  • Why do Male and Female CEOs exit? Firm Performance and Board Homophily
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Corporate governance and strategy research investigates the effects of firm performance on the likelihood of CEO turnover, but has failed to considere potential gender differences in CEO turnover and how the board’s gender composition may affect this process. This paper investigates CEO exit among all medium- and large-sized firms in Sweden that are privately owned between 2005 and 2010. Controlling for a wide array of industry-level, firm-level, and individual-level variables, we find that CEOs are more likely to exit from firms that experience negative results or have a declining performance trend. For male CEOs it is the negative result that drives the exit; for female CEOs a negative performance trend increases the likelihood of exit. Consistent with homophily and token theories, the level of gender and age diversity of the board has a negative effect on the exit of female CEOs but is not associated with male CEO exit. It thus appears that female CEOs are less pressured to exit when their firm is experiencing low performance, but more likely to exit when the board is composed predominantly by men or of individuals that are similar in age. We discuss implications for research in strategy, corporate governance, and gender.

  • Why Do Some Multinational Corporations Relocate Their Headquarters Overseas?
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Strategic Management Journal. - : Wiley. - 0143-2095 .- 1097-0266. ; 27:7, s. 681-700
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the decision by a multinational corporation (MNC) to relocate its business unit and/or corporate HQ overseas. We argue that business unit HQs move overseas in response to changes in the internal configuration of their unit's activities and the demands of the product markets in which they operate, whereas corporate HQs move overseas in response to the demands of external stakeholders, in particular global financial markets and shareholders. Using data on 125 business unit HQs and 35 corporate HQs, we test and find support for these arguments. The research highlights important differences between corporate- and business-level strategy, and it suggests ways in which the theory of the MNC needs to be reconsidered.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Business schools in the USA and Europe are enrolling an increasing number of foreign students. This is helping to internationalize classroom learning and extracurricular experiences and foreign students provide valuable income as they commonly pay full tuition, for example in the UK and Australia. In this chapter, we highlight how foreign students, PhD students in particular, need to prepare for the reality of a complex employment situation when they return to their country of origin. Most business scholars in low-income countries cannot rely solely on a university salary for their income. Furthermore, it is a common expectation in low-income countries’ universities that faculty members will be extensively involved in providing public services, such as serving on the board of a state-owned firm. With this chapter, we take this further by addressing business scholars’ involvement in entrepreneurship, and we discuss such involvement in light of the Holistic Conceptual Framework of Edupreneurship.

  • Multiple legitimacy narratives and planned organizational change
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Human Relations. - : SAGE Publications. - 0018-7267 .- 1741-282X. ; 67:11, s. 1321-1345
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores the cultural narratives through which members of organizations define legitimacy during prolonged periods of change. We view legitimacy work as a cultural practice and interpretive process that takes the form of organizational narratives. We show how the shifting configurations of internal power relations shape both the choice and the meaning attached to the varied legitimacy narratives. We investigate the construction of legitimacy through a longitudinal case study based on participant observation of Gamma, a government Research and Development (R&D) organization, during a process of intense change. We provide theoretical insights into the construction and deconstruction of the legitimacy by analyzing the narratives in play during a process of planned change. We claim that legitimation narratives not only evolve in accordance with functional need or, in a sense, that older narratives give room to newer, more updated or relevant narratives, but also that multiple narratives are used by different organization actors alternately and interchangeably as part of internal contestation over legitimation of change.

  • Corporate governance in entrepreneurial firms : a systematic review and research agenda
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 54:1, s. 43-74
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This systematic review covers the extant literature on corporate governance in entrepreneurial firms. Using a sample of 137 research papers published from pre-1990 through June 2018 in 60 journals, we categorize outlets, research methods (quantitative, qualitative, review, and non-empirical), theoretical perspectives, and research questions, highlighting key patterns. We then summarize the concepts under study in the sample literature, and the geographical sources and model specification of quantitative empirical studies. The conclusion highlights the quite fragmented nature of the field and the substantial knowledge gaps, and then proposes an actionable agenda for future research in terms of theories, research questions, research settings, and research designs. In particular, we describe the need to explore how corporate governance mechanisms interact with one another and affect firm outcomes, by applying novel theoretical perspectives and methods that could provide a better understanding of entrepreneurial firms' functioning.

  • Birds of a feather get lost together : new venture team composition and performance
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 39:3, s. 727-743
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the relationship between new venture team composition and new venture persistence and performance over time. We examine the team characteristics of a 5-year panel study of 202 new venture teams and new venture performance. Our study makes two contributions. First, we extend earlier research concerning homophily theories of the prevalence of homogeneous teams. Using structural event analysis we demonstrate that team members’ start-up experience is important in this context. Second, we attempt to reconcile conflicting evidence concerning the influence of team homogeneity on performance by considering the element of time. We hypothesize that higher team homogeneity is positively related to short term outcomes, but is less effective in the longer term. Our results confirm a difference over time. We find that more homogeneous teams are less likely to be higher performing in the long term. However, we find no relationship between team homogeneity and short-term performance outcomes.

  • The role of operational capabilities in enhancing new venture survival : a longitudinal study
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Production and operations management. - : Wiley. - 1059-1478 .- 1937-5956. ; 22:6, s. 1401-1415
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate relationships between operational capabilities and new venture survival. On the basis of operations management and entrepreneurship literature, we develop a contingency framework of operational capabilities especially appropriate at different life phases of a new venture's evolution. We expect that in the first years of a new venture's life, entrepreneurs should emphasize high inventory turnover to preserve working capital, support customer responsiveness, and aid firm adaptability. As new ventures grow, entrepreneurs should emphasize internal working capital generation via larger gross margins to support production ramp-up. Later, new venture entrepreneurs should emphasize employee productivity to buttress sustainable volume production. We analyze a 6-year longitudinal sample of 812 Swedish manufacturing new ventures using a gamma frailty-based Cox regression. The findings show that specific operational capabilities, while always supporting new venture survival, have exceptional influence in specific new venture life phases. The three hypotheses are confirmed, suggesting that higher inventory turnover, gross margin, and employee productivity further increase new venture survival likelihoods, respectively, in the venture's start-up, growth, and stability phases. This suggests a phased-capabilities approach to new venture survival. This study contributes to operations management and entrepreneurship theory and practice, and sets a foundation for future research on operations strategy for new ventures.
