- Simulation-based guidelines were developed for designing tube-mounted gas sensors in the exhaust pipes of diesel and petrol engines, taking into account thermal constraints and gas flow conditions. Different block and tube mounting alternatives for SiC-based gas sensors were studied by means of temperature measurements and simulation of steady state heat transfer and gas flow. Design variables included the number of fins in the heat sink mounted on the inlet tube, the inlet construction, the mounting tube orientation, and the micro-heater substrate placement inside the mounting tube. The most preferable tube mounting design was determined with respect to the thermal performance of the sensor structure and with respect to the gas flow parameters, which are important for the sensor's selectivity, sensitivity and response time.

Web Applications for Large-Scale Decision Support : Preference Elicitation, Modeling and Visualization

- This thesis addresses the lack of effective and efficient technology design in current e-participation research by investigating two approaches that yet have not been explored to any great extent in the literature: decision science and data visualization. It is concerned with the problem of how to combine techniques from these two fields to achieve decision support in the context of e-participation; from preference elicitation and modeling to data analysis, visualization and final recommendations, such that it can provide value to practitioners. The work was carried out in two separate research projects, but which shared a common research strategy: to develop, demonstrate, and evaluate e-participation technologies in real-life settings. The first project was a pilot designed to provide European universities with a web-based e-participation platform to empower students in the Bologna Process. Thirteen universities in Europe participated as end-users of the platform. Using a mixed methods research design, the results showed that ICT is poorly conceptualized in e-participation research and practice, typically conceived informally and simply as tools, independent of the political and social context within which they are developed and used. With regard to sociotechnical challenges in e-participation, the results confirm much of previous research that has underlined the prevalence of technological determinism, institutional resistance, privacy and trust issues, among many other factors. In the second project we developed a decision analytic framework for structuring, evaluating, and analyzing stakeholder conflicts in land-use planning. The Municipality of Upplands Väsby in Stockholm, Sweden, participated as a trial. Using agile design principles and methods we implemented the framework as a prototype spatial decision support system using the R programming language. Our prototype shows that a combination of decision science and data visualization has the potential to become a powerful tool in the hands of governments to enable members of society to identify where their differences really matter and where they are unimportant, thus providing structure and new insight to democratic debate. Furthermore, we believe it has the potential to alleviate some of the barriers and limitations associated with traditional methods of community engagement, including distance and time constraints, issues of scale, and high costs.

Mötet mellan process och komponent : mot ett ramverk för en verksamhetsnära kravspecifikation vid anskaffning av komponentbaserade informationssystem

- Denna avhandling är en kvalitativ studie av hur organisationer kan förenkla och förbättra arbetet med kravspecificering vid anskaffning av komponentbaserade informationssystem. Avhandlingens utgångspunkt är att mer verksamhetsnära och användbara informationssystem kan anskaffas genom att använda en integrerad verksamhetsmodell där verksamhetsanalys och kravspecificering slås samman. Fyra kunskapsområden har studerats och analyserats för att generera ett ramverk som riktar uppmärksamhet mot relevant innehåll och utformning av en integrerad verksamhetsmodell, 1) verksamhetsprocesser 2) verksamhetsmodellering 3) mjukvarukomponenter och 4) specificering. Avhandlingens empiri representeras av en rekonstruktion av den komponent- och processorienterade anskaffning av ett komplett vårdinformationssystem som genomförts i Landstinget i Värmland. Analyser och respektive kunskapsområde har skett utifrån ansatsen Multi-Grounded Theory vilket innebär en reorigenerering utifrån en växelverkan mellan existerande teorier och empirisk grundning. Några exempel på kunskapsbidrag är ett vidareutvecklat processbegrepp samt en ny livscykelmodell för komponentbaserade informationssystem. Utifrån kunskapsbidragen inom respektive kunskapsområde har integrationssynpunkter identifierats som legat till grund för utveckling av ramverket för en verksamhetsnära kravspecifikation. I avhandlingen dras slutsatsen att genom att integrera arbetet med verksamhetsanalys och kravspecificering skapas bättre förutsättningar för att kravspecifikationer speglar de behov systemen är avsedda att uppfylla och att gapet mellan krav och lösning minskar genom ett bättre underlag för kommunikation mellan kund och systemleverantör. Ramverket pekar på att en verksamhetsnära kravspecifikation utformas i en integrerad processmodell som beskriver verksamhetsprocesser utifrån identifierade generiska processbegrepp samt ett scenario för användning och klassificering av funktionalitet. Kravspecifikationen bör, enligt ramverket, även innehålla en systemöversikt, kommersiella och leverantörsrelaterade krav, design- och arkitektoniska krav samt utförandekrav. Ramverket har prövats och vidareutvecklats utifrån en extern validering i form av en utvärderingsworkshop där ramverkets relevans och användbarhet diskuterats utifrån de erfarenheter och den dokumentation som genererats i Landstinget i Värmland.

The value of b required to avoid T2 shine-through from old lucunar infarcts in diffusion-weighted imaging

- Multiple small infarcts of different ages are common in small-vessel disease. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a powerful method for discriminating new from chronic lesions. This can be done on the diffusion-weighted images provided that b is sufficiently high. Our purpose was to determine that critical value of b. We reviewed DWI from a previous study of acute, mainly lacunar strokes, and selected 18 old lacunar infarcts, well defined on uncoded images with b 0 s/m2 (i. e., T2-weighted images) but invisible on DWI with b 1,200 x 10(6) s/m2. We used a 1.5 tesla imager and single-shot echo-planar technique. We had seven separate acquisitions with echo time 123 ms and b in steps between 0 and 1,200 x 10(6) s/m2. Two neuroradiologists blinded to the selection of lesions carried out two different lesion-detection procedures, thereby testing each lesion four times, giving a total of 72 tests of b values. The results were consistent, indicating a level for detection of 800 x 10(6) s/m2 in two tests, 400-600 x 10(6) s/m2 in 65 tests and at lower values in the remainder. For imagers up to 1.5 tesla, at long repetition times and an echo time up to 120 ms T2-shine through of old lacunar infarcts can be avoided using b of 1,000 x 10(6) s/m2.
