  • Responses of tundra plants to experimental warming : Meta-analysis of the international tundra experiment
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Ecological Monographs. - 0012-9615 .- 1557-7015. ; 69:4, s. 491-511
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The International Tundra Experiment (ITEX) is a collaborative, multisite experiment using a common temperature manipulation to examine variability in species response across climatic and geographic gradients of tundra ecosystems. ITEX was designed specifically to examine variability in arctic and alpine species response to increased temperature. We compiled from one to four years of experimental data from 13 different ITEX sites and used meta-analysis to analyze responses of plant phenology, growth, and reproduction to experimental warming. Results indicate that key phenological events such as leaf bud burst and flowering occurred earlier in warmed plots throughout the study period; however, there was little impact on growth cessation at the end of the season. Quantitative measures of vegetative growth were greatest in warmed plots in the early years of the experiment, whereas reproductive effort and success increased in later years. A shift away from vegetative growth and toward reproductive effort and success in the fourth treatment year suggests a shift from the initial response to a secondary response. The change in vegetative response may be due to depletion of stored plant reserves, whereas the lag in reproductive response may be due to the formation of flower buds one to several seasons prior to flowering. Both vegetative and reproductive responses varied among life-forms; herbaceous forms had stronger and more consistent vegetative growth responses than did woody forms. The greater responsiveness of the herbaceous forms may be attributed to their more flexible morphology and to their relatively greater proportion of stored plant reserves. Finally, warmer, low arctic sites produced the strongest growth responses, but colder sites produced a greater reproductive response. Greater resource investment in vegetative growth may be a conservative strategy in the Low Arctic, where there is more competition for light, nutrients, or water, and there may be little opportunity for successful germination or seedling development. In contrast, in the High Arctic, heavy investment in producing seed under a higher temperature scenario may provide an opportunity for species to colonize patches of unvegetated ground. The observed differential response to warming suggests that the primary forces driving the response vary across climatic zones, functional groups, and through time.

  • Feeding behavior in rats subjected to gastrectomy or gastric bypass surgery.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: European surgical research. Europäische chirurgische Forschung. Recherches chirurgicales européennes. - : S. Karger AG. - 1421-9921. ; 40:3, s. 279-88
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND/AIM: Gastric bypass (GB) is usually designed to restrict food intake and to induce malabsorption. Gastric hormones have been thought to play a role in the regulation of food intake and body weight. The aim of the present study was to analyze feeding behavior after total gastrectomy (Gx) or GB in rats. METHODS: Animals were subjected to Gx, GB, or sham operations. Eating and drinking behaviors after surgeries were assessed by a comprehensive laboratory animal monitoring system. Gastric hormones were measured by radioimmunoassay and energy density in feces by adiabatic bomb calorimeter. RESULTS: Compared with sham operation, both Gx and GB reduced the body weight as measured during 3-8 weeks postoperatively, which was associated with increased energy expenditure per 100 g body weight. Daily accumulated food intake and meal size (during nighttime) were reduced following Gx, but not GB. The water intake (during daytime) was increased after Gx and GB. The energy density in feces was unchanged. Serum concentrations of ghrelin, obestatin, leptin, gastrin, and pancreastatin were greatly reduced after Gx. CONCLUSIONS: Control of food intake and meal size was independent of the food reservoir function of the stomach. Surgical depletion of gastric hormones is associated with reduced meal size, but increased water intake.

  • Atmospheric Chemistry of 2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol: A Theoretical and Experimental Study of the OH-Initiated Degradation under Simulated Atmospheric Conditions
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry A. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1089-5639 .- 1520-5215. ; 125:34, s. 7502-7519
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The OH-initiated degradation of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol [CH3C(NH2)(CH3)CH2OH, AMP] was investigated in a large atmospheric simulation chamber, employing time-resolved online high-resolution proton-transfer reaction-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) and chemical analysis of aerosol online PTR-ToF-MS (CHARON-PTR-ToF-MS) instrumentation, and by theoretical calculations based on M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ quantum chemistry results and master equation modeling of the pivotal reaction steps. The quantum chemistry calculations reproduce the experimental rate coefficient of the AMP + OH reaction, aligning k(T) = 5.2 x 10(-12) x exp (505/T) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) to the experimental value k(exp,300K) = 2.8 x 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). The theoretical calculations predict that the AMP + OH reaction proceeds via hydrogen abstraction from the -CH3 groups (5-10%), -CH2- group, (>70%) and -NH2 group (5-20%), whereas hydrogen abstraction from the -OH group can be disregarded under atmospheric conditions. A detailed mechanism for atmospheric AMP degradation was obtained as part of the theoretical study. The photo-oxidation experiments show 2-amino-2-methylpropanal [CH3C(NH2)(CH3)CHO] as the major gas-phase product and propan-2-imine [(CH3)(2)C=NH], 2-iminopropanol [(CH3)(CH2OH)C=NH], acetamide [CH3C(O)NH2], formaldehyde (CH2O), and nitramine 2-methyl-2-(nitroamino)-1-propanol [AMPNO(2), CH3C(CH3)(NHNO2)-CH2OH] as minor primary products; there is no experimental evidence of nitrosamine formation. The branching in the initial H abstraction by OH radicals was derived in analyses of the temporal gas-phase product profiles to be B-CH3/B-CH2/B-NH2 = 6:70:24. Secondary photo-oxidation products and products resulting from particle and surface processing of the primary gas-phase products were also observed and quantified. All the photo-oxidation experiments were accompanied by extensive particle formation that was initiated by the reaction of AMP with nitric acid and that mainly consisted of this salt. Minor amounts of the gas-phase photo-oxidation products, including AMPNO(2), were detected in the particles by CHARON-PTR-ToF-MS and GCxGC-NCD. Volatility measurements of laboratory-generated AMP nitrate nanoparticles gave Delta H-vap = 80 +/- 16 kJ mol(-1) and an estimated vapor pressure of (1.3 +/- 0.3) x 10(-5) Pa at 298 K. The atmospheric chemistry of AMP is evaluated and a validated chemistry model for implementation in dispersion models is presented.
