    • The purpose of this synthesis paper is to present the motivations and conceptual basis for research on socio-technical-ecological systems (STES), addressing the need for interdisciplinary studies targeting the technological mediation of human-environment relationships. The background is the very limited number of collaborations between scholars of social-ecological systems and sociotechnical systems (SES), despite repeated calls for bridging work. The synthesis builds on an in-depth review of previous literature, interdisciplinary exchanges, and empirical examples. The result is arguments for why a sociotechnical understanding of technology' is of central importance for SES studies, related to how technology: (1) mediates human-environment relationships; (2) brings ambivalence to these relationships; (3) enhances and transforms human agency and provides a source of constitutive power; (4) changes scalar relationships, enabling our interaction with and impact on the natural world across time and space. Furthermore, we present an STES analytical approach which starts from symmetrical attention to technology, society, and environment, specifically targeting interfaces and relationships of critical relevance for SES scholars, and address counterarguments that we have encountered. We conclude that a shift to STES research will enhance our knowledge of system interfaces that are often overlooked, opening further avenues for research and real-world interventions.

  • Unintended Effects of Targeting an Environmental Rebate

    • When designing schemes such as conditional cash transfers or payments for ecosystem services, the choice of whom to select and whom to exclude is critical. We incentivize and measure actual contributions to an environmental public good to ascertain whether being excluded from a rebate can affect contributions and, if so, whether the rationale for exclusion influences such effects. Treatments, i.e., three rules that determine who is selected and excluded, are randomly assigned. Two of the rules base exclusion on subjects' initial contributions. The third is based upon location and the rationales are always explained. The rule that targets the rebate to low initial contributors, who have more potential to raise contributions, is the only rule that raised contributions by those selected. Yet by design, that same rule excludes the subjects who contributed the most initially. They respond by reducing their contributions even though their income and prices are unchanged.

  • Effects of different periods of rapid weight loss on dehydration and oxidative stress

    • Background and Study Aim: Many athletes will lose weight 5% or more within 7 days. Many reports have been published on the negative health effects of rapid weight loss (RWL) in wrestlers. This study aim was the effects of different periods of RWL on dehydration state and oxidative stress. Materials and Methods: Participants were nine male collegiate wrestlers who reduce their body mass by 5% within short period in randomized order using the same methods. They have experienced 1-day, 3-days and 7-days) weight loss separated by more than 4 weeks. All participants reduced 5% of their body mass in all trials. Following the weight loss, they tried to regain all of their lost weight with an ad libitum diet for 14 h. Body composition and biochemical variables were measured at baseline and immediately after weight loss and weight regain. Results: There were no statistically significant differences in hematocrit, serum sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, osmotic pressure, and antidiuretic hormone. For plasma aldosterone concentrations and plasma d-ROMs concentrations, two-way analysis of variance revealed the main effect of time (p<0.05). RWL (loss of 5% of body weight within 7 days) is surmised to have increased oxidative stress via dehydration and elevated levels of aldosterone. Conclusions: Although different weight loss periods did not yield any changes, RWL of 5% of body weight was suggested to increase oxidative stress. It is necessary to study the influence of weight loss cycling on athlete's disease risk in the future.

  • Phototoxic effects of two common marine fuels on the settlement success of the coral Acropora tenuis

    • Coral reefs are at risk of exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons from shipping spills and uncontrolled discharges during extraction. The toxicity of petroleum hydrocarbons can substantially increase in the presence of ultraviolet radiation (UVR), therefore spills in shallow coral reef environments may be particularly hazardous to reef species. Here we investigated the sensitivity of coral larvae (Acropora tenuis) to dissolved hydrocarbons from heavy fuel oil (HFO) and diesel in the absence and presence of UVR. Larval settlement success decreased with increasing concentrations of dissolved HFO, and co-exposure to UVR doubled the toxicity: 50% effect concentrations (EC50) decreased from 96 (-UVR) to 51 (+UVR) total petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons (TPAH). Toxic thresholds for HFO were similar to concentrations reported during marine spills: EC(10)s of 24 (-UVR) and 15 (+UVR) mu g l(-1). While less toxic, diesel also reduced settlement and exhibited phototoxicity: EC(10)s of 122 (+UVR) and 302 (-UVR) mu g l(-1). This study demonstrates that the presence of UVR increases the hazard posed by oil pollution to tropical, shallow-water coral reefs. Further research on the effects of oils in the presence of UVR is needed to improve the environmental relevance of risk assessments and ensure appropriate protection for shallow reef environments against oil pollution.

  • Physiological constraints to climate warming in fish follow principles of plastic floors and concrete ceilings

    • Understanding the resilience of aquatic ectothermic animals to climate warming has been hindered by the absence of experimental systems experiencing warming across relevant timescales (for example, decades). Here, we examine European perch (Perca fluviatilis, L.) from the Biotest enclosure, a unique coastal ecosystem that maintains natural thermal fluctuations but has been warmed by 5-10 degrees C by a nuclear power plant for over three decades. We show that Biotest perch grow faster and display thermally compensated resting cardiorespiratory functions compared with reference perch living at natural temperatures in adjacent waters. However, maximum cardiorespiratory capacities and heat tolerance limits exhibit limited or no thermal compensation when compared with acutely heated reference perch. We propose that while basal energy requirements and resting cardiorespiratory functions (floors) are thermally plastic, maximum capacities and upper critical heat limits (ceilings) are much less flexible and thus will limit the adaptive capacity of fishes in a warming climate.
