Governance strategy and costs : board compensation in Sweden

- Shareholders are not identical, but differ in their objectives and actions. One difference is the level of delegation of the principal functions to the board, which we suggest can be observed through the level of directors’ compensation. We analyze the difference in board compensation through the concept of governance strategy and suggest two distinct categories of shareholder strategies: the company governance strategy and the financial governance strategy. These strategies create different distributions of governance costs, which we separate into principal costs and agency costs. We claim that the financial governance strategy adopts a higher level of delegation, which implies that the principal costs are assumed by the corporation and that agency costs are higher. This in turn can explain the higher compensation for the directors of the board compared to compensation under the company governance strategy. We test our hypothesis using a three-year panel of Swedish listed corporations and find that shareholders pursuing a financial governance strategy are associated with higher levels of board compensation. These findings suggest the existence of differences in governance strategies, reflected in governance costs through board compensation, among different types of shareholders in a corporation.

Water current measurements using oceanographic bottom lander LoTUS

- LOTUS is a bottom landing, Long Term Underwater Sensing node made for the observation of ocean water temperatures. LoTUS is moored to the seafloor and measures temperature according to a specified time schedule until, at the end of the mission, it surfaces to transmit the collected data to on-shore recipients using an Iridium link. The paper presents an extension of the sensing capability which includes water current velocity (speed and direction) using a robust, reliable and inexpensive Eulerian method. The method is based on the "tilting stick" principle where a combination of inertial and magnetic measurement data are used. The paper discusses the principal technique, modeling of the system, practical considerations, optimization of the setup for specific flow conditions, and the verification of experimental data.

- Den legitimerade tandhygienisten har en nyckelroll inom promotion och prevention i svensk tandvård. I arbetet som tandhygienist krävs att kunna arbeta självständigt och ta väl underbyggda beslut för att ge en god och säker vård. Syftet med projektet var att utveckla, pröva och utvärdera en modell för klinisk slutexamination utifrån de krav som ställs för att arbeta som legitimerad tandhygienist. Projektarbetet resulterade i en modell bestående av en teoretisk och en klinisk examination. Den teoretiska examinationen består av ett fiktivt patientfall medan den kliniska examinationen omfattar en realistisk patientsituation där studenten omhändertar och behandlar en patient. Den framtagna modellens styrka är att samtliga studenter vid de olika lärosätena examineras kliniskt efter samma bedömningsgrunder vilket borgar för en god och jämförbar kvalitet.

- In the Skagerrak-Kattegat (eastern North Sea), the alien benthic foraminifer Nonionella sp. T1 (previously referred to as “Nonionella stella”) was reported for the first time in 2011 and 2012 in the Swedish and southern Norwegian fjords, respectively. Based on dated sediment cores its first occurrence can be traced back to the 1980s in the Gullmar Fjord, to the 2000s in the Öresund and to 2010 in the Oslofjord. Since then, Nonionella sp T1 has spread all over the Kattegat and coastal Skagerrak, according to sampling campaigns performed between 2016 and 2022. The species is now highly abundant in the entire Kattegat, including the Öresund, as well as in fjord mouths of the seasonally hypoxic Gullmar Fjord, the oxic Hakefjord and the long-term polluted Idefjord as demonstrated by molecular and morphospecies data. At the same time, Nonionella sp T1 is rare to absent in the Baltic Sea, Skagerrak deep basin and in deep fjords of western and northern Norway. This study shows some preliminary results on the species’ present distribution in the study area and raises questions about the driving factors and potential effects on the local biodiversity.

Bacterial protein domains with a novel Ig-like fold target human CEACAM receptors

- Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as group B Streptococcus (GBS), is the major cause of neonatal sepsis in humans. A critical step to infection is adhesion of bacteria to epithelial surfaces. GBS adhesins have been identified to bind extracellular matrix components and cellular receptors. However, several putative adhesins have no host binding partner characterised. We report here that surface-expressed β protein of GBS binds to human CEACAM1 and CEACAM5 receptors. A crystal structure of the complex showed that an IgSF domain in β represents a novel Ig-fold subtype called IgI3, in which unique features allow binding to CEACAM1. Bioinformatic assessment revealed that this newly identified IgI3 fold is not exclusively present in GBS but is predicted to be present in adhesins from other clinically important human pathogens. In agreement with this prediction, we found that CEACAM1 binds to an IgI3 domain found in an adhesin from a different streptococcal species. Overall, our results indicate that the IgI3 fold could provide a broadly applied mechanism for bacteria to target CEACAMs.
