    • Fast wave current drive has been performed in JET plasmas with internal transport barriers, ITBs, and strongly reversed magnetic shear. Although the current drive efficiency of the power absorbed on the electrons is fairly high, only small effects are seen in the central current density. The main reasons are the parasitic absorption of RF power, the strongly inductive nature of the plasma and the interplay between the fast wave driven current and bootstrap current. The direct electron heating in the FWCD experiments is found to be strongly degraded compared to that with the dipole phasing.

  • Observations of toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes in a reversed field pinch plasma

    • High frequency peaks in the spectra of magnetic field signals have been detected at the edge of Extrap-T2R [P. R. Brunsell, H. Bergshker, M. Cecconello, J. R. Drake, R. M. Gravestijn, A. Hedqvist, and J-A. Malmberg, Plasma Phys. Controlled Fusion, 43, 1457 (2001)]. The measured fluctuation is found to be mainly polarized along the toroidal direction, with high toroidal periodicity n and Alfvenic scaling (f proportional to B / root m(i)n(i)). Calculations for, a reversed field pinch plasma predict the existence of an edge resonant, high frequency, high-n number toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmode with the,observed frequency scaling. In addition, gas puffing experiments show that edge density fluctuations are responsible for the rapid. changes of mode frequency. Finally a coupling with the electron drift turbulence is proposed as drive mechanism for the eigenmode.

  • Radiation from an electron beam in a magnetized plasma : Whistler mode wave packets

    • Experimental studies are reported of oscillations and radiation that is spontaneously excited by an electron beam which is shot along a diverging magnetic field into a plasma from a hot cathode. In the present study we focus on oscillations below the electron gyrofrequency, where we find that whistler mode radiation appears in the form of bursts, or wave packets, each with typically 0.1-1 mu s time duration, and which together cover typically a few percent of the full time. Wave packets are found in a broad frequency range of 7-40 MHz, while each individual wave packet is dominated by a single frequency. There is propagation along two routes: at the group velocity resonance cone angle, away from the central channel where the waves are excited, and in a channel along the magnetic field. Features of the whistler mode wave packets that are studied include (1) the statistics of amplitudes, frequencies, and time durations; (2) the propagation and decay of wave packets with different frequencies; (3) the group and phase velocities; and (4) how the wave packet production varies with the energy, and the current density, in the electron beam.
