  • Electronic structure dynamics in a low bandgap polymer studied by time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 18:31, s. 21921-9

    • Means to measure the temporal evolution following a photo-excitation in conjugated polymers are a key for the understanding and optimization of their function in applications such as organic solar cells. In this paper we study the electronic structure dynamics by direct pump-probe measurements of the excited electrons in such materials. Specifically, we carried out a time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (TRPES) study of the polymer PCPDTBT by combining an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) high harmonic generation source with a time-of-flight spectrometer. After excitation to either the 1st excited state or to a higher excited state, we follow how the electronic structure develops and relaxes on the electron binding energy scale. Specifically, we follow a less than 50 fs relaxation of the higher exited state and a 10 times slower relaxation of the 1st excited state. We corroborate the results using DFT calculations. Our study demonstrates the power of TRPES for studying photo-excited electron energetics and dynamics of solar cell materials.

  • A setup for element specific magnetization dynamics using the transverse magneto-optic Kerr effect in the energy range of 30-72 eV
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AMER INST PHYSICS. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 88:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present a spectrometer that is designed for element-specific and time-resolved transverse magneto-optic Kerr effect experiments at the high-harmonic generation pump-probe facility High Energy Laser Induced Overtone Source (HELIOS) laboratory. HELIOS delivers photons with energies between 30 eV and 72 eV with an overall time resolution of less than 40 fs. The spectrometer is based on a Rowland-circle geometry and allows for simultaneous measurements of all magnetic transition-metal elements. The setup also features easy sample transfer and alignment, and it combines high photon throughput, optimized data acquisition, and a fast switching of the magnetic field at the sample. The spectrometer performance is demonstrated by measuring the ultrafast demagnetization of permalloy. Our data are, for all practical purposes, identical to what have been reported in the earlier high-order harmonic generation work of a similar sample by Mathias et al. [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 109, 4792-4797 (2012)], however, obtained within 15% of the acquisition time compared to their study. Furthermore, our data show a shift of the demagnetization curve of Ni relative to Fe, which has previously been interpreted as a delay of the Ni demagnetization to that of Fe [S. Mathias et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 109, 4792-4797 (2012)].

  • Atom-specific magnon-driven ultrafast spin dynamics in Fe1-xNix alloys
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 107:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By employing element-specific spectroscopy in the ultrafast time scale in Fe1-xNix alloys, we find a composition-dependent effect in the demagnetization that we relate to electron-magnon scattering and changes in the spin-wave stiffness. In all six measured alloys of different composition, the demagnetization of Ni compared to Fe exhibits a delay, an effect which we find is inherent in alloys but not in elemental Fe and Ni. Using a model based on electron-magnon scattering, we extract a spin-wave stiffness from all alloys that show excellent agreement with values obtained from other techniques.

  • HELIOS-A laboratory based on high-order harmonic generation of extreme ultraviolet photons for time-resolved spectroscopy
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : AIP Publishing. - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 86:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present the HELIOS (High Energy Laser Induced Overtone Source) laboratory, an in-house high-order harmonic generation facility which generates extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photon pulses in the range of 15-70 eV with monochromatized XUV pulse lengths below 35 fs. HELIOS is a source for time-resolved pump-probe/two-color spectroscopy in the sub-50 fs range, which can be operated at 5 kHz or 10 kHz. An optical parametric amplifier is available for pump-probe experiments with wavelengths ranging from 240 nm to 20 000 nm. The produced XUV radiation is monochromatized by a grating in the so-called off-plane mount. Together with overall design parameters, first monochromatized spectra are shown with an intensity of 2 . 10(10) photons/s (at 5 kHz) in the 29th harmonic, after the monochromator. The XUV pulse duration is measured to be <25 fs after monochromatization.

  • Developments and enhancements to the HELIOS pump probe system
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena. - : Elsevier. - 0368-2048 .- 1873-2526. ; 224, s. 33-37
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this progress report we describe several design improvements that have been implemented at the HELIOS laboratory, as well as presenting the output characteristics that have been measured as a result. The main focus will be on the redesign of the gas cell, which has enhanced the photon flux of the XUV probe beam. Also, a frequency trippler utilizing sum frequency generation has been installed at the end of the pump line, which increases the photon flux available for both 3.1 eV (400 nm) and 4.66 eV (266 nm) applications without significant increment in the pulse width of the pump.

  • Constructing and Commissioning HELIOS – A High Harmonic Generation Source for Pump-Probe Measurements with sub 50 fs Temporal Resolution : The Development of Experimental Equipment for Extreme Ultraviolet Spectroscopy
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis presents HELIOS, an in-house laboratory for time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy with extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) probe radiation. A wide span of pump wavelengths can be generated using commercial laser equipment while XUV probe radiation is generated via a high harmonic generation process in a noble gas delivering probe photons with energies between 20 eV and 72 eV. The XUV beam path features a time-preserving monochromator and was constructed and built in-house. HELIOS features an overall time resolution of about 50 fs when using 800 nm pump and 41 eV probe photons. An energy resolution of 110 meV at 41 eV photon energy can be achieved. HELIOS features two beamlines. One µ-focus beamline with an XUV focal size of about 20 µm can be used with experiments that require such a small XUV focal size as well as with different end stations. The other beamline features a semi-permanently mounted end station for angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy under ultra-high vacuum conditions.Experiments demonstrating the usability of HELIOS and the two beamlines are presented. A pump-probe measurement on graphene demonstrates the capability of determining a large part of the k-space in only one measurement due to the use of an ARTOF angle-resolved time-of-flight electron spectrometer. A non-angle-resolved pump-probe measurement on the conducting polymer PCPDTBT demonstrates the high signal-to-noise ratio achievable at this beamline in non-angle-resolved photoelectron-spectroscopy pump-probe measurements. The usability of the µ-focus beamline is demonstrated with time-resolved measurements on magnetic samples employing an in-house-designed spectrometer. These experiments allow the retrieval of element-specific information on the magnetization within a sample employing the transversal magneto-optical Kerr effect (T-MOKE).Additionally, a Fourier transform spectrometer for the XUV is presented, the concept was tested at a synchrotron and it was used to determine the longitudinal coherence of the XUV radiation at HELIOS.
