  • Transmission loss compensation for Faraday effect fibre optic sensors
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: SENSORS AND ACTUATORS A-PHYSICAL. - : Elsevier. ; , s. 487-490
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a novel scheme for compensation of transmission loss variations in Faraday effect-based fibre optic magnetic field sensors. Light is sent through the sensing element in opposite directions to form the two signal channels needed for the compensation. Experiments have been made with a time-multiplexed multimode system in which IR emitting diodes are alternately used as emitters and detectors. With transmission loss variations of less than 25%, which is reasonable in a real system, the resulting error is well below 1%.

  • A Polarization Based Fibre Optical Sensor System Using a YIG Optical Waveguide for Magnetic Field Sensing
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: Springer Proceedings in Physics, vol 44.. - : Springer-Verlag. - 3540517197 - 0387517197 ; , s. 273-278
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A sensor system utilizing a polarization maintaining fibre for the optical signal transmission and a planar optical waveguide for magnetic field measurements is presented. The system is based on polarization modulation originating from the TE to TM mode conversion in a magneto-optical thin film of Gd,Ga substituted YIG (Yttrium Iron Garnet).

  • A waveguide-based fiber optic magnetic field sensor with directional sensitivity
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, vol. 1511. - Bellingham, WA, United States : Int Soc for Optical Engineering. - 0819406201 ; , s. 142-148
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Design and performance of an extrinsic guided wave fiber optic magnetic field sensor is reported. The sensor utilizes a substituted YIG (yttrium iron garnet, Y3Fe5O12) thin film as the waveguiding sensing element. A polarization maintaining fiber downlead was used to provide insensitivity to both power and loss fluctuations. The design makes it possible to determine both the magnitude and the sign of the magnetic field. Measurement results indicate a usable measurement range of at least several mT with a noise equivalent magnetic field level of less than 8 nT/√Hz

  • Characterization of Magneto-optical Thin Films for Sensor Use
  • 1989
  • Ingår i: SPIE Proceedings Electro-Optic and Magneto-Optic Materials and Applications, vol. 1126. - 9780819401625 ; , s. 77-84
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a part of a fibre optical sensor development project we have made an evaluation of different optical waveguiding techniques to study the properties of thin magnetooptical films. Because of the application the methods are focused on the determination of the Faraday rotation, the linear birefringence and the dynamics and anisotropy of the magnetic properties of the samples. Measurements using holographic grating, prism and edge (end-fire) light coupling to different substituted YIG films are presented. The advantages of the different methods are discussed and it is shown that the launching technique may affect the properties to be measured. Film stress caused by the prism coupling method is found to influence the magnetic anisotropy.

    • The design and performance of a multimode fiber optic magnetic field sensor utilizing the Faraday effect in an epitaxially grown thick (YbThBi)IG film is reported. The sensor is found to be linear over a range of more than lOO dB.

  • Interprofessional ethics rounds concerning dialysis patients : staff's ethical reflections before and after rounds
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Medical Ethics. - London : BMJ Publ. Group. - 0306-6800 .- 1473-4257. ; 34:5, s. 407-413
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether ethics rounds stimulated ethical reflection. METHODS: Philosopher-ethicist-led interprofessional team ethics rounds concerning dialysis patient care problems were applied at three Swedish hospitals. The philosophers were instructed to stimulate ethical reflection and promote mutual understanding between professions but not to offer solutions. Questionnaires directly before and after rounds were answered by 194 respondents. The analyses were primarily content analysis with Boyd's framework but were also statistical in nature. FINDINGS: Seventy-six per cent of the respondents reported a moderate to high rating regarding new insights on ethical problem identification, but the ethics rounds did not seem to stimulate the ethical reflection that the respondents had expected (p < 0.001). Dominant new insights did not seem to fit into traditional normative ethics but were instead interpreted as hermeneutic ethics. This was illustrated in the extended perspective on the patient and increased awareness of relations to other professions. Regarding insights into how to solve ethical problems, the request for further interprofessional dialogue dominated both before and after rounds. CONCLUSION: The findings show the need for interprofessional reflective ethical practice but a balance between ethical reflection and problem solving is suggested if known patients are discussed. Further research is needed to explore the most effective leadership for reflective ethical practice.
