  • Older persons' experiences of a home-based exercise program with behavioral change support
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physiotherapy Theory and Practice. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0959-3985 .- 1532-5040. ; 33:12, s. 905-913
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: It is a challenge to promote exercise among older persons. Knowledge is needed regarding the maintenance of exercise aiming at preventing falls and promoting health and well-being in older persons.Purpose: This descriptive study used a qualitative inductive approach to describe older persons' experiences of a fall-preventive, home-based exercise program with support for behavioral change. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 elderly persons aged 75years or older, and a qualitative content analysis was performed. Results: Four categories emerged: facilitators of performing exercise in everyday life, the importance of support, perceived gains from exercise, and the existential aspects of exercise. Conclusion: With support from physiotherapists (PTs), home-based exercise can be adapted to individual circumstances in a meaningful way. Including exercises in everyday life and daily routines could support the experience of being stronger, result in better physical functioning, and give hope for an extended active life in old age.

  • Civil Society Organisations in National and Local welfare: Investigating three metropolitan areas in Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Paper presented at the ISTR conference in Stockholm, 28 June - 1 Aug 2016..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Voluntary organizations as well as market based for-profit actors have generally held a marginal position in producing welfare services for the larger population and in Sweden the main role and function for voluntary sector organizations has been to act as political agents (Lundström & Svedberg 2003; Svedberg & Olsson 2010; Wollebeak & Selle 2008; Selle & Wollebaek 2010). Recent research however stresses that this balance is changing in terms of gradual shifts ‘from voice to service’ or ‘from members to volunteers’ and an increase in professionalization among voluntary organizations (Wijkström & Einarsson 2006; Papakostas 2004; Svedberg & Olsson 2010). Financial support has been steered towards fulfilling public goods and politically defined usage (‘value for money’) and less as support for organizational development (Danielsson et al 2009). Whereas such model changes are discussed in several European countries few studies seek to investigate changing governance mo dels and state-voluntary sector relations at local level, despite it is at local level policies are put into practise. In this paper we explore local welfare systems as reconditions for the structure, size and roles of civil society organizations operating within the social welfare field. A specific aim is to analyze how local governments affect the local settings for civil society organizations, which includes providing explanations on variations among municipalities. The paper draws on case studies in the three metropolitan cities in Sweden (Stockholm, Gothenburg and M almö) and shows similarities between the cities local policies and governance arrangements, yet quite different policies and governance arrangements regarding their role as producing social services. The City of Malmö follows a Social democratic model with limited outsourcing and contracting out and involvement of CSOs as service providers. The City of Gothenburg follows a coportaist model in which a few CSOs are selected as providers. The City of Stockholm has developed a liberal market-oriented model in which CSOs are expected to compete with companies. The results of the case studies illuminate that importance of supplementing the national level analysis with analysis of local welfare systems. The article contributes to our understanding of local governments role as orchestrators of the CSOs and also to our understanding of the development of local welfare systems.

  • Local civil society regimes : Liberal, corporatist and social democratic civil society regimes in Swedish metropolitan cities
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Voluntary Sector Review. - Bristol, England : Policy Press. - 2040-8056 .- 2040-8064. ; 9:1, s. 3-20:On line 08 March, s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Academic debates on the role and position of civil society organisations (CSOs) in welfare states largely refer to policies and practices outlined at the national level. They therefore fail to recognise variations within nations. Based on a comparative case study of three Swedish metropolitan cities, this article illustrates the importance of local, contextualised analyses. Through the concept of local civil society regimes, the study identifies three regime types, namely liberal, corporatist and social democratic. The key distinguishing factor between them relates to their different ideological positions regarding the role of CSOs in the marketisation and privatisation of public social welfare represented at the local level. The article argues for the need for further analysis to explore the implications of decentralisation from the perspective of local CSOs and their constituencies.

  • Reframing everyday occupation in the context of migration: Drawing on projects in Gothenburg & Stockholm
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Occupation Diversity for the Future, 9th COTEC congress of Occupational therapy, 24 - 27 may, Stockholm.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction: The topic of migration concerns many people with an immediate impact on culture, politics, education, and healthcare around the world. The geographical mobility associated with migration arguably challenges the form, function, and meaning of everyday occupations and thus has a direct impact upon peoples health. This workshop will tackle some of these topics by drawing on a series of ongoing community and intervention projects. Aims: to explore topics of everyday occupations in the context of migration from multiple perspectives. Methods: workshop consists of short presentations followed by groupwork. Outcomes: at the end of this workshop, participants will have: 1) Reflected on challenges concerning research in areas of migration and occupational therapy/occupational science, 2) applied concepts of diversity to own practice, 3) applied concepts and ideas from presentations through groupwork with a WFOT position paper, and 4) initiated contact with occupational therapists from around the world who share common interests.

  • An explorative study of Sudanese midwives' motives, perceptions and experiences of re-infibulation after birth
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Midwifery. - 0266-6138 .- 1532-3099. ; 20:4, s. 299-311
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: to explore Sudanese midwives' motives for and perceptions and experiences of re-infibulation after birth and to elucidate its context and determinants. DESIGN: triangulation of methods, using observational techniques and open-ended interviews. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: two government hospitals in Khartoum/Omdurman, Sudan, for the observations and in-depth interviews with 17 midwives. FINDINGS: midwives are among the major stakeholders in the performance of primary female genital cutting (FGC) as well as re-infibulation. Focusing on re-infibulation after birth, midwives were trying to satisfy differing, and sometimes contradictory, perspectives. The practice of re-infibulation (El Adel) represented a considerable source of income for the midwives. The midwives integrated the practice of re-infibulation into a greater whole of doing well for the woman, through an endeavour to increase her value by helping her to maintain her marriage as well as striving for beautification and completion. They were also trying to meet socio-cultural requests, dealing with pressure from the family while balancing on the edge of the law. KEY CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: the findings confirm that midwives are important stakeholders in perpetuating re-infibulation, and indicate that the motives are more complex than being only economic. The constant balancing between demands from others puts the midwives in a difficult position. Midwives' potential role to influence views in the preventative work against FGC and re-infibulation should be acknowledged in further abolition efforts.

  • The pp → ppπ0 reaction near the kinematical threshold
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 356:1, s. 8-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The reaction pp → ppπ0 has been measured using electron-cooled protons incident on an internal gas-jet target at seven different incident beam energies, from 280.7 MeV (1 MeV above the reaction threshold) up to 310.2 MeV. The pions were measured by their decay photons. In the overlapping energy region, the measured total cross sections agree with those measured in a recent Indiana experiment. The angular distributions are consistent with a 3P0 → 1S0S0 transition in the full energy range studied. The kinematical distributions are well described when taking into account the final state and the Coulomb interactions.

  • Detector setup for a storage ring with an internal target
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002 .- 1872-9576. ; 379:1, s. 57-75
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A detector setup for the cooler storage ring CELSIUS is described. The setup detects particles produced in interactions between the internal beam and a cluster-jet target. Particles emitted in the forward direction are measured by means of arrays of plastic scintillators and proportional counters. Particles, particularly photons, emitted more isotropically are measured by means of two calorimeters containing CsI(Na) crystals. The performance of the setup is given for neutral meson production in proton-proton and proton-deuteron interactions in the energy range 290-1360 MeV.
