  • Omsorgsfylld landsbygd : Rumsliga perspektiv på åldrande och omsorg på den svenska landsbygden
  • 2014
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of this thesis is to study the intersection of rural areas, ageing and care. It is  based on interviews with elderly and caregivers carried out in the municipality of Heby in the middle of Sweden. Care is given a broad definition and includes help with many daily activities given by family members, the public sector, the private sector, voluntary organisations and neighbours. The studied rural area is described as filled with care, as there exist people with care needs and caregivers from several sectors. Together the elderly and their caregivers create a landscape of care which they strive to describe as characterized by mutual dependency and carefulness, as well as created between formal and informal relationships. The different care givers are dependent on, complement and sometimes exclude each other. With an increasing trend with ageing in place, the own home is becoming more Important for the rural aged. This creates special careneeds, and reshapes the home physically and gives it and the local community a specific meaning. The own home and its surroundings are seen as consisting of physical features, social relationships and memories of the lived life. The own home is both seen as a place where the elderly can be independent and as a place where they are dependent, which defines the home as a contradictory place. The study wants to contribute to a more developed theoretical understanding of the rural with an age and care perspective. Above all it is stressed that the rural is filled with care relations. Also it is stated that the elderly live in a constantly changing rural society and that the rural is placed between a material and social understanding respectively between the concepts of periphery and center.

  • Närheter och avstånd i ett nordvärmländskt skogslandskap : Praktiker och betydelser i nya tidsrumsliga sammanhang
  • 2015
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This thesis examines the contemporary forest landscape of northern Värmland in Sweden in terms of practices, meanings and time-space relations. The increasing urbanization worldwide also affects the countryside landscape to produce what is generally referred to as  “new ruralities”, which are the result of changed conditions for livelihood and leisure. What does the concept new ruralities mean in relation to the sparsely populated forest landscape of northern Värmland, Sweden? The thesis adopts a relational approach to landscape, which means that landscape entails and forms relations between the material, the immaterial, and the human. Landscapes stretches out in time and space, which means that they rests on and progresses from layers of earlier and contemporary activities. Landscape practices and meanings are therefore important for understanding changes as well as continuities in the context of new ruralities. Inspired by the Heideggerian basic assumption about dwelling the thesis methodologically draws on phenomenology, but also on ethnography to clarify the relation between the individual and the society. Interviews, field studies and participant observations with special focus on the settlement, community engagement, and forest and hunting were conducted in four parishes in northern Värmland.Proximity and distance turn out to be the common denominators in the meanings of the forest landscape that emerge from the study, but attention is also clearly drawn to the problems of depopulation, changing social relations, and the tension between the private and the common good. The new ruralities of the northern Värmland forest landscape seem to rest on the tension between flow and fixity, between change and continuity, as traditional practices are performed with new meanings and extended time-space relations.

  • Storskalig vindkraft i skogen : Om rationell planering och lokalt motstånd
  • 2016
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The global climate threat has intensified Sweden’s ambitions to build wind power stations. This thesis explores the planning of, and opposition to, wind power in the inland rural and forest regions of Sweden. It is in these autonomous communities that the plans are implemented and the aim of the thesis was to, from a local perspective, understand and analyse the planning and acceptance challenges that large-scale wind power development faces in places that are both sparsely populated and have good wind conditions. This thesis is based on qualitative methods and was conducted as two studies. The case study area comprises four municipalities in Dalarna County. The first study analyses the planning and establishment process in three municipalities using interviews and an analysis method called process tracing. The second study analyses one wind power establishment, in which the interviews form the basis for a discourse analytical approach. One striking finding highlights the relationship between the global and the local. Global environment and energy aspects are absent in the local process, and wind power becomes a technical land issue that clashes with other local land interests. Another finding of the study reveals that planning for wind power establishment follows a rational planning tradition. The feelings and memories of the individual – different views regarding the landscape – play a background role in the formal permit process, while measurable observable conditions have a more prominent role. Wind power developers thereby acquire a more significant position than what they probably would have had if the planning had included local residents’ views on wind power in the landscape at an early stage.

  • Jaget, laget, Dotterbolaget : En studie av feministiskt nätverkande och rummets betydelse
  • 2019
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This research explores how entrepreneurship interacts with feministic political commitments and praxis. It shows that this interaction is intimately shaped by its spatial setting, in this case Möllevången in the city of Malmö, Sweden. For a long time, the independent comics industry in Sweden has had men in leading positions and the medium has had masculinist connotations. My thesis shows that for women and transgender persons working in such a male-dominated industry, networking and collaborating are crucial for succeeding and staying in business. The particular network studied here is Dotterbolaget, a women and transgender separatist comic’s network based in Malmö.Dotterbolaget practices a feministic approach. The thesis analyses firstly its work practices and secondly the motives animating their adoption. Avoiding competition and promoting collaboration are important factors. So too is finding a means of motivation other than monetary, such as having fun and creating a professional environment for one another. The analysis also considers the spatial setting of the network, showing the deep significance of physical place. Finally, the non-hierarchal form of the network is considered. What does it mean to work as a comic’s artist without hierarchies in an individualised society? What tensions and strengths does such an organisational form give rise to?

  • There and back again? : Dutch lifestyle migrants moving to rural Sweden in the early 21st century.
  • 2013
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This thesis has a twofold aim. First, it studies motivations and decision processes of Dutch families moving to rural Sweden, with a focus on Hällefors municipality in the Bergslagen area. Second, it explores how this migration flow can be conceptualised within migration theory. The results of the study are presented in four papers. The migrants’ characteristics are explored using variables from the Bergslagen Database. This is complemented with data from interviews with municipality officials, project leaders and Dutch families in rural Sweden. The theoretical framework consists of literature on counterurbanisation, the creative class thesis and lifestyle migration. The creative class thesis has inspired many rural place marketing projects and efforts to attract the ‘right type’ of people to stimulate rural development. Based on the interview study, I argue that lifestyle migration research offers most apt insights into the act of migration within the wider life trajectories of these Dutch families. The thesis offers new empirical data that suggest amendments to be made to the academic definition of lifestyle migration. Additional contributions consider the novel geographic direction of the migration flow (northwards), the destination (a deprived area) and the structure framing the decision process; a local authority and its deliberate attempts to attract new residents from abroad. The findings suggest transcending four binaries. First, in the context of an integrating EU, the thesis adds international dimensions to the initial story of internal counterurbanisation. Second, these flexibly mobile families transcend and combine issues of urbanity and rurality through access- facilitating technology and cheap means of long distance transport. Third, this study reiterates the importance of production as a complement to consumption in lifestyle migration research. Finally, the thesis adds dynamic issues of transience to the static permanent-temporary binary of migration.
