  • Integration of new biological and physical retrospective dosimetry methods into EU emergency response plans - joint RENEB and EURADOS inter-laboratory comparisons
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Radiation Biology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0955-3002 .- 1362-3095. ; 93:1, s. 99-109
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: RENEB, 'Realising the European Network of Biodosimetry and Physical Retrospective Dosimetry,' is a network for research and emergency response mutual assistance in biodosimetry within the EU. Within this extremely active network, a number of new dosimetry methods have recently been proposed or developed. There is a requirement to test and/or validate these candidate techniques and inter-comparison exercises are a well-established method for such validation. Materials and methods: The authors present details of inter-comparisons of four such new methods: dicentric chromosome analysis including telomere and centromere staining; the gene expression assay carried out in whole blood; Raman spectroscopy on blood lymphocytes, and detection of radiation induced thermoluminescent signals in glass screens taken from mobile phones. Results: In general the results show good agreement between the laboratories and methods within the expected levels of uncertainty, and thus demonstrate that there is a lot of potential for each of the candidate techniques. Conclusions: Further work is required before the new methods can be included within the suite of reliable dosimetry methods for use by RENEB partners and others in routine and emergency response scenarios.

  • Numerical Simulation of Dynamic Tensile Extrusion Test of OFHC Copper
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Dynamic Behavior of Materials. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2199-7446 .- 2199-7454. ; 1, s. 136-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The dynamic tensile extrusion (DTE) test offersunique possibility to probe material response under verylarge plastic strain, high strain rate and temperature tosupport constitutive modelling development. From thecomputational point of view, the DTE test is particularlychallenging and a number of issues need to be assessedbefore proceeding with material modelling verification. Inthis work, an extensive and detailed computational workwas carried out in order to provide the guidelines for accuratesimulation of DTE test. Two constitutive models, the first phenomenological the latter physically-based, wereused to simulated the behavior of fully annealed OFHCcopper in dynamic extrusion at different velocities. Materialmodels parameters were calibrated using uniaxial testdata at different strain rates and temperatures. The number, size and shape of the ejected fragments at different velocitywere used as validation metrics for the selected constitutivemodels. Results indicate that material behavior under dynamicextrusion can be accurately predicted limiting theinfluence of numerical parameters not related to the constitutivemodel under investigation. The physically basedmodelling allows a more accurate prediction of the materialresponse and the possibility to incorporate microstructureevolution processes, such as dynamic recrystallization, which seems to control the response of OFHC copper inDTE tests at higher velocity.

  • Validating material modelling for OFHC copper using Dynamic Tensile Extrusion (DTE) test at different velocity impact
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : Author(s). - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1793, s. 100019-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the Dynamic Tensile Extrusion (DTE) test, the material is subjected to very large strain, high strain rate and elevated temperature. Numerical simulation, validated comparing with measurements obtained on soft-recovered extruded fragments, can be used to probe material response under such extreme conditions and to assess constitutive models. In this work, the results of a parametric investigation on the simulation of DTE test of annealed OFHC copper -at impact velocity ranging from 350 up to 420 m/s -using the modified Rusinek-Klepaczko model, are presented. Simulation of microstructure evolution was performed using the visco-plastic self consistent model (VPSC), providing, as input, the velocity gradient history obtained with FEM at selected locations along the axis of the fragment trapped in the extrusion die. Finally, results are compared with EBSD analysis.

  • High resolution thermal imaging of hotspots in superconducting films
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1558-2515 .- 1051-8223. ; 17:2/3, s. 3215-3218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermal imaging of hotspots in bridge structures of YbaCuO thin films is presented with micrometer resolution. Hotspots formed by passing transport currents are observed using a method based on the temperature dependence in the photoluminescence of a polymer thin film deposited on the superconductor. The hotspots are self maintained and have hysteretic behavior. An external magnetic field changes their behavior. The temperature distribution over the bridge and in its vicinity can be observed with a resolution better than 0.1 K. Also details of the experimental method will be reported.

