  • Organisation and Communication Problems in Automotive Requirements Engineering
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Requirements Engineering. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0947-3602 .- 1432-010X. ; 23:1, s. 145-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Project success in the automotive industry is highly influenced by Requirements Engineering (RE), for which communication and organisation structure play a major role, much due to the scale and distribution of these projects. However, empirical research is scarce on these aspects of automotive RE and warrants closer examination. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to identify problems or challenges in automotive RE with respect to communication and organisation structure. Using a multiple-case study approach, we collected data via 14 semi-structured interviews at one car manufacturer and one supplier. We tested our findings from the case study with a questionnaire distributed to practitioners in the automotive industry. Our results indicate that it is difficult but increasingly important to establish communication channels outside the fixed organisation structure and that responsibilities are often unclear. Product knowledge during early requirements elicitation and context knowledge later on is lacking. Furthermore, abstraction gaps between requirements on different abstraction levels leads to inconsistencies. For academia, we formulate a concrete agenda for future research. Practitioners can use the findings to broaden their understanding of how the problems manifest and to improve their organisations.

  • Towards Formalizing Assumptions on Architectural Level: A Proof-of-Concept
  • 2012
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • While designing an architecture, architects often make assumptions about different factors like execution environment, structural properties of the artifacts, properties of input/output data etc. Implicit and invalid assumptions have been identified as a primary reason for architectural mismatches. Such mismatches cause nightmares to the people working at the system integration phase. Today’s complex systems operate in dynamic and rapidly changing environments. Implicit assumptions in the reusable components often make it challenging to adopt the components in a changed operational domain. If not documented, assumptions are often forgotten and it is both difficult and expensive to find them out from previously built software. This paper aims to formally capture assumptions at the architecture level so that they can be checked automatically throughout the system development. Automated checking of assumptions would facilitate a practicable assumption management system for complex and large-scale software system development with smooth integration and evolution.

  • Automated User Interaction Analysis for Workflow-Based Web Portals
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Software Business. - Cham : Springer. ; 182, s. 148-162
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Success in the software market requires constant improvement of the software. These improvements however have to directly align with the needs of the users of the software. A recent trend in software engineering is to collect post-deployment data about how users use a software system. We report in this paper about a case study with an industrial partner in which (1) we identified which data has to be collected for a web-based portal system, (2) implemented the data collection, and (3) performed an experiment comparing the collected data with answers of the test subjects in a survey.

  • Mechanisms for leveraging models at runtime in self-adaptive software
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science: Dagstuhl Seminar 11481 on Models@run.time; ; 27 November 2011 through 2 December 2011. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319089140
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Modern software systems are often required to adapt their behavior at runtime in order to maintain or enhance their utility in dynamic environments. Models at runtime research aims to provide suitable abstractions, techniques, and tools to manage the complexity of adapting software systems at runtime. In this chapter, we discuss challenges associated with developing mechanisms that leverage models at runtime to support runtime software adaptation. Specifically, we discuss challenges associated with developing effective mechanisms for supervising running systems, reasoning about and planning adaptations, maintaining consistency among multiple runtime models, and maintaining fidelity of runtime models with respect to the running system and its environment. We discuss related problems and state-of-the-art mechanisms, and identify open research challenges.

  • Towards transactional self-adaption for AUTOSAR on the example of a collision detection system
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proc. of the 10th Workshop Automotive Software Engineering, 17th September 2012, Braunschweig, Germany.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Within the last decade important automotive OEMs have created and released the system architecture standard AUTOSAR, and tools to support the development process are widely available. However, the resulting system architecture, which is logically modeled in the Virtual Functional Bus (VFB) and realized by generating a Runtime Environment (RTE), which corresponds to the concrete network of ECUs, is static in terms of runtime adaptability. As long as vehicle functions dominate which are executed exclusively on separated ECUs, there is only a limited demand for runtime adaptation. However, as soon as several vehicle functions are grouped to run on one ECU, which is enabled by AUTOSAR, or one vehicle function is composed of several independent software components, runtime adaptation is getting increasingly interesting. Potential use cases are for example energy-level based function adaptation or vehicle-to-X communication related function adaptation. In this paper, a concept of self-adaptation for AUTOSAR is outlined on the example of a collision detection and warning system, for which the timing correctness during the self-adaptation process is verified with timed automata and the model checking tool UPPAAL

  • An investigation of Technical Debt in Automatic Production Systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. - New York, NY, USA : ACM. - 9781450352642 ; Part F129907
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Technical Debt is a recent concept, borrowed from the financial domain. It has been recently used in software development to describe technical sub-optimal solutions that have short-term benefits but long-term extra-costs. However, no body of literature investigates how Automatic Production Systems companies deal with Technical Debt. We investigated how Technical Debt is known, how much it hurts and how is managed in an automatic production systems company. Results from one in-depth investigation show that the automatic production systems company spend quite a lot of resources because of Technical Debt, both in the extra-costs (interest) and in its management. The company presents moderate awareness of what Technical Debt is and how much is present in its systems. However, the tracking level is quite low. We, therefore, claim that Technical Debt needs more research in this domain, as it is a source of substantial extra-costs and the current practices to manage it are not suitable.

  • Challenges and Research Directions for Successfully Applying MBE Tools in Practice
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: CEUR Workshop Proceedings. - 1613-0073. ; 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Model Based Engineering aims to improve efficiency and effectiveness of software engineering. Success in industrial practice of MBE does not only depend on the modeling languages and constructive or analytical approaches, like code generation or model checking. It is also heavily influenced by the quality and, particularly, usability of the used tools. In this position paper, we discuss challenges experienced in applying MBE in practice both from academic as well as industrial viewpoints. Based on the research challenges, we discuss future research directions to improve the chances for the success of MBE in industrial practice.
