  • Management learning and the unsettled humanities : Introduction to the special issue
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Management Learning. - : SAGE Publications. - 1350-5076 .- 1461-7307. ; 52:2, s. 135-143
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This special issue engages with the unsettling of the humanities to further explore its relevance for management learning and education. It explores how themes traditionally belonging to the humanities have spurred critical inquiry and raised theoretical issues within other disciplines, following the crisis of the classical humanist ideal as ‘the measure of all things’. It focuses on how the tensions resulting from this crisis can be constructively thematized in the field of management and organization studies, and how the unsettling of the humanities’ privileged access to studying the ‘especially human’ can be taken into the classroom. In this manner, the special issue engages with questions related to the Anthropocene, posthumanism and transhumanism, and raises issues concerning the human possibilities for knowing, learning and living in entangled ways. Additionally, it helps us understand the critical role of the humanities in making sense of the reciprocities between imagination, information and the human crafting of meaningful knowledge.

  • A meta-ethical perspective on organizational identity
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Ethics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0167-4544 .- 1573-0697. ; 94:3, s. 427-440
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although much of the growing literature on organizational identity implicitly recognizes the normative nature of identity, the ethical implications of organizational identity work and talk have not yet been explored in depth. Working from a meta-ethical perspective, we claim that the dynamic, processual, and temporal activities recently associated with organizational identity always have an ethical dimension, whether "good" or "bad." In order to describe the ethical dimensions of organizational identity, we introduce the balance theory of practical wisdom as a theoretical framework, and connect this theory to existing organizational identity concepts. We present an empirical case focused on an international paint company to illustrate the relevance of this theory for empirical organizational identity research. Our intention is to expand existing theory by bringing an aspect of organizational identity that has been tangentially acknowledged to the forefront, and by identifying it as a fruitful avenue for future theory development as well as empirical research. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

  • Playing seriously with strategy
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Long range planning. - : Elsevier BV. - 0024-6301 .- 1873-1872. ; 37:6, s. 549-568
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article details two cycles of interventions and reflection in various executive development contexts led by the authors as facilitator/consultants. Their hunch that changing the constraints of strategy processes would also change the content generated was tested by changing the typical mode of work to that of 'serious play' and modifying the usual medium from verbal, computer and two-dimensional text and graphic by the introduction of 3-D media (LEGO bricks). The authors examine the potential for using serious play in the particular organizational challenge of making strategy, and highlight the capacity of 'action research' to contribute simultaneously to both academic understanding and practical value. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. • Dear prudence : An essay on practical wisdom in strategy making
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Social Epistemology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0269-1728 .- 1464-5297. ; 21:2, s. 151-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • If we presume an organizational ontology of complex, dynamic change, then what role remains for strategic intent? If managerial action is said to consist of adaptive responsiveness, then what are the foundations of value on the basis of which strategic decisions can be made? In this essay, we respond to these questions and extend the existing strategy process literature by turning to the Aristotelian concept of prudence, or practical wisdom. According to Aristotle, practical wisdom involves the virtuous capacity to make decisions and take actions that promote the "good life" for the "polis". We explore contemporary interpretations of this concept in literature streams adjacent to strategy and determine that practical wisdom can be developed by engaging in interpretative dialogue and aesthetically-rich experience. With these elements in view, we re-frame strategy processes as occasions to develop the human capacity for practical wisdom.

  • Performing strategy : Analogical reasoning as strategic practice
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management 2006 Annual Meeting: Knowledge, Action and the Public Concern, AOM 2006.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analogical reasoning refers to the successful transfer of structural similarities from a source to a target domain. In strategic management research, this concept has materialized in approaches such as strategic mapping. Yet, the concept and its application seem to have emphasized primarily the cognitive aspects of analogical reasoning. Bourdieu's concept of practice allows us to explore analogical reasoning in a more integral manner, i.e., by presenting embodied aspects of analogical reasoning as complementary to the cognitive aspects, and equally relevant for strategic organizational development processes. Thus, we conceptualize analogical reasoning as a practice of strategy and illustrate this concept with an empirical case.

  • Performing strategy - Analogical reasoning as strategic practice
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 24:2, s. 133-144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of analogical reasoning refers to the successful transfer of structural similarities from a source to a target domain of knowledge. Organizational research focused exclusively on the cognitive aspects of analogical reasoning remains limited however, in its capacity to describe the function and effects of analogical reasoning within the organizational contexts where it occurs. This paper extends existing theory of analogical reasoning by drawing on the concept of practice as it has been developed by strategy-as-practice researchers. In particular, we suggest that in addition to cognition, analogical reasoning involves social structuration and embodied performance. By re-framing analogical reasoning as a strategic practice, we provide the emerging field of strategy-as-practice research with a new analytical lens through which to view the micro-level activities associated with strategizing. The paper includes an empirical case to illustrate the suggested contribution to theory, and it closes with a discussion of implications for future strategy-as-practice theory and research. © 2008.
