    • Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA's H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the CMB by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34 and 448 GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy's foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5 K for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun-Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for 3 years. An international collaboration between Japan, the USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. In May 2019, the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, JAXA, selected LiteBIRD as the strategic large mission No. 2.

  • Clinical criteria for a limbic-predominant amnestic neurodegenerative syndrome

    • Predominant limbic degeneration has been associated with various underlying aetiologies and an older age, predominant impairment of episodic memory and slow clinical progression. However, the neurological syndrome associated with predominant limbic degeneration is not defined. This endeavour is critical to distinguish such a syndrome from those originating from neocortical degeneration, which may differ in underlying aetiology, disease course and therapeutic needs. We propose a set of clinical criteria for a limbic-predominant amnestic neurodegenerative syndrome that is highly associated with limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy but also other pathologic entities. The criteria incorporate core, standard and advanced features, including older age at evaluation, mild clinical syndrome, disproportionate hippocampal atrophy, impaired semantic memory, limbic hypometabolism, absence of neocortical degeneration and low likelihood of neocortical tau, with degrees of certainty (highest, high, moderate and low). We operationalized this set of criteria using clinical, imaging and biomarker data to validate its associations with clinical and pathologic outcomes. We screened autopsied patients from Mayo Clinic and Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative cohorts and applied the criteria to those with an antemortem predominant amnestic syndrome (Mayo, n = 165; Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, n = 53) and who had Alzheimer's disease neuropathological change, limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy or both pathologies at autopsy. These neuropathology-defined groups accounted for 35, 37 and 4% of cases in the Mayo cohort, respectively, and 30, 22 and 9% of cases in the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative cohort, respectively. The criteria effectively categorized these cases, with Alzheimer's disease having the lowest likelihoods, limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy patients having the highest likelihoods and patients with both pathologies having intermediate likelihoods. A logistic regression using the criteria features as predictors of TDP-43 achieved a balanced accuracy of 74.6% in the Mayo cohort, and out-of-sample predictions in an external cohort achieved a balanced accuracy of 73.3%. Patients with high likelihoods had a milder and slower clinical course and more severe temporo-limbic degeneration compared to those with low likelihoods. Stratifying patients with both Alzheimer's disease neuropathological change and limbic-predominant age-related TDP-43 encephalopathy from the Mayo cohort according to their likelihoods revealed that those with higher likelihoods had more temporo-limbic degeneration and a slower rate of decline and those with lower likelihoods had more lateral temporo-parietal degeneration and a faster rate of decline. The implementation of criteria for a limbic-predominant amnestic neurodegenerative syndrome has implications to disambiguate the different aetiologies of progressive amnestic presentations in older age and guide diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and clinical trials. Corriveau-Lecavalier et al. propose clinical criteria for a limbic-predominant amnestic neurodegenerative syndrome, which refers to a neurologic syndrome of a slow and predominant amnestic syndrome localizing to the degeneration of the limbic system. Limbic-predominant amnestic neurodegenerative syndrome is agnostic to molecular pathology, although highly associated with transactive response DNA-binding protein 43.

  • Suitability of haematopoietic cell donors : updated consensus recommendations from the WBMT standing committee on donor issues

    • The contribution of related donors to the globally rising number of allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantations (HSCT) remains increasingly important, particularly because of the growing use of haploidentical HSCT. Compared with the strict recommendations on the suitability for unrelated donors, criteria for related donors allow for more discretion and vary between centres. In 2015, the donor outcome committee of the Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT) proposed consensus recommendations of suitability criteria for paediatric and adult related donors. This Review provides updates and additions to these recommendations from a panel of experts with global representation, including the WBMT, the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation donor outcome committee, the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research donor health and safety committee, the US National Marrow Donor Program, and the World Marrow Donor Association, after review of the current literature and guidelines. Sections on the suitability of related donors who would not qualify as unrelated donors have been updated. Sections on communicable diseases, clonal haematopoiesis of indeterminate potential, paediatric aspects including psychological issues, and reporting on serious adverse events have been added. The intention of this Review is to support decision making, with the goal of minimising the medical risk to the donor and protecting the recipient from transmissible diseases.

  • Effects of high temperature processes on physical properties of silica sand

    • High temperature processes may alter soil properties, creating potential risks of subsidence, erosion and other hazards. Soils may be exposed to high temperatures during some aggressive contaminant remediation processes as well as natural events such as fires. Characterising the effects of high temperatures on soil properties is essential to understanding the potential hazards that may arise after exposure. Thermal treatment and smouldering remediation were carried out on silica sand used here as a simple soil. Changes observed in physical properties were associated with the treatment type and exposure temperature. Particle, minimum and maximum densities were independent of heat treatment type and temperature. In contrast, particle size distribution, mineralogy, capillary rise, and hydraulic conductivity were linked to treatment type and exposure temperature with the most substantial changes associated with smouldering remediation. Changes in colour and mass loss with increasing temperature suggest changes within the crystal structure of the silica sand beyond loss of moisture content within the pore space and dehydration of iron deposits from goethite to hematite. Based on these observations, exposure to high temperature processes and the complex geo-chemical reactions during smouldering remediation can have significant effects on soil properties. Monitoring after exposure is advisable to determine the severity of exposure and any mitigation measures that may be necessary.
