  • Low-cost, high-speed multispectral imager via spatiotemporal modulation based on a color camera
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optica Publishing Group. - 1094-4087. ; 31:25, s. 42613-42623

    • Spectral imaging is a powerful tool in industrial processes, medical imaging, and fundamental scientific research. However, for the commonly used spatial/spectral-scanning spectral imager, the slow response time has posed a big challenge for its employment in dynamic scenes. In this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal modulation concept and build a simple, low-cost spectral imager by combining a liquid crystal (LC) cell with a commercial color camera. By the synergic effect of temporal modulation of the LC materials and spatial modulation of the Bayer filter in a color camera, high-quality multispectral imaging is successfully demonstrated with a high rate of 8 Hz, far beyond the counterparts. Experimental results show that even with three tuning states of the LC material, optical signals with a 10-nm band can be resolved in the range between 410 and 700 nm by this method, overcoming the tradeoff between spectral resolution and time resolution. As a proof of demonstration, we present its potential usage for metamerism recognition, showing superiority over traditional color cameras with more spectral details. Considering its low cost, miniaturization and monolithic-integration ability on color sensors, this simple approach may bring the spectral imaging technology closer to the consumer market and even to ubiquitous smartphones for health care, food inspection and other applications.

  • Association of mitochondrial DNA copy number with chronic kidney disease in older adults
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: BMC Geriatrics. - : BMC. - 1471-2318. ; 23:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Mitochondrial dysfunction in kidney cells has been implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Estimation of mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNA-CN) is considered a convenient method for representing mitochondrial function in large samples. However, no study has investigated the association between mtDNA-CN and CKD in older adults with the highest prevalence. The objective is to examine cross-sectional and prospective associations between mtDNA-CN values and CKD risk in older adults to determine whether mtDNA-CN represents a novel potential biomarker for the recognition of CKD risk. Patients and methods In a Chinese community-based cohort of over 65-year-olds, we included 14,467 participants (52.6% females). CKD was defined by eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m(2) or ICD-10 codes (patients = 3831 (26.5%)). Participants had peripheral blood levels of mtDNA-CN calculated from probe intensities of the Axiom CAS Array. Results The risk of CKD prevalence decreased with mtDNA-CN per 1-SD increment, independent of established risk factors for older CKD (odds ratio [OR] per SD 0.90, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.86, 0.93, P < 0.001), and has comparable strength of association with these established risk factors. Furthermore, the progression of kidney function was stratified according to the worsening of eGFR categories. The risk of kidney function progression to a more severe stage gradually decreased as the mtDNA-CN increased (P trend < 0.001). Non-CKD participants in the highest quartile of mtDNA-CN had a lower risk of developing CKD compared to the lowest quartile within 2 years of follow-up, reducing the risk of CKD by 36% (95% CI 0.42, 0.97; P = 0.037). Conclusions Based on the analysis of the largest sample to date investigating the association between mtDNA-CN and CKD in older adults, higher levels of mtDNA-CN were found to be associated with a lower risk of CKD, suggesting that a reduced level of mtDNA-CN is a potential risk factor for CKD.

  • Wide-field-of-view auto-coupling optical antenna system for high-speed bidirectional optical wireless communications in C band
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Optica Publishing Group. - 1094-4087. ; 31:20, s. 33435-33448
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to a great many superior features of infrared light communication (ILC), like high capacity and strong privacy, ILC is considered a potential candidate for serving the high demands of beyond fifth-generation/sixth-generation (B5G/6 G) communication systems. However, the terminal's limited field-of-view (FOV) induces great difficulty in establishing line-of-sight (LoS) link between the transceiver and the terminal. In this paper, we propose a wide-FOV auto-coupling optical antenna system that utilizes a wide-FOV telecentric lens to collect incident infrared beams and automatically couple them into a specific single-mode-fiber (SMF) channel of fiber array and optical switch. The performance of this optical antenna system is assessed through simulation and manual alignment operation, and validated by automatic alignment results. A coupling loss of less than 10.6 dB within a FOV of 100(degrees )for both downstream and upstream beams in C band is demonstrated by the designed system. Furthermore, we establish a bidirectional optical wireless communications (OWC) system employing this antenna and a fiber-type modulating retro-reflector (MRR) system in the terminal. Both 10-Gbps on-off keying (OOK) downstream and upstream transmissions are successfully realized with the FOV of up to 100(degrees) in C band where the measured bit-error-rate (BER) is lower than 3.8 x 10-3. To the best of our knowledge, this is a brand-new auto-coupling optical antenna system with the largest FOV in ILC automatic alignment works in terminals that have ever been reported.

  • Assessing the magnetic order dependent gamma-surface of Cr-Co-Ni alloys
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science & Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1005-0302. ; 80, s. 66-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to efficiently explore the nearly infinite composition space in multicomponent solid solution alloys for reaching higher mechanical performance, it is important to establish predictive design strategies using computation-aided methods. Here, using ab initio calculations we systematically study the effects of magnetism and chemical composition on the generalized stacking fault energy surface (gamma-surface) of Cr-Co-Ni medium entropy alloys and show that both chemistry and the coupled magnetic state strongly affect the gamma-surface, consequently, the primary deformation modes. The relations among various stable and unstable stacking fault energies are revealed and discussed. The present findings are useful for studying the deformation behaviors of Cr-Co-Ni alloys and facilitate a density functional theory based design of transformation-induced plasticity and twinning-induced plasticity mechanisms in Cr-Co-Ni alloys.

  • Theoretical and experimental study of phase transformation and twinning behavior in metastable high-entropy alloys
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Science & Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 1005-0302. ; 99, s. 161-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Combined theoretical and experimental efforts are put forward to study the critical factors influencing deformation mode transitions in face-centered cubic materials. We revisit the empirical relationship between the stacking fault energy (SFE) and the prevalent deformation mechanism. With ab initio calculated SFE, we establish the critical boundaries between various deformation modes in the model Cr-CoNi solid solution alloys. Satisfying agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental observations are reached. Our findings shield light on applying quantum mechanical calculations in designing transformation-induced plasticity and twinning-induced plasticity mechanisms for achieving advanced mechanical properties.
