  • Can you deliver a baby and vote? The effect of the first stages of parenthood on voter turnout
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-7289 .- 1745-7297. ; 29:1, s. 61-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Becoming a parent is a profound change in one’s life that likely has consequences for political mobilization. This paper focuses on the earliest stages of parenthood, which have rarely been theorized nor empirically investigated. Close to childbirth, there may be substantial demobilizing effects due to hospital stays, immediate childcare responsibilities, parenting distress and the physical burden of pregnancy and childbirth. It is unclear how sizeable these effects are on political demobilization as well as the extent to which they are long-lasting. Based on two individual-level register datasets from Denmark and Finland, we compare the voter turnout among parents in local elections across different dates of childbirth. We find a robust negative short-term effect. We also find that the recovery periods after childbirth are differentiated by gender, illustrating a somewhat stronger demobilizing effect of early stages of motherhood compared to the early stages of fatherhood. There are also some indications that recovery periods after childbirth are slower for women with higher socioeconomic backgrounds. Our study shows that childbearing and childbirth have strong demobilizing, although mostly temporary, implications for electoral participation, even in these strong welfare states.

  • Candidate Confidence and Electoral Appeal: An Experimental Study of the Effect of Nonverbal Confidence on Voter Evaluation
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Political Science Research and Methods. - : Cambridge University Press (CUP). - 2049-8470 .- 2049-8489. ; 3:1, s. 43-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nonverbal display of confidence is strongly associated with leadership and power. However, its importance for the persuasiveness of campaign messages has not been explored. How important is showing confidence for a political candidate’s ratings? How does confidence condition the effect of the quality of a candidate’s arguments? This article addresses these questions using an innovative experimental approach that makes it possible to better isolate the impact of the candidate’s nonverbal confidence and the quality of his message. While both of these aspects influence voters’ perceptions of the candidate’s electability and qualifications, the nonverbal dimension matters more when it comes to electability. This research contributes to the study of nonverbal communication in elections by expanding the focus of inquiry beyond the effect of pure emotions (happiness or anger) and facial traits.

  • Gender and electoral communication: How differences in non-verbal and verbal behavior lead to different evaluations of male and female politicians
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 Annual American Political Science Meeting.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presents the results of an experiment in political communication that was designed to maximize what McDermott (2002) terms “experimental realism.” Participants are presented with a believable and engaging stimulus in the form of a candidate webcast. They view one of four different versions of a political speech delivered by a candidate, who is played by a male actor or by a female actor, depending on the treatment. Physiological response technology is used to capture participants’ unconscious reactions to the speech. The objective is to see how both the verbal and non-verbal behavior of male and female candidates influences how they are evaluated.

  • Consumer Strategies in Social Movements
  • 2014. - 1
  • Ingår i: The Oxford Handbook of Social Movements. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780191757938 - 9780199678402
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How and why do more social movements use consumer-oriented strategies to promote their causes? This chapter penetrates these questions by focussing on four consumer practices—boycotts, buycotts, discursive actions, and lifestyle commitments—included in social movement action repertoires and mobilizing campaigns. Illustrations come from the African–American civil rights movement, Nestlé boycott, gay rights’ movement, and the movement against the Israeli occupied territories. The chapter also examines how consumer strategies evolve over time in the examples of the organic food and anti-sweatshop movements. Two recent developments discussed are commercialization (targeting primarily emotions), and “triangle of change” solutions (reflecting partnerships based on the enhanced role of individual choice, looser governmental regulation, and general globalization processes). Consumer strategies are now a standard repertoire of social movements, but they also come with some criticism and limitations.

  • Habits of Sustainable Citizenship : The Example of Political Consumerism
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: The Habits of Consumption. - Helsinki : Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies. - 9789521079894 ; , s. 141-163
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article develops the notion of sustainable citizenship, investigates the kinds of citizenship practices that emerge from and in the market and theorizes how the roles of citizen and consumer are increasingly forged together. It uses survey data to investigate the importance of everyday “ordinary consumption” of common commodities for understanding citizenship and maps the practice and rise of political consumerism, across different age groups in different nations as an inkling of how sustainable citizenship is unfolding in Western society. Sweden is given special emphasis. Important findings are high levels of “buycotting” political consumerism and the fact that political consumers stand out on all identified citizenship expectations but particularly on solidarity citizenship. The concluding section discusses more generally the consumer turn in citizenship and how and why it can be seen as evolving into a more stable or regular practice or habit.
