  • Art Studies, Post-processual Perspectives on (Gender, Landscape)
  • 2020. - 2nd
  • Ingår i: Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319517261
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The archaeology of art has developed within various theoretical frameworks, resulting in a spectrum of diverse but also partly overlapping approaches and interpretations (see the chapter “Archaeology of Art: Theoretical Frameworks”). Post-processualist approaches to art studies in archaeology acknowledged for the first time a dynamic aspect of ancient art as a form of material culture, previously denied by processual and normative approaches which placed emphasis on the reflective and functional properties of art forms. Although aspects such as aesthetics, style, or positivist analyses of art forms continue to be relevant in a post-processual material culture perspective, they are now incorporated in nuanced analyses that seek to reveal the dynamic ways in which art and human agents are mutually shaped in the context of production and use.

  • Spatialities of Byzantine Culture From the Human Body to the Universe
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • “Space Matters!” claimed Doreen Massey and John Allen at the heart of the Spatial Turn developments (1984). Compensating a four-decades shortfall, this collective volume is the first reader in Byzantine spatial studies. It contextualizes the spatial turn in historical studies by means of interdisciplinary dialogue. An introduction offers an up-to-date state of the art. Twenty-nine case studies provide a wide range of different conceptualizations of space in Byzantine culture articulated in a single collection through a variety of topics and approaches. An afterword frames the future challenges of Byzantine spatial studies in a changing world where space is a claim and a precarious social value.

  • Encroachment, Subdivision, and Expansion: : a Cultural Interpretation of Byzantine Spatial Transformation (6th–9th centuries)
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Transformations of city and countryside in Byzantium. - Mainz : Verlag des Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseums. - 9783884673386 ; , s. 25-38
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper considers information on Byzantine secular and religious spaces (buildings, settlements, landscapes), deriving from archaeological evidence and texts, in order to define and interpret their transformations from the 6th to the 9th centuries. Transformations in urban, rural and other environments are comparatively evaluated so as to allow involving political, economic and cultural aspects in a discussion of: a) the structures, which were transformed, b) the human agencies, which produced the transformations, and c) the challenges responsible for these agencies. These developments are approached through contemporary archaeological theories of agency and non-representational theories (or theories of practices) in cultural geography. These theories are used to shift focus from the meanings of products of human agency into the meanings of human, »habitual« everyday practices in Byzantium; the main argument in favour of this shift is that the scrutiny of social practices allows non-intentionalist accounts of Byzantine transformation acts.

  • Geographies of Consumption in Byzantine Epirus : Urban space, commodification, and consumption practices from the 7th to the 12th century
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Feeding the Byzantine City. - Turnhout : Brepols. - 9782503605661 - 9782503605678 ; , s. 79-112
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on examples from medieval Western Greek mainland, this study aims to produce a set of diachronic located views of various Byzantine cultures of consumption, i.e. distinct and dated Byzantine consumption geographies. It shows that the latter is documented in material forms as well as in narrative ones. The discussion of both these forms inevitably involves a consideration of certain broader problems, such as the different approaches towards a definition of the notion of 'consumption', and the use of 'consumption geographies' in Medieval studies in the first place.

  • L’habitat en Grèce pendant les IVe–IXe siècles
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Antiquité tardive. - 1250-7334 .- 2295-9718. ; 21, s. 125-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
