  • Imaging molecular structure through femtosecond photoelectron diffraction on aligned and oriented gas-phase molecules
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Faraday Discussions. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1364-5498. ; 171, s. 57-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper gives an account of our progress towards performing femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron diffraction on gas-phase molecules in a pump-probe setup combining optical lasers and an X-ray free-electron laser. We present results of two experiments aimed at measuring photoelectron angular distributions of laser-aligned 1-ethynyl-4-fluorobenzene (C8H5F) and dissociating, laser-aligned 1,4-dibromobenzene (C6H4Br2) molecules and discuss them in the larger context of photoelectron diffraction on gas-phase molecules. We also show how the strong nanosecond laser pulse used for adiabatically laser-aligning the molecules influences the measured electron and ion spectra and angular distributions, and discuss how this may affect the outcome of future time-resolved photoelectron diffraction experiments.

  • Assessing pain perception using the Painmatcher in patients with whiplash-associated disorders.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of rehabilitation medicine : official journal of the UEMS European Board of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1650-1977 .- 0001-5555. ; 40:3, s. 171-7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the Painmatcher, in terms of reliability, and to explore the relationship between pain magnitude matching and pain threshold assessments in patients with whiplash-associated disorders. Also, to investigate gender differences in pain thresholds and explore the correlation between pain-related cognitions and pain threshold. DESIGN: A test-retest study. SUBJECTS: Forty-seven patients with whiplash-associated disorders. METHOD: A visual analogue scale and a Painmatcher (an instrument for comparing pain magnitude) were used to evaluate pain intensity. Pain threshold was assessed using the Painmatcher. Pain-related cognitions were assessed using the Painometer and the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia. RESULTS: The Painmatcher demonstrated reliable pain magnitude matching scores, but the pain threshold assessment indicated a systematic disagreement. Women exhibited significantly lower pain thresholds than men (p < 0.01). There was a weak but significant correlation between the pain intensity according to the visual analogue scale and the Painmatcher (r = 0.46) (p < 0.01). There was a significant correlation between the emotional experience of pain and pain threshold (r = -0.33) (p < 0.001), but no significant correlation between fear of movement/(re)injury and pain threshold. CONCLUSION: Measuring pain with the Painmatcher is a reliable method, but may include a possible bias in threshold assessments and seems to be associated with unpleasantness.

  • Evaluating the reliability of multi-item scales: a non-parametric approach to the ordered categorical structure of data collected with the Swedish version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia and the Self-Efficacy Scale.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of rehabilitation medicine : official journal of the UEMS European Board of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1650-1977. ; 37:5, s. 330-4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To compare the ability of a rank-invariant non-parametric method with that of kappa statistics to evaluate the reliability of the Swedish version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia and the Self-Efficacy Scale by identifying systematic and random disagreement. The aim was, further, to compare 2 different statistical approaches to obtain a global value from multi-item scales. DESIGN: A test-retest study. SUBJECTS: A total of 46 patients with whiplash-associated disorders were enrolled and 39 (85%) completed the test-retest assessment. METHODS: Data from the multi-item scales were summarized using both sum and median scores. Paired data were evaluated with a rank-invariant statistical method to identify systematic and random disagreement. Data were also evaluated with kappa statistics. RESULTS: The non-parametric approach demonstrated that the Swedish version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia and the Self-Efficacy Scale are reliable for patients with whiplash-associated disorders. In contrast to the rank-invariant method, kappa statistics provided no information on disagreement between the 2 test occasions. Median scoring improved reliability due to lack of disagreement while the sum scores method was characterized by random individual disagreement. CONCLUSION: This study has increased understanding of the advantages and limitations of 2 non-parametric statistical methods and, it is hoped, will contribute to the development of reliable measurements.

  • In-Situ Monitoring of Particle Velocities and Solids Concentration Variations in wet Low-Intensity Magnetic Separators
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: 2015 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium, IUS 2015. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE Communications Society. - 9781479981823
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In previous work, we have shown how an ultrasound pulse-echo setup can be used to simultaneously measure particle velocity profiles and local solids concentration variations in solid/liquid particle suspensions. In this paper, we demonstrate a real-world case where the system is installed in a wet low-intensity magnetic separator, a process in which magnetic material is separated from gangue. The method was evaluated at LKAB's R&D facilities in Malmberget, Sweden, on one of their pilot scale separators. The results show that it is possible to detect changes in the flow velocity patterns and the local solids concentration, as the operational conditions of the separator are varied.

  • Monitoring local solids fraction variations in multiphase flow using pulse-echo ultrasound
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Physics Procedia. - : Elsevier BV. - 1875-3892. ; 70, s. 376-379
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents an ultrasonic pulse-echo technique for on-line monitoring of variations in solids concentrations in particlesuspensions. The method is based on time-frequency analysis of the backscatter signals, exploring variations in spectral content ofthe backscatter as function of depth in the suspension. Experiments on a settling of magnetite particles in water, at varying solidsconcentrations, show that the settling process can be followed by studying the energy of backscattered ultrasound.

  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Human reproduction (Oxford, England). - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0268-1161 .- 1460-2350. ; 21:11, s. 2916-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A pre-ovarian block (POB) technique can be used for pain relief during oocyte retrieval in IVF. The local anaesthetic is deposited in the vaginal wall and between the vaginal wall and the peritoneal surface near the ovary using ultrasound guidance. The aim of this study was to test whether analgesia with POB resulted in improved pain relief compared to paracervical block (PCB).