  • Effect of microstructure on dynamic shear localisation in Alloy 718
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Mechanics of Materials. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-6636. ; 109, s. 88-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of microstructure on the strain localisation behaviour during dynamic shear deformation of Ni-Fe-base superalloy Alloy 718 was investigated by a combination of experiments and numerical simulations of Split-Hopkinson tests of specimens with top-hat geometry. The results show that strain localisation is promoted by small grain size and precipitation hardening, whereas large grains and solution annealing largely supressed the formation of shear bands. In addition, a smaller fillet radius facilitated the initiation of shear bands. Finite element simulations were able to reproduce the most important features of both global load–displacement histories, and presence of shear localisation. In particular, detailed simulations of the local deformation during localisation showed that temperatures exceeding 750?°C (locally above 1000?°C) and strain rates in the order of 2?105 s?1 were reached in the band.

  • RENEB - Running the European Network of biological dosimetry and physical retrospective dosimetry
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Radiation Biology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0955-3002 .- 1362-3095. ; 93:1, s. 2-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: A European network was initiated in 2012 by 23 partners from 16 European countries with the aim to significantly increase individualized dose reconstruction in case of large-scale radiological emergency scenarios. Results: The network was built on three complementary pillars: (1) an operational basis with seven biological and physical dosimetric assays in ready-to-use mode, (2) a basis for education, training and quality assurance, and (3) a basis for further network development regarding new techniques and members. Techniques for individual dose estimation based on biological samples and/or inert personalized devices as mobile phones or smart phones were optimized to support rapid categorization of many potential victims according to the received dose to the blood or personal devices. Communication and cross-border collaboration were also standardized. To assure long-term sustainability of the network, cooperation with national and international emergency preparedness organizations was initiated and links to radiation protection and research platforms have been developed. A legal framework, based on a Memorandum of Understanding, was established and signed by 27 organizations by the end of 2015. Conclusions: RENEB is a European Network of biological and physical-retrospective dosimetry, with the capacity and capability to perform large-scale rapid individualized dose estimation. Specialized to handle large numbers of samples, RENEB is able to contribute to radiological emergency preparedness and wider large-scale research projects.

  • Educational readiness among health professionals in rheumatology: low awareness of EULAR offerings and unfamiliarity with the course content as major barriers-results of a EULAR-funded European survey
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: RMD Open. - : BMJ PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2056-5933. ; 9:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BackgroundOngoing education of health professionals in rheumatology (HPR) is critical for high-quality care. An essential factor is education readiness and a high quality of educational offerings. We explored which factors contributed to education readiness and investigated currently offered postgraduate education, including the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) offerings. Methods and participantsWe developed an online questionnaire, translated it into 24 languages and distributed it in 30 European countries. We used natural language processing and the Latent Dirichlet Allocation to analyse the qualitative experiences of the participants as well as descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression to determine factors influencing postgraduate educational readiness. Reporting followed the Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys guideline.ResultsThe questionnaire was accessed 3589 times, and 667 complete responses from 34 European countries were recorded. The highest educational needs were professional development, prevention and lifestyle intervention. Older age, more working experience in rheumatology and higher education levels were positively associated with higher postgraduate educational readiness. While more than half of the HPR were familiar with EULAR as an association and the respondents reported an increased interest in the content of the educational offerings, the courses and the annual congress were poorly attended due to a lack of awareness, comparatively high costs and language barriers.ConclusionsTo promote the uptake of EULAR educational offerings, attention is needed to increase awareness among national organisations, offer accessible participation costs, and address language barriers.

  • Web based scoring is useful for validation and harmonisation of scoring criteria within RENEB
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Radiation Biology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0955-3002 .- 1362-3095. ; 93:1, s. 110-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: To establish a training data set of digital images and to investigate the scoring criteria and dose assessment of the dicentric assay within the European network of biodosimetry (RENEB), a web based scoring inter-comparison was undertaken by 17 RENEB partners. Materials and methods: Two sets of 50 high resolution images were uploaded onto the RENEB web site. One set included metaphases after a moderate exposure (1.3 Gy) and the other set consisted of metaphases after a high dose exposure (3.5 Gy). The laboratories used their own calibration curves for estimating doses based on observed aberration frequencies. Results: The dose estimations and 95% confidence limits were compared to the actual doses and the corresponding z-values were satisfactory for the majority; only the dose estimations from two laboratories were too low or too high. The coefficients of variation were 17.6% for the moderate and 11.2% for the high dose. Metaphases with controversial results could be identified for training purposes. Conclusions: Overall, the web based scoring of the two galleries by the 17 laboratories produced very good results. Application of web based scoring for the dicentric assay may therefore be a relevant strategy for an operational biodosimetry assistance network.
