  • Cardiovascular Evaluation of Master Athletes and Middle-aged/Senior Individuals Engaged in Leisure-time Sport Activities
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Cardiac Electrophysiology Clinics. - 1877-9182. ; 5:1, s. 33-42
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Regular physical activity induces significant health benefits and most middle-aged/senior individuals should therefore be encouraged to increase their level of physical activity. Sporting activity may be especially beneficial because it is intense enough to increase cardiovascular, muscular, and metabolic fitness, compared with everyday physical activity. The rationale for evaluation of middle-aged/senior individuals is to ensure their safe participation in leisure-time sports, with the aim of maximizing the benefits while minimizing the risks of exercise. This article reviews the existing recommendations on evaluation of master athletes and middle-aged/senior individuals before they take part in physical activity and sports.

  • Differential effects of resveratrol on the dilator responses of femoral arteries, ex vivo
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nitric oxide. - : Elsevier. - 1089-8603 .- 1089-8611. ; 92, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resveratrol is a plant-derived phytoalexin with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cardio-protective properties and may be a promising therapeutic intervention strategy in cardiovascular disease. Here, we investigated the acute direct effects of trans-resveratrol (RV), on acetylcholine (ACh)-induced and flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of isolated pressurized femoral arteries of young (4-month-old) and old (26-month-old) mice. Vessel exposure to RV enhanced ACh (0.01-1.0 mM)-induced dilation (p < 0.05), but not FMD (@ 5-10 μL⋅min-1) (p < 0.05) in both young and old mice. After RV incubation, acute nitric oxide (NO) production by cultured endothelial cells was increased in response to 0.01 mM ACh, but reduced by flow (5-10 μL⋅min-1; p < 0.05). In isolated femoral arteries from endothelial nitric oxide synthase knockout (eNOS-/-) mice, RV had no overall effect on flow mediated dilation, but potentiated ACh induced dilation, that was completely abolished by potassium channel blockers, Apamin and Tram 34 (p < 0.01). We demonstrate that the non-metabolised form of RV stimulates ACh-induced dilation via the NO and EDHF pathways, but not FMD by interaction with the cyclo-oxygenase pathway. Our findings have important implications in the use of RV (for both young and aged) under 'normal' non-diseased physiological states.

  • Recommendations for participation in leisure-time physical activity and competitive sports in patients with arrhythmias and potentially arrhythmogenic conditions - Part 1 : Supraventricular arrhythmias and pacemakers
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention & Rehabilitation. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1741-8267 .- 1741-8275. ; 13:4, s. 475-484
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This document by the Study Group on Sports Cardiology of the European Society of Cardiology extends on previous recommendations for sports participation for competitive athletes by also incorporating guidelines for those who want to perform recreational physical activity. For different supraventricular arrhythmias and arrhythmogenic conditions, a description of the relationship between the condition and physical activity is given, stressing how arrhythmias can be influenced by exertion or can be a reflection of the (patho)physiological cardiac adaptation to sports participation itself. The following topics are covered in this text: sinus bradycardia; atrioventricular nodal conduction disturbances; pacemakers; atrial premature beats; paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia without pre-excitation; pre-excitation, asymptomatic or with associated arrhythmias (i.e. Wolff -Parkinson-White syndrome); atrial fibrillation; and atrial flutter. A related document discusses ventricular arrhythmias, channelopathies and implantable cardioverter defibrillators.

  • Assessment of physical activity - a review of methodologies with reference to epidemiological research : a report of the exercise physiology section of the European Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cardiovascular Prevention & Rehabilitation. - 1741-8267 .- 1741-8275. ; 17:2, s. 127-139
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Physical activity has a fundamental role in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. The precise measurement of physical activity is key to many surveillance and epidemiological studies investigating trends and associations with disease. Public health initiatives aimed at increasing physical activity rely on the measurement of physical activity to monitor their effectiveness. Physical activity is multidimensional, and a complex behaviour to measure; its various domains are often misunderstood. Inappropriate or crude measures of physical activity have serious implications, and are likely to lead to misleading results and underestimate effect size. In this review, key definitions and theoretical aspects, which underpin the measurement of physical activity, are briefly discussed. Methodologies particularly suited for use in epidemiological research are reviewed, with particular reference to their validity, primary outcome measure and considerations when using each in the field. It is acknowledged that the choice of method may be a compromise between accuracy level and feasibility, but the ultimate choice of tool must suit the stated aim of the research. A framework is presented to guide researchers on the selection of the most suitable tool for use in a specific study.
