  • Gelebte Mehrsprachigkeit im Plattenbau : Untersuchungen von Narrativen und Praktiken russlanddeutscher junger Erwachsener
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis focuses on the lived multilingualism of a group of young Russian-German adults who as children migrated together with their families from post-Soviet states to the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1990s. Today these adults live in a ‘Plattenbau’ housing estate in a small town in one of the new federal states of Germany. The large pre-fabricated concrete-slab system-built housing estates that were built during the GDR-era are today generally considered as deprived areas due a combination of decreasing population and high unemployment. This thesis shows how young Russian-Germans create a multilingual community of practice and use various aspects of language and non-linguistic resources for identity construction. The data analysed in this thesis comes from ethnographic studies conducted during three phases of fieldwork between Spring 2011 and Spring 2012. The data was collected at a youth centre where the group of young Russian-German adults regularly met.Combining intensive participant observation, field notes, photos, and narrative interviews the thesis is a mixed-method investigation. Underpinning the analysis of the research data are theoretical models of the relationship between language, identity, and space. Methodologically this study combines linguistic ethnography, narrative analysis, and membership categorization analysis. The thesis argues that an ethnographical-narrative approach is a powerful tool that is able to highlight the role of language(s) and non-linguistic resources for identity construction in social spaces, illustrates how young Russian-Germans construct a web of multilingual identities by using social categories to position themselves and others, and shows how the lived multilingualism of  young Russian-German adults influences all aspects of their social lives. For example, the thesis shows the maintenance of Russian as a heritage language within Russian-German families, yet and an avoidance of visible signs of the Russian-German heritage in public spaces.

  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this compilation thesis I examine Internet memes within the political discourse of the three major German-speaking countries Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The analysis incorporates several theoretical and methodological approaches, including politolinguistics and discourse studies, text linguistics, multimodality theory and media linguistics. The central driving questions of this research are as follows:How does political language manifest visually and textually in memes? What role do the Internet, social network platforms, and their affordances play in the creation and dissemination of memes? How do memes contribute to diverse political discourses? Three distinct studies examine memes within different contexts to address these questions:Study 1 investigates memes as satirical texts, analyzing a collection of memes published by two German TV news parodies on their Facebook platform. These memes focus on the 2017 G-20 summit held in Hamburg. The dataset comprises 27 memes, along with public Facebook comments accompanying these memes. Applying medialinguistic approaches and concepts from discourse analysis, this study explores how memes employ satire and interact with the Internet as a medium, particularly on the Facebook platform.Study 2 concentrates on memes within political campaigns. For this purpose, a collection of 64 memes published on the Swiss political group Operation Libero's Facebook page during referendum campaigns was gathered. A close reading, drawing from both multimodality theory and the discourse historical approach, addresses questions about how arguments are constructed within internet memes in terms of both image and text, as well as how memes interact with the broader political discourse.Study 3 examines memes from Austria, Germany and Switzerland as populist texts, applying Moffitt's conceptualization of populist style (2016). A data-based investigation rooted in the discourse historical approach and multimodality theory analyzes memes with varying political alignments. The study assesses how these memes express features of populist style, such as the appeal to the people vs. the elite, the use of bad manners, and the performance of crisis. Special focus is given to the political context and the semiotic resources used to convey populist themes. The introductory chapter provides insights into various definitions of memes and their historical development, culminating in the identification of eight prototypical characteristics. These characteristics serve as the foundation for subsequent analyses. In summary, this research underscores the significance of memes as a mode of political expression in the digital age. Analyzing political memes provides valuable insights into the evolving landscape of political language and discourse in an increasingly online political environment.

  • Mediale Emotionskulturen
  • 2019

  • Distributed Meta-Learning for Context Based on Culture Heritage Collection Data in an Immersive Reality System
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Procedia Computer Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 1877-0509. ; 210, s. 70-77
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article proposes a new workflow for Culture Heritage (CH) Collection Data in which distributed meta-learning with context-based fusion is required. The multidisciplinary research outlines a new paradigm for collaborative creation of a context- based data fusion CH workflow. Whose criterion restricts the search space to the cultural sector to include multiple other CH object types, texts and predominantly analyzes visualizations of CH object metadata. The approach promotes user-driven content creation and offsets economic models, thereby rewarding creators and performers. In response to these challenges, we propose a framework for bringing about massive and real-time presence and awareness on the Internet through an Internet of Things infrastructure to connect objects, context and intangible assets. We enable an online virtual world that incorporates proximity of pervasive information, objects, people, processes, data and places. Finally, we investigate some new ways to achieve immersive experiences via distributed meta-learning computing and point out the necessity to do more with regard to collaborative interaction creation.
