  • Real-time observation of X-ray-induced intramolecular and interatomic electronic decay in CH2I2
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasing availability of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) has catalyzed the development of single-object structural determination and of structural dynamics tracking in real-time. Disentangling the molecular-level reactions triggered by the interaction with an XFEL pulse is a fundamental step towards developing such applications. Here we report real-time observations of XFEL-induced electronic decay via short-lived transient electronic states in the diiodomethane molecule, using a femtosecond near-infrared probe laser. We determine the lifetimes of the transient states populated during the XFEL-induced Auger cascades and find that multiply charged iodine ions are issued from short-lived (∼20 fs) transient states, whereas the singly charged ones originate from significantly longer-lived states (∼100 fs). We identify the mechanisms behind these different time scales: contrary to the short-lived transient states which relax by molecular Auger decay, the long-lived ones decay by an interatomic Coulombic decay between two iodine atoms, during the molecular fragmentation. © 2019, The Author(s).

  • An Earth-sized Planet around an M5 Dwarf Star at 22 pc
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 1538-3881 .- 0004-6256. ; 165:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on the discovery of an Earth-sized transiting planet (R p = 1.015 ± 0.051 R ⊕) in a P = 4.02 day orbit around K2-415 (EPIC 211414619), an M5V star at 22 pc. The planet candidate was first identified by analyzing the light-curve data obtained by the K2 mission, and it is here shown to exist in the most recent data from TESS. Combining the light curves with the data secured by our follow-up observations, including high-resolution imaging and near-infrared spectroscopy with IRD, we rule out false-positive scenarios, finding a low false-positive probability of 2 × 10−4. Based on IRD’s radial velocities of K2-415, which were sparsely taken over three years, we obtain a planet mass of 3.0 ± 2.7 M ⊕ (M p < 7.5 M ⊕ at 95% confidence) for K2-415b. Being one of the lowest-mass stars (≈0.16 M ⊙) known to host an Earth-sized transiting planet, K2-415 will be an interesting target for further follow-up observations, including additional radial velocity monitoring and transit spectroscopy.

  • The Discovery and Follow-up of Four Transiting Short-period Sub-Neptunes Orbiting M Dwarfs
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Astronomical Journal. - 1538-3881 .- 0004-6256. ; 167:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sub-Neptunes with radii of 2-3 R ⊕ are intermediate in size between rocky planets and Neptune-sized planets. The orbital properties and bulk compositions of transiting sub-Neptunes provide clues to the formation and evolution of close-in small planets. In this paper, we present the discovery and follow-up of four sub-Neptunes orbiting M dwarfs (TOI-782, TOI-1448, TOI-2120, and TOI-2406), three of which were newly validated by ground-based follow-up observations and statistical analyses. TOI-782 b, TOI-1448 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b have radii of R p = 2.740 − 0.079 + 0.082 R ⊕ , 2.769 − 0.068 + 0.073 R ⊕ , 2.120 ± 0.067 R ⊕, and 2.830 − 0.066 + 0.068 R ⊕ and orbital periods of P = 8.02, 8.11, 5.80, and 3.08 days, respectively. Doppler monitoring with the Subaru/InfraRed Doppler instrument led to 2σ upper limits on the masses of <19.1 M ⊕, <19.5 M ⊕, <6.8 M ⊕, and <15.6 M ⊕ for TOI-782 b, TOI-1448 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b, respectively. The mass-radius relationship of these four sub-Neptunes testifies to the existence of volatile material in their interiors. These four sub-Neptunes, which are located above the so-called “radius valley,” are likely to retain a significant atmosphere and/or an icy mantle on the core, such as a water world. We find that at least three of the four sub-Neptunes (TOI-782 b, TOI-2120 b, and TOI-2406 b), orbiting M dwarfs older than 1 Gyr, are likely to have eccentricities of e ∼ 0.2-0.3. The fact that tidal circularization of their orbits is not achieved over 1 Gyr suggests inefficient tidal dissipation in their interiors.

