  • Basic Concepts of Moving-Sidewall Tuneable Capacitors for RF MEMS Reconfigurable Filters
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 6th European Microwave Integrated Circuits (EuMIC) Conference. - : The European Microwave Association. ; , s. 526-529, s. 1087-1090
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents for the first time MEMS tuneablefilters, where the reconfiguration of the filter is achieved bymoving the sidewalls of a 3D micromachined transmission line. The sidewalls of the transmission line are moved by MEMSelectrostatic actuators completely integrated into the groundlayers of a thick-film coplanar waveguide. Multi-step actuatorshave been utilized for achieving a tuning range of up to 2.41 forthe tuneable capacitance elements. Two different 3Dtransmission line metallization schemes and two differentconcepts for tuning the capacitive load have been investigatedfor constructing filters based on this novel tuning mechanism.Measurements of fabricated devices have revealed that 3Dtransmission lines with top metallization only, and capacitorsavoiding the routing of the RF signal over mechanical-springmeanders achieve the best results. A successfully implementedfilter based on this configuration is shown, with a passbandinsertion and return loss of 5 and 12 dB, respectively, at a centerfrequency of 20 GHz. Various MEMS actuators designs withspring constants from 3.5 to 95 N/m have been implemented, resulting in actuation voltages of 15.4 to 73 V. The self-actuationpower simulated in a non-linear Agilent Advanced DesignSystem model has been estimated to 40 and 50 dBm for the softand the stiff spring actuators, respectively. The fabrication isdone by a single-mask silicon-on-insulator RF MEMS process.

  • Influence of preservation methods on biochemical composition and downstream processing of cultivated Saccharina latissima biomass
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Algal Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 2211-9264. ; 55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Saccharina latissima biomass cultivated along the Swedish west coast was subjected to four different scalable preservation methods after harvest; freezing, sun-drying, oven-drying and ensiling. Freeze-drying and freezing at -80 ?C were also included to provide dry and wet references. The effects of the different preservation methods on the composition of Saccharina biomass (on dry weight, DW, basis), and the recovery as well as properties of high-quality protein, alginate and biogas were evaluated. Sun-drying significantly reduced protein, alginate and fatty acid content of the seaweeds and thereby concentrated ash in the biomass compared to the other methods. Protein/amino acids and fatty acids were significantly concentrated in ensiled biomass, while mannitol and laminarin were reduced compared to the other biomasses. Oven-drying and -20 ?C freezing affected the composition the least, with lower ash content and alterations in some specific amino and fatty acids. Sun-drying and ensiling resulted in significantly lower protein solubility at high pH compared to the other biomasses which translated into the lowest total seaweed protein recovery using the pH-shift process. Highest protein yield was obtained with the freeze-dried reference. Ensiling lead to a significant decrease in the molecular weight of alginate, while sun-drying caused a negative effect on alginate by inducing a shift in the guluronic and mannuronic acids composition of alginate. Sun-drying gave the lowest methane yield in the anaerobic digestion experiments while freezing at -80 ?C gave the highest yield, closely followed by freezing at -20 ?C and ensiling. To conclude, preservation methods must be carefully chosen to protect the valuable component in Saccharina latissima, and to achieve an efficient downstream processing ultimately yielding high quality products as part of a seaweed biorefinery.

  • Tridemethylisovelleral, a potent cytotoxic agent
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0968-0896. ; 13:22, s. 6145-6150
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The synthesis and in vitro cytotoxicity toward various tumor cell lines of (+/-)-tridemethylisovelleral, an analogue of the bioactive fungal sesquiterpene (+)-isovelleral retaining the bicyclo[4,1,0]hept-2-en-1,2-dicarbaidehyde system but lacking the three methyl groups, is reported. The cytotoxicity of tridemethylisovelleral toward several tumor cell lines was found to be comparable with those of established antitumor drugs, and significantly higher than that of isovelleral. • The social cost of methane
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Climatic Change. - 1573-1480 .- 0165-0009. ; 176:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A rapid and sustained reduction of methane emissions has been proposed recently as a key strategy to meet the climate targets of the Paris Agreement. The social cost of methane (SCM), which expresses the climate damage cost associated with an additional metric ton of methane emitted, is a metric that can be used to design policies to reduce the emissions of this gas. Here, we extend the DICE-2016R2 model so that it includes an improved carbon cycle and energy balance model as well as methane emissions, methane abatement cost, and an atmospheric methane cycle explicitly to be able to provide consistent estimations of the SCM. We estimate the SCM to lie in the range 880–8100 USD/tCH4 in 2020, with a base case estimate of 4000 USD/tCH4. We find our base case estimate to be larger than the average SCM presented in other studies mainly due to the revised damage function we use. We also estimate the social cost of carbon (SCC) and find that SCM estimates are less sensitive to variations in the social discount rate than the SCC due to the relatively short lifetime of methane. Changes in the parameterization of the damage function have similar relative impacts on both SCM and SCC. Furthermore, we evaluate the ratio of SCM to SCC as an alternative metric to GWP-100 of CH4 to facilitate tradeoffs between these two gases. We find this ratio to lie in the range 7–33 in 2020, with a base case estimate of 21, based on an extensive sensitivity analysis with respect to the discount rate, damage cost, and underlying emission scenarios. We also show that the global warming potential (GWP) and the SCM to SCC ratio are almost the same if the inverse of the effective discounting (in the social cost calculations) is equal to the time horizon used to evaluate the GWP. For comparison, the most widely used GWP, i.e., with a time horizon of 100 years, equals 27, hence in the upper range of the ratio we find using the SCM to SCC ratio.

