  • Rituals of World Politics: On (Visual) Practices Disordering Things
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Critical Studies on Security. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2162-4909 .- 2162-4887. ; 8:3, s. 240-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rituals are customarily muted into predictable routines aimed to stabilise social orders and limit conflict. As a result, their magic lure recedes into the background, and the unexpected and disruptive elements are downplayed. Our collaborative contribution counters this move by foregrounding rituals of world politics as social practices with notable disordering effects. We engage a series of ‘world pictures’ to show the worlding and disruptive work enacted in rituals designed to sustain the sovereign exercise of violence and war, here colonial treatymaking, state commemoration, military/service dog training, cyber-security podcasts, algorithmically generated maps, the visit of Prince Harry to a joint NATO exercise and border ceremonies in India, respectively. We do so highlighting rituals’ immanent potential for disruption of existing orders, the fissures, failures and unforeseen repercussions. Reappraising the disordering role of ritual practices sheds light on the place of rituals in rearticulating the boundaries of the political. Rituals can generate dissensus and re-divisions of the sensible rather than only impose a consensus by policing the boundaries of the political, as Rancière might phrase it. Our images are essential to the account. They help disinterring the fundamentals and ambiguities of the current worldings of security, capturing the affective atmosphere of rituals.

  • A recent Dreissena invasion in an old canal system in northern Europe
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Göta Canal was opened in 1832 and connects the Baltic and the Atlantic Sea via the large lakes Vänern and Vättern in south Sweden. Originally used for commercial transport, the canal is today one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sweden with canal cruises, pleasure boating and canoeing. Inventories in 2013 showed that Dreissena mussels recently have invaded lakes, streams and canals in the Motala River drainage basin, i.e. the eastern part of the Göta Canal. According to interviews with local people the mussels may have been there since 2012. During the late summer in 2013 and in 2014 we monitored mussels by scuba diving and we sampled planktonic larval populations in locks and the canal. Dreissena has not dispersed to the western part of the canal system, i.e. west of lake Vättern, where most lakes are oligotrophic with low Ca- andMg-levels. In the eastern part, where several lakes are eutrophic and Ca- and Mg-levels higher, populations have increased very fast. The inventories showed local densities of 10 000 adults m-2 in some eutrophic lakes and larval densities of up to 70 individuals L-1 in the canal water. In Europe, the large range expansion of Dreissena occurred during the late 19th and early 20th century. Why have they dispersed so late into the Göta Canal, i.e. some 170 years after the canal was constructed and some 80 years after they had dispersed to other lakes in Swedennorth of Göta Canal? We can not dismiss dispersal as a a limiting factor but given the historically sustained boat traffic in the region it seems likely that ecological factors may have been important. Freshwaters in Scandinavia are usually low in Ca and Mg and many lakes are characterized by oligotrophic conditions poor in food for filter-feeding Dreissena. In the Göta Canal, changes in biological factors affecting relationships between Dreissena and the regional biota needs to be studied, however. Although we can not explain the delayed invasion we conclude that Dreissena is now established in one of the largest canal system in northern Europe.

  • Everyday international relations: Editors’ introduction
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Cooperation and Conflict. - : SAGE Publications. - 0010-8367 .- 1460-3691. ; 54:2, s. 123-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The connection between the everyday and the international has received growing attention in the field of international relations (IR) in recent years. To rethink the international in terms of the everyday, the mundane and the ordinary has brought attention to neglected spaces of the international and turned the everyday into a site of IR analysis. As many of the contributors to this special issue of Cooperation and Conflict note, the everyday has until now not been satisfactorily theorised in relation to IR. It seems clear, however, that to pay attention to the everyday is an attempt to decentralise notions of the international. By drawing on critical approaches to IR, the articles in this special issue unpack the notion of everyday IR and thus provide new and broadened understandings of what IR denote, and how we can make sense of the everyday as a generative site for these relations.
