  • NIMBY or YIMBY? Municipalities' reaction to disaster waste from the Great East Japan Earthquake
  • 2014
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study investigates the determinants of transfer of waste between the affected areas and other municipalities that resulted from the Great East Japan Earthquake. In particular, we investigate to what extent economic factors, but also social factors such as reciprocity and pro-social concerns, affect municipalities’ decision to accept disaster waste. We find some evidence that economic factors affect the decision, but the main factors that explain the decision are related to concerns about radiation and social concerns about the affected area. Our results suggest that it is primarily social concerns, both about the own municipality but also about the affected municipalities that explain behavior.

  • Why do municipalities accept disaster waste? Evidence from the great east Japan earthquake
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Environmental Economics and Policy Studies. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-847X .- 1867-383X. ; 23:2, s. 275-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Municipalities’ cooperation is critical for successful policy interventions for disaster recovery. Using a spatial econometric model, we investigate what factors affected municipalities’ decision to accept disaster waste following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.We find evidence that economic factors affect the decision, but that concerns about the radiation risk and social preferences regarding the affected area also contribute to municipalities’ willingness to accept waste. Our results suggest that social concerns play an important role in understanding municipalities’ behavior in emergency circumstances.

  • Preventing Peatland Fires in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia: The Role of Economic Incentives and Social Norms
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF FOREST ECONOMICS. - : Now Publishers. - 1104-6899 .- 1618-1530. ; 35:2-3, s. 207-227
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the role of economic incentives and social norms in farmers' fire prevention behaviors using survey and remote sensing data. We focus on Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, where large peatland fires cause environmental and social problems. Our regression results indicate that farmers' prevention behaviors are positively associated with agricultural economic returns and participation in local community mutual assistance activities. On the contrary, economic returns on non-agricultural activities are negatively associated with prevention behavior. In addition, we find no difference in fire prevention activities between villages participating in the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation scheme and non-participating villages. These results suggest that a performance-based incentive is important to improve the effectiveness of policies designed to prevent peatland fires and mitigate the risk of climate change.
