    • Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN.

    • A changing view of children, accelerated by the Convention of the Rights of the Child (UN in Convention on the rights of the child, UN Doc. A/RES/44/25, 1989, http://www2.ohchr.org/english/law/pdf/crc.pdf) has shifted the landscape of child and family research over the last few decades. Once viewed with low credibility and operating outside the interpretive framework of adult researchers, the rights-bearing child is increasingly recognized not only as having the capacity but also the right to participate in research. More recently, this movement has transitioned from the direct engagement of children as research participants—now considered commonplace, although less so for those who are structurally vulnerable—to the involvement of children in research design, review, conduct, and dissemination. Yet, both practical and ethical challenges remain. While children have the right to participation, they also have the right to protection. In this commentary, we set out to: (i) lay forth epistemic, child rights, and child sociology arguments for doing research about, with and by children and youth; (ii) recount our own journey of including children and youth in research to demonstrate the unique knowledge and insights gained through these approaches; and (iii) offer lessons learned on how to engage children and youth in research, including the involvement of structurally vulnerable groups.

    • Parmelioid lichens are a diverse and ubiquitous group of foliose lichens. Generic delimitation in parmelioid lichens has been in a state of flux since the late 1960s with the segregation of the large, heterogeneous genus Parmelia into numerous smaller genera. Recent molecular phylogenetic studies have demonstrated that some of these new genera were monophyletic, some were not, and others, previously believed to be unrelated, fell within single monophyletic groups, indicating the need for a revision of the generic delimitations. This study aims to give an overview of current knowledge of the major clades of all parmelioid lichens. For this, we assembled a dataset of 762 specimens, including 31 of 33 currently accepted parmelioid genera (and 63 of 84 accepted genera of Parmeliaceae). We performed maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses of combined datasets including two, three and four loci. Based on these phylogenies and the correlation of morphological and chemical characters that characterize monophyletic groups, we accept 27 genera within nine main clades. We re-circumscribe several genera and reduce Parmelaria to synonymy with Parmotrema. Emodomelanelia Divakar & A. Crespo is described as a new genus (type: E. masonii). Nipponoparmelia (Kurok.) K.H. Moon, Y. Ohmura & Kashiw. ex A. Crespo & al. is elevated to generic rank and 15 new combinations are proposed (in the genera Flavoparmelia, Parmotrema, Myelochroa, Melanelixia and Nipponoparmelia). A short discussion of the accepted genera is provided and remaining challenges and areas requiring additional taxon sampling are identified.

  • Evolution of complex symbiotic relationships in a morphologically derived family of lichen-forming fungi

    • We studied the evolutionary history of the Parmeliaceae (Lecanoromycetes, Ascomycota), one of the largest families of lichen-forming fungi with complex and variable morphologies, also including several lichenicolous fungi. We assembled a six-locus data set including nuclear, mitochondrial and low-copy protein-coding genes from 293 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). The lichenicolous lifestyle originated independently three times in lichenized ancestors within Parmeliaceae, and a new generic name is introduced for one of these fungi. In all cases, the independent origins occurred c. 24 million yr ago. Further, we show that the Paleocene, Eocene and Oligocene were key periods when diversification of major lineages within Parmeliaceae occurred, with subsequent radiations occurring primarily during the Oligocene and Miocene. Our phylogenetic hypothesis supports the independent origin of lichenicolous fungi associated with climatic shifts at the Oligocene-Miocene boundary. Moreover, diversification bursts at different times may be crucial factors driving the diversification of Parmeliaceae. Additionally, our study provides novel insight into evolutionary relationships in this large and diverse family of lichen-forming ascomycetes.

  • Adolescent co-researchers identified the central role of social media for young people during the pandemic

    • AIM: To test the method of engaging co-researcher adolescents in data collection and explore stated motives for their selection of social media material related to COVID-19.METHODS: Twenty-three adolescents, 13-19-years old, in Sweden participated as co-researchers collecting material from their social media related to COVID-19. Specifically, they motivated their selection of social media material in field notes. Their motives were explored using content analysis.RESULTS: Adolescent co-researchers understood and performed the task well, providing insight into the social media exchanges of adolescents during the pandemic. An overarching theme for the motivation for their selection emerged: Social media is an important tool for adolescents' communication and information exchange during COVID-19. Four categories were identified: Keeping track of the talk of the town; Recognition of personally relevant topics; Adolescents as information consumers; Social media as a means for expressing feelings, advice and existential reflections. Co-researchers reported challenges relating to the quality of pandemic-related information available to adolescents.CONCLUSION: Including young people as co-researchers on matters relevant to them was successful. This study also underlines the need to consider the role of social media in information exchange during crises and to co-produce health communication with adolescents to meet their specific needs.

  • Adaptation of the trauma group intervention 'Teaching Recovery Techniques' for online delivery : A participatory design and usability study

    • BACKGROUND: Video-telehealth delivery of trauma-based care is promising and may help address structural and perceptual barriers to receiving support. However, existing evidence relies heavily on samples from adult populations. There is potential to transfer existing child and adolescent trauma interventions to a video-telehealth delivery format; but, this requires careful consideration. The aim of this project was to adapt a group-based intervention called Teaching Recovery Techniques for online delivery and investigate the usability of the new intervention format.METHODS: A qualitative needs assessment was performed (n = 3 intervention leaders, 4 youth), followed by participatory workshops and advisory panel consultation to generate adaptation recommendations. Usability testing was performed in two cycles; the first tested the adapted manual with intervention leaders (n = 5), and the second tested newly developed digital resources with youth (n = 5).RESULTS: The needs assessment uncovered a number of issues that, when generating recommendations, were distilled into three topics: safety, participation and learning. Recommendations included safety rules, an emergency response protocol, communication strategies, and guidance on group composition and intervention delivery. Usability testing indicated acceptability but highlighted the need for more detailed and explicit guidance, particularly on safety processes.DISCUSSION: The present study demonstrates the potential for delivery format to affect intervention feasibility and acceptability, and provides recommendations that can be used to guide the transfer of other group-based mental health interventions to an online format. The young people, parents and professionals involved in the project provided rich and varied perspectives, which illustrated the value of broad stakeholder engagement.

  • Perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic as demonstrated in drawings of Swedish children aged 4-6 years

    • AimTo explore the perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, as expressed in the drawings of Swedish children aged 4–6 years.MethodsWe analysed 91 drawings with associated descriptions submitted to the Swedish Archive of Children's Art from April 2020 to February 2021.ResultsThe visual and text analysis resulted in three themes. First, illustrating the virus and embodying the danger showed that young children understood the invisible enemy, combining realistic elements of the virus particle with fantasies of the ‘virus monster’ that needs to be fought off. Second, life has changed for the worse describes the profound effect the pandemic had on young children's lives also in Sweden, with comparatively mild restrictions and no school closures. Third, the virus spreads across the world, affects people and infects their bodies conveys young children's understanding of the pandemic as an existential challenge affecting the whole world. Children displayed surprisingly high levels of health literacy related to COVID-19, including contagion routes and the importance of hand hygiene.ConclusionThe drawings of Swedish children aged 4–6 years demonstrated the profound, practical and emotional effects of the pandemic on their lives. Drawings also illuminated young children's level of health literacy regarding COVID-19.
