  • Cobalt resources in Europe and the potential for new discoveries
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Ore Geology Reviews. - : Elsevier. - 0169-1368 .- 1872-7360. ; 130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Global demand for cobalt is increasing rapidly as we transition to a low-carbon economy. In order to ensure secure and sustainable supplies of this critical metal there is considerable interest in Europe in understanding the availability of cobalt from indigenous resources. This study reviews information on cobalt resources in Europe and evaluates the potential for additional discoveries. Based on published information and a survey of national mineral resource agencies, 509 cobalt-bearing deposits and occurrences have been identified in 25 countries in Europe. Harmonised cobalt resources, classified using the United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), have been estimated for 151 deposits in 12 countries where data are available. The calculated total resource comprises 1 342 649 tonnes of contained cobalt metal. This includes: 114 638 tonnes in commercial projects with current cobalt extraction; 370 409 tonnes in potentially commercial projects; 111 107 tonnes in historic estimates compliant with modern reporting; and 746 495 tonnes in non-compliant historic estimates. Analysis of these data reveals that cobalt resources are widely distributed across Europe in deposits of several different types. Global mine production of cobalt is dominated by stratiform sediment-hosted copper deposits, magmatic nickel-copper deposits and nickel laterite deposits, but other deposit types may also be significantly enriched in cobalt. In Europe, current cobalt production is derived from three mines in Finland: the magmatic sulfide deposit at Kevitsa; the Kylylahti deposit of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) affinity; and the black shale-hosted deposit at Sotkamo (Talvivaara). This study has identified 104 deposits in Europe that are currently being explored for cobalt, of which 79 are located in Finland, Norway and Sweden. The Fennoscandian Shield and the Caledonian Belt in these countries are high priority exploration terrains for a variety of cobalt-bearing deposits, notably magmatic Ni-Cu-Co deposits. The Svecofennian, Sveconorwegian and the Caledonian orogenies in Fennoscandia also resulted in the formation of several other cobalt-enriched deposit types. These include chiefly metasedimentand metavolcanichosted Co-Cu-Au, VMS, skarn and polymetallic vein deposits. The Kupferschiefer deposits in Poland and Germany are stratiform sediment-hosted Cu deposits with some similarities to the Central African Copperbelt, which is the predominant global producer. However, the cobalt grade in the Kupferschiefer deposits is relatively low (0.005-0.008% Co) and not currently economic to exploit without significant improvement in extraction technology. In the Balkans and Turkey cobalt grades and tonnages are known in 27 nickel laterite deposits, with several containing more than 10 000 tonnes of cobalt metal. Only nickel is currently recovered from these deposits, but new processing technologies such as high-pressure acid leaching could enable cobalt recovery in the future. Small polymetallic cobalt-bearing vein deposits in several European countries have been historic producers of cobalt. Today most are uneconomic, but new technologies and the drive towards locally-sourced raw materials could make them viable future sources of cobalt.

  • High-spin studies of the neutron deficient nuclei In-103, In-105, In-107, and In-109
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics A. - 0375-9474 .- 1873-1554. ; 627:2, s. 239-258
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • High-spin states of the isotopes 103,105,107,109In have been investigated using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic methods. Results from three different experiments are presented. Targets of 54Fe, 50Cr, and 92Mo were bombarded by a 270 and 261 MeV 58Ni beam and by a 95 MeV 19F beam, respectively. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a charged-particle detector array and in the first two experiments also with a 1π neutron detector system. As a result of these experiments the level schemes of 103,105,107,109In were significantly extended. Excited states of these odd-A indium isotopes are discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model and the hole-core coupling scheme. The systematics of excited states of light odd-A indium isotopes is also discussed.