  • Perceptions of the seriousness of major public health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic in seven middle-income countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Communications Medicine. - : Springer Nature. - 2730-664X. ; 3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IntroductionPublic perception of the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to six other major public health problems (alcoholism and drug use, HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, lung cancer and respiratory diseases caused by air pollution and smoking, and water-borne diseases like diarrhea) is unclear. We designed a survey to examine this issue using YouGov’s internet panels in seven middle-income countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America in early 2022.MethodsRespondents rank ordered the seriousness of the seven health problems using a repeated best-worst question format. Rank-ordered logit models allow comparisons within and across countries and assessment of covariates.ResultsIn six of the seven countries, respondents perceived other respiratory illnesses to be a more serious problem than COVID-19. Only in Vietnam was COVID-19 ranked above other respiratory illnesses. Alcoholism and drug use was ranked the second most serious problem in the African countries. HIV/AIDS ranked relatively high in all countries. Covariates, particularly a COVID-19 knowledge scale, explained differences within countries; statistics about the pandemic were highly correlated with differences in COVID-19’s perceived seriousness.ConclusionsPeople in the seven middle-income countries perceived COVID-19 to be serious (on par with HIV/AIDS) but not as serious as other respiratory illnesses. In the African countries, respondents perceived alcoholism and drug use as more serious than COVID-19. Our survey-based approach can be used to quickly understand how the threat of a newly emergent disease, like COVID-19, fits into the larger context of public perceptions of the seriousness of health problems.

  • The progress of GHG markets : opportunities and risks
  • 2010
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The climate negotiations at the COP15 in December 2009 did not produce a new international treaty with binding emissions commitments but the Copenhagen Accord for dealing with post-2012 climate change. Given the current climate negotiation process it is unlikely that we will see a global climate agreement soon on a global cap between all Convention members participating in a single carbon market. We may be more likely to see a stepwise process moving towards this scenario, most likely involving linkages between different national policy programs when it comes to mitigation as well as offsetting emissions. In such a process countries will offer commitments based on their domestic abilities, preferences and policies, norms and institutions. National and sub-national policies are thus likely to be the de-facto building blocks of nations' abilities to make and fulfill international commitments. However, also with multilateral mitigation programs without binding commitments, carbon markets will be needed as well as international authorities that support measurement, reporting and verification rules and the international registries. Such markets will necessarily be complicated and temporary in a world without an overarching binding agreement. There will be numerous tradeoffs between different kinds of second-best arrangements. The purpose of this report is to build knowledge about the effects of the development of regional and international carbon markets and the auxiliary technology agreements that might be needed. Among the topics we address are: the evolution and integration of carbon markets, the impacts of policy and technology cost uncertainty on the cost of meeting targets through a carbon market mechanism, the effect of banking, price floors and ceilings, institutional constraints and technological change in the further development of carbon markets and their links to other environmental policy instruments, and the potential of REDD-plus to encourage sustainable forest development and climate mitigation.

  • Galiellalactone is a Direct Inhibitor of STAT3 in Prostate Cancer Cells.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biological Chemistry. - 1083-351X. ; 289:23, s. 15969-15978
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The transcription factor STAT3 is constitutively active in several malignancies including castration-resistant prostate cancer and has been identified as a promising therapeutic target. The fungal metabolite galiellalactone, a STAT3 signaling inhibitor, inhibits the growth, both in vitro and in vivo, of prostate cancer cells expressing active STAT3 and induces apoptosis of prostate cancer stem cell-like cells expressing pSTAT3. However, the molecular mechanism of this STAT3 inhibiting effect by galiellalactone has not been clarified. A biotinylated analogue of galiellalactone (GL-biot) was synthesized to be used for identification of galiellalactone target proteins. By adding streptavidin-sepharose beads to GL-biot treated DU145 cell lysates, STAT3 was isolated and identified as a target protein. Confocal microscopy revealed GL-biot in both the cytoplasm and nucleus of DU145 cells treated with GL-biot, appearing to co-localize with STAT3 in the nucleus. Galiellalactone inhibited STAT3 binding to DNA in DU145 cell lysates without affecting phosphorylation status of STAT3. Mass spectrometry analysis of recombinant STAT3 protein pretreated with galiellalactone revealed three modified cysteines (cys-367, cys-468 and cys-542). We here demonstrate with chemical and molecular pharmacological methods that galiellalactone is a cysteine reactive inhibitor that covalently binds to one or more cysteines in STAT3 and that this leads to inhibition of STAT3 binding to DNA and thus blocks STAT3 signaling without affecting phosphorylation. This further validates galiellalactone as a promising direct STAT3 inhibitor for treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer.
