  • Visualizing Authority Patterns over Space and Time
  • 2020

    • Unidimensional measures of democracy fail to account for the complex and varied nature of political systems. This article disaggregates the concept of democracy and proposes a multidimensional conceptualization to account for this variation in institutional congurations. Three theoretically informed dimensions are featured: participation, electoral contestation, and constraints on the executive. The three dimensions constitute a cube covering all regime types, in which we place countries using V-Dem data from 1789 to 2018. The cube of democracy patterns reveals several interesting observations. We trace historical patterns of democratization and autocratization, and discuss how global and regional developments take dierent paths at dierent times. Our conceptualization makes it clear that political systems with a similar score along a unidimensional scale can in fact be quite distinct. In addition, across the globe over 200 years, certain congurations of political institutions never occur. In other words, incompatible institutional pairs do not exist or are extremely short lived. This multidimensional conceptualization ultimately opens up a new eld of research in which institutional change can be studied in greater detail across countries and over time.

  • Introducing the ETH/PRIO Civil Conflict Ceasefire Dataset
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Conflict Resolution. - : Sage Publications. - 0022-0027 .- 1552-8766. ; 67:7-8, s. 1430-1451
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article introduces the Civil Conflict CeaseFire (CF) dataset. The CF data covers all ceasefires in civil conflict between 1989 and 2020, including multilateral, bilateral and unilateral arrangements, ranging from verbal arrangements to detailed written agreements. In total, the CF data includes 2202 ceasefires across 66 countries and 109 civil conflicts. The data feature information on the actors involved in the ceasefire, and the class, purpose, coverage, and end date of the ceasefire. The CF data provide an empirical basis to assess the conditions that give rise to ceasefires, how ceasefires affect the dynamics of conflict, and the role of a ceasefire in the peace process. This article presents the rationale underlying the data collection, the coding rules and procedures, and how this data can be used for analysis.

  • Long-standing increased bone turnover at the fixation points after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction : A positron emission tomography (PET) study of 8 patients
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Acta Orthopaedica. - : Medical Journals Sweden AB. - 1745-3674 .- 1745-3682. ; 77:6, s. 921-925
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: A secure incorporation of the graft in a bone tunnel is a prerequisite for successful anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. In this cross-sectional pilot study, we studied the healing process with positron emission tomography (PET) scanning. Patients and methods: 8 young patients underwent an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with a bonepatellar tendon-bone graft (BTB, n = 4) or a quadruple semitendinosus and gracilis graft (ST/G, n = 4). Regional bone turnover was quantified with an 18F-fluoride PET scan in each patient 1 day, 3 weeks, 7 months, or 22 months after surgery. Results: The highest activity level was found 3 weeks after surgery, but the activity at the femoral fixation points was markedly increased even after 7 months. The bone turnover was almost normalized 22 months after the operation. Interpretation: It would take at least 7 months until an anterior cruciate ligament graft, fixed with an interference screw, is completely incorporated. This finding is important for postoperative rehabilitation. Furthermore, PET is a feasible tool when studying new ways of fixing soft tissue to bone.

  • Characterization of a double-sided silicon strip detector autoradiography system.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Medical Physics. - : Wiley. - 0094-2405. ; 42:2, s. 575-584
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The most commonly used technology currently used for autoradiography is storage phosphor screens, which has many benefits such as a large field of view but lacks particle-counting detection of the time and energy of each detected radionuclide decay. A number of alternative designs, using either solid state or scintillator detectors, have been developed to address these issues. The aim of this study is to characterize the imaging performance of one such instrument, a double-sided silicon strip detector (DSSD) system for digital autoradiography. A novel aspect of this work is that the instrument, in contrast to previous prototype systems using the same detector type, provides the ability for user accessible imaging with higher throughput. Studies were performed to compare its spatial resolution to that of storage phosphor screens and test the implementation of multiradionuclide ex vivo imaging in a mouse preclinical animal study.