  • Discrete line γ-ray spectroscopy in the (50-60)ℏ spin domain of 161,162Er
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 0556-2813. ; 62:2, s. 243211-243218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Very high spin states (I=50-60ℏ) have been observed in the transitional nuclei 161Er and 162Er using the Euroball γ-ray spectrometer. In 161Er, three bands are observed well above spin 50ℏ. In the positive parity, positive signature (+, + 1/2) band a discontinuity in the regular rotational behavior occurs at 109/2+ and a splitting into two branches occurs at 97/2- in the negative parity, positive signature (-, + 1/2) band. The ( -, - 1/2) band continues in a regular fashion to 115/2-, tentatively (119/2-). In 162Er the positive parity, even spin (+, 0) yrast band is observed to continue smoothly up to 58+ (60+) and the negative parity, even spin (-,0) and odd spin (-,1) bands are extended from 30- to 34- and from 31- to 47- (49-), respectively. The high spin experimental spectra are compared with both a simple model involving the occupation of specific single neutron states in the absence of neutron pair correlations and with more detailed cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations in which both proton and neutron pairing correlations are neglected. The very high spin domain is found to comprise a series of unpaired rotational bands. Unpaired band crossings between bands with different neutron and proton configurations are identified in 161Er. There is no evidence for aligned oblate or terminating states being close to the yrast line in 161,162Er up to spin ≈60ℏ in contrast to the lighter Er isotopes.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Excited states of 65Ge were populated via the 12C + 58Ni (261 MeV) reaction using the NORDBALL detector array equipped with charged-particle and neutron detector systems for reaction channel separation. On the basis of γγ-coincidence relations and angular distribution ratios a significantly extended level scheme was constructed up to E x = 9 MeV and J π = (33/2−). The low-energy states of the nucleus are discussed in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model.

    • Neutron deficient nuclei close to 100Sn have been studied using the NORDBALL Ge-detector array together with ancillary particle detectors. Evaporation residues from the compound nucleus 108Te were identified with charged particle and neutron detectors. In this paper a considerable extension of the level scheme of the nucleus 102Cd is presented. The strongest cascade of the new level scheme reveals an irregular sequence of dipole transitions above Iπ = 10+ extending up to spin 17. A strongly populated rather regular side band consisting of four quadrupole transitions ranging from spin 9 to spin 17 was also discovered. This band was tentatively assigned negative parity. Shell model calculations were performed and a very good agreement with the experimental results was found. The excited states could successfully be interpreted as neutron particle and proton hole excitations with respect to the doubly closed core 50100Sn50.

  • Uncontrolled asthmatics have increased FceRI+ and TGF-β–positive MCTC mast cells and collagen VI in the alveolar parenchyma
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Clinical and Experimental Allergy. - : Wiley. - 0954-7894. ; 48:3, s. 266-277
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Asthma has been associated with increased collagen deposition in both conducting airways and alveolar parenchyma. Mast cells (MCs) are key effector cells in asthma and have the ability to affect collagen synthesis. However, the link between clinical control and changes in bronchial and alveolar MC phenotypes and specific collagens in controlled and uncontrolled asthma remains unknown. Objective: To investigate MC phenotypes in correlation with deposition of specific collagen subtypes in patients with controlled and uncontrolled asthma as well as to healthy controls. Methods: The tissue expression of IgE+, FcεRI+ and TGF-β+ MCs, as well as immunoreactivity of collagen I, III and VI, was assessed using immunohistochemistry on bronchial and transbronchial biopsies from controlled asthmatics (n = 9), uncontrolled asthmatics (n = 16) and healthy controls (n = 8). Results: In the alveolar parenchyma, the total number of MCs, as well as the number of FcεRI+ MCs and pro-fibrotic TGF-β+ MCTC, was significantly increased in uncontrolled asthma compared to both controlled asthma and healthy controls. The proportion of TGF-β+ MCTC correlated positively to an increased immunoreactivity of alveolar collagen VI but not collagen I and III. Collagen VI was increased in the alveolar parenchyma of uncontrolled asthmatics compared to controlled asthmatics. Controlled asthmatics had an increased deposition of alveolar collagen I. In bronchi, the immunoreactivity of collagen I was increased in both controlled and uncontrolled asthmatics while collagen III was increased only in controlled asthmatics. Conclusions: Patients with uncontrolled atopic asthma have an altered pro-fibrotic MCTC phenotype in the alveolar parenchyma that is associated with alveolar collagen VI. The present data thus support distal lung mast cell and matrix changes as histopathological features of asthma that may be of particular clinical relevance in patients who have remaining symptoms despite conventional inhaler therapy.