  • Marker-Trait Associations for Tolerance to Ash Dieback in Common Ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Forests. - : MDPI. - 1999-4907 .- 1999-4907. ; 11:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Common ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) is a tree species of significant ecological and economic importance that has suffered a devastating decline since the 1990s in Europe. Native ash species are being threatened by the alien invasive fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, which causes ash dieback. The main goal of the study was to develop markers for traits related to tolerance to ash dieback and to investigate whether genotypes selected for tolerance were genetically different from susceptible wild populations. We phenotyped 326 ash trees from Sweden for disease severity and genotyped them using 63 amplicon-derived single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers derived from genes in 40 scaffolds spanning 8 MB in total, which represents approximately 1% of the ash genome. We used a mixed linear model to test for an association between genotypic variation at these loci and disease severity of ash. In total, two SNPs were found to have significant associations. One non-synonymous SNP associated with the disease severity of ash was found in a gene predicted to encode a subtilisin-related peptidase S8/S53 domain. A second marginally significant marker was associated with an LRR gene. Our results demonstrate an inexpensive time-effective method for generating genomic data that could have potential for use in future tree breeding programs and provide information for marker-assisted selection. Our study also showed a low differentiation between genotypes selected for disease tolerance and the wild population of ash representing a range of susceptibilities to ash dieback, indicating opportunities for further selection without significantly losing genetic diversity in the ash population.

  • Assessment of health-related quality of life: Swedish version of polycystic ovary syndrome questionnaire.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Acta obstet et Gynecologica. - : Wiley. - 1600-0412 .- 0001-6349. ; 87:12, s. 1329-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective. Polycystic ovary syndrome questionnaire (PCOSQ) was developed in USA to ascertain specific health-related quality of life (HRQL) in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The Swedish version of PCOSQ should be tested prior to its use in research and clinical practice and the aims of the study were as follows: (a) determine the test-retest reliability and (b) confirm the domain structure of the Swedish version of PCOSQ; a 26-item questionnaire, divided into the five domains: emotions, body hair, weight concerns, infertility concerns and menstrual irregularities. Methods. PCOSQ translation from English to Swedish was followed by a test-retest and a factor analysis of obtained PCOSQ completed twice by 69 women with PCOS. Results. The median age was 30 (21-37) years. The Kappa (kappa) statistic for the five domains ranged from 0.29 to 0.69 demonstrating fair to good agreement among items. The Intra-class Correlation Coefficient (ICC) for the five domains was high to excellent ranging from 0.79 to 0.96. The factor analysis presented six domains and the original domain structure was partly confirmed. Conclusions. The Swedish version of PCOSQ is reliable and can be used to measure HRQL in PCOS. Researchers and clinicians should be aware of the benefits of PCOSQ.

  • A novel method for modelling of interactions between pulp, charge and mill structure in tumbling mills
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Minerals Engineering. - : Elsevier BV. - 0892-6875 .- 1872-9444. ; 63, s. 65-72
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modelling the pulp fluid and its interaction with both the charge and the mill structure is an interesting challenge. The interaction is normally modelled with a combination of CFD and DEM, where the DEM particles (grinding balls) create the structure through which the fluid penetrates, and in its turn creates forces on the grinding balls. However, in a tumbling mill, many free surfaces are found and that limits the use of CFD. An alternative computational approach is here necessary. The smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) method has earlier been used to model a ball charge and its interaction with the mill structure. In the present contribution, a SPH description of the pulp fluid is introduced. The lifters and the lining are still modelled with the finite element method (FEM), and the grinding balls with DEM. This combined computational model makes it possible to predict pressure within the pulp fluid. It is also possible to predict how the dampening effect of the pulp liquid is affected by its viscosity and density. The charge induced torque in a laboratory-scale ball mill is used for validation, and the mechanical shock waves travelling in the mill system are described

  • Development of physically based tumbling mill models
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of XXIII International Mineral Processing Congress. - Santiago : IMPC. - 9789569393150
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Numerical modelling of grinding in tumbling mills is traditionally done with the discrete element method (DEM). The grinding balls are then represented by DEM particles and the mill structure is considered rigid. To include more physical phenomena several numerical methods can be combined. One important improvement is to include the mill structure response, using the finite element method (FEM). The interaction between charge and lining can then be studied in detail. The pulp can also be included using a particle-based continuum method e.g. smoothed particle method (SPH). The strength of SPH lies in modelling of free surface flows and very large deformations and it is suited to model simultaneous fluid and granular flow. Still, the coarse particles (grinding balls) in the charge are suitable to be model using DEM. Each of these methods has their strength and weaknesses, but combined they can successfully mimic the main features of the charge movement. With these numerical tools the complex interaction between the different components of the grinding process; pulp, charge, lining and the mechanical behaviour of the mill, can be studied together. This work will present novel numerical approaches to model, simulate and validate charge behaviour in tumbling mills. These numerical models give possibilities to better understand the physical and mechanical behaviour of particulate material systems during grinding in a tumbling mill. This is important in order to develop and optimise future high-capacity grinding circuits and save energy.
