  • Behavioral interference and facilitation in the foraging cycle shape the functional response
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Behavioral Ecology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1045-2249 .- 1465-7279. ; 18:2, s. 354-357
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Individual forager behaviors should affect per capita intake rates and thereby population and consumer-resource properties. We consider and incorporate conspecific facilitation and interference during the separate foraging-cycle stages in a functional response model that links individual behavioral interactions with consumer-resource processes. Our analyses suggest that failing to properly consider and include all effects of behavioral interactions on foraging-cycle stage performances may either over- or underestimate effects of interactions on the shape of both functional responses and predator zero-growth isoclines. Incorporation of prey- and predator-dependent interactions among foragers in the model produces predator isoclines with potentials for highly complex consumer-resource dynamics. Facilitation and interference during the foraging cycle are therefore suggested as potent behavioral mechanisms to cause patterns of community dynamics. We emphasize that correct estimations of interaction-mediated foraging-cycle efficiencies should be considered in empirical and theoretical attempts to further our understanding of the mechanistic link between social behaviors and higher order processes.

  • Activin A inhibits BMP-signaling by binding ACVR2A and ACVR2B.
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Cell Communication and Signaling. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1478-811X. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Activins are members of the TGF-β family of ligands that have multiple biological functions in embryonic stem cells as well as in differentiated tissue. Serum levels of activin A were found to be elevated in pathological conditions such as cachexia, osteoporosis and cancer. Signaling by activin A through canonical ALK4-ACVR2 receptor complexes activates the transcription factors SMAD2 and SMAD3. Activin A has a strong affinity to type 2 receptors, a feature that they share with some of the bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs). Activin A is also elevated in myeloma patients with advanced disease and is involved in myeloma bone disease.

  • Use of Linked Nordic Registries for Population Studies in Hematologic Cancers: The Case of Multiple Myeloma
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Clinical Epidemiology. - : Dove Medical Press. - 1179-1349. ; 15, s. 987-999
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Linked health-care registries and high coverage in Nordic countries lend themselves well to epidemiologic research. Given its relatively high incidence in Western Europe, complexity in diagnosis, and challenges in registration, multiple myeloma (MM) wasselected to compare registries in Denmark, Finland, and Sweden.Patients and Methods: Data were obtained from four archetypal registries in each country (spanning January 2005–October 2018):National Patient Registry (NPR), Prescribed Drug Registry (PDR), Cancer Registry (CR), and Cause of Death Registry. Patients newlydiagnosed with MM who received MM-specific treatment were included. PDR/NPR treatment records were used to assess incidentNPR cases. The registration quality of MM-specific drugs in the PDR of each country was also evaluated. Results: In Denmark, only 6% of patients in the NPR were not registered in the CR; in Sweden, it was 16.9%. No systematicdifferences were identified that could explain this discrepancy. In Denmark, lenalidomide and bortezomib were registered in the NPRwith high coverage, but less expensive drugs typically given in combination with bortezomib were not covered in any of the registries. In Finland and Sweden, bortezomib records were not identified in the PDR, but some were in the NPR; other drugs had good coveragein the PDR.Conclusions: The registries evaluated in this study can be used to identify the MM population; however, given the gaps in MMregistration in the Finnish and Swedish CRs, Danish registries provide the most comprehensive datasets for research on treatmentpatterns for MM.

  • Does Low-Molecular-Weight Heparin Influence the Antimyeloma Effects of Thalidomide? A Retrospective Analysis of Data from the GIMEMA, Nordic and Turkish Myeloma Study Groups
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acta Haematologica. - : S. Karger AG. - 1421-9662 .- 0001-5792. ; 133:4, s. 372-380
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background/Aim: Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) has been shown to prolong survival among patients with solid tumors, but its role among myeloma patients is unknown. Patients: Data from the GIMEMA (Gruppo Italiano Malattie Ematologiche dell'Adulto), Nordic and Turkish myeloma study groups comparing melphalan and prednisolone with (MPT, n: 404) or without thalidomide (MP, n: 393) are analyzed for effects of LMWH. Forty percent (159/394) of the patients on MPT and 7.4% (29/390) in the MP arm received LMWH. Results: Thalidomide improved response and progression-free survival (PFS). Regardless of thalidomide treatment, response rate was higher among those receiving LMWH vs. none vs. other anticoagulants (58.1 vs. 44.9 vs. 50.4%, p = 0.01). PFS was significantly longer (median 32 vs. 21 and 17 vs. 17 months, p = 0.004) only among international scoring system (ISS) I patients receiving MPT +/- LMWH vs. MP +/- LMWH. The group of MPT patients who also received LMWH had a better OS compared to those who did not [45 months, 95% confidence interval (CI) 27.7-62.3, vs. 32 months, 95% CI 26.1-37.9; p = 0.034]. When multivariate analysis was repeated in subgroups, thalidomide was no longer a significant factor (response, PFS) among those receiving LMWH. Conclusion: Addition of LMWH to MPT, in particular in patients with low ISS, suggests additive effects, but the results are limited by the retrospective design of our study. (C) 2015 S.