  • Extreme Nature of Four Blue-excess Dust-obscured Galaxies Revealed by Optical Spectroscopy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Astrophysical Journal. - : American Astronomical Society. - 1538-4357 .- 0004-637X. ; 941:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report optical spectroscopic observations of four blue-excess dust-obscured galaxies (BluDOGs) identified by the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam. BluDOGs are a subclass of dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs; defined with the extremely red color (i − [22])AB ≥ 7.0; Toba et al., showing a significant flux excess in the optical g and r bands over the power-law fits to the fluxes at the longer wavelengths. Noboriguchi et al. have suggested that BluDOGs may correspond to the blowing-out phase involved in a gas-rich major-merger scenario. However, the detailed properties of BluDOGs are not understood because of the lack of spectroscopic information. In this work, we carry out deep optical spectroscopic observations of four BluDOGs using Subaru/FOCAS and VLT/FORS2. The obtained spectra show broad emission lines with extremely large equivalent widths, and a blue wing in the C iv line profile. The redshifts are between 2.2 and 3.3. The averaged rest-frame equivalent widths of the C iv lines are 160 ± 33 Å, ∼7 times higher than the average of a typical type 1 quasar. The FWHMs of their velocity profiles are between 1990 and 4470 km s−1, and their asymmetric parameters are 0.05 and 0.25. Such strong C iv lines significantly affect the broadband magnitudes, which are partly the origin of the blue excess seen in the spectral energy distribution of BluDOGs. Their estimated supermassive black hole masses are 1.1 × 108 < M BH/M ⊙ <5.5 × 108. The inferred Eddington ratios of the BluDOGs are higher than 1 (1.1 < λ Edd < 3.8), suggesting that the BluDOGs are in a rapidly evolving phase of supermassive black holes.

  • The globalizability of temporal discounting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Human Behaviour. - : Springer Nature. - 2397-3374. ; 6:10, s. 1386-1397
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Economic inequality is associated with preferences for smaller, immediate gains over larger, delayed ones. Such temporal discounting may feed into rising global inequality, yet it is unclear whether it is a function of choice preferences or norms, or rather the absence of sufficient resources for immediate needs. It is also not clear whether these reflect true differences in choice patterns between income groups. We tested temporal discounting and five intertemporal choice anomalies using local currencies and value standards in 61 countries (N = 13,629). Across a diverse sample, we found consistent, robust rates of choice anomalies. Lower-income groups were not significantly different, but economic inequality and broader financial circumstances were clearly correlated with population choice patterns. Ruggeri et al. find in a study of 61 countries that temporal discounting patterns are globally generalizable. Worse financial environments, greater inequality and high inflation are associated with extreme or inconsistent long-term decisions.

  • Magnetic phase diagram of Eu 1- x Ca x Co 2 P 2 determined using muon spin rotation and relaxation
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 109:14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study investigated the magnetic nature of a solid solution system consisting of EuCo2P2 and CaCo2P2 using a muon spin rotation and relaxation (mu +SR) technique, which is sensitive to local magnetic environments. The former compound EuCo2P2 is known to enter an incommensurate helical antiferromagnetic (AF) phase below 66 K with neutrons, which was confirmed by the present mu +SR. The magnitude of the ordered Eu moments proposed with neutrons was found to be consistent with that estimated by mu +SR. Furthermore, the latter lattice-collapsed tetragonal phase compound CaCo2P2 is known to enter an A-type AF phase below 90 K, and mu +SR measurements on single crystals revealed the presence of a spin reorientation transition at around 40 K, below which the A-type AF order is likely to be completed. Although all Eu1-xCaxCo2P2 compounds were found to enter a magnetic phase at low temperatures regardless of x, a static ordered state was formed only at the vicinity of the two end compounds, i.e., 0 x 0.4 and 0.9 x 1. Instead, a disordered state, i.e., a random spin-glass state, short-range ordered state, or highly fluctuating state was found in the x range between 0.4 and 0.9, even at the lowest measured temperature (2 K). Together with the magnetization data, our findings clarified the magnetic phase diagram of Eu1-xCaxCo2P2, where a ferromagnetic exchange interaction between Co ions through the Eu2+ ion competes with a direct AF interaction among the Co ions, particularly in the x range between 0.57 and 0.9. This competition yielded multiple phases in Eu1-xCaxCo2P2.

The former compound EuCo2⁢P2 is known to enter an incommensurate helical antiferromagnetic (AF) phase below 66 K with neutrons, which was confirmed by the present ?+⁢SR. The magnitude of the ordered Eu moments proposed with neutrons was found to be consistent with that estimated by ?+⁢SR. Furthermore, the latter lattice-collapsed tetragonal phase compound CaCo2⁢P2 is known to enter an ?-type AF phase below 90 K, and ?+⁢SR measurements on single crystals revealed the presence of a spin reorientation transition at around 40 K, below which the ?-type AF order is likely to be completed. Although all Eu1−?⁢Ca?⁢Co2⁢P2 compounds were found to enter a magnetic phase at low temperatures regardless of ?, a static ordered state was formed only at the vicinity of the two end compounds, i.e., 0≤?≤0.4 and 0.9≤?≤1. Instead, a disordered state, i.e., a random spin-glass state, short-range ordered state, or highly fluctuating state was found in the ? range between 0.4 and 0.9, even at the lowest measured temperature (2 K).
