture as comfortable, relaxing and restful.
