  • Tentacular Classrooms: Feminist Transformative Learning for Thinking and Sensing
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transformative Education. - : SAGE Publications. - 1541-3446 .- 1552-7840. ; 21:1, s. 26-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Integrative transformative learning in a feminist perspective asks students to engage in potentially troublesome and unsettling debates, to confront their own privilege and situated knowledges, and to experiment with conventional boundaries for knowledge production. We introduce the idea of the “tentacular classroom” grounded in the work of Haraway on tentacular thinking to show the ways in which the learning encounter, figured as a tentacular organism, allows for co-production and multiplicity in knowledge production. Through two illustrative examples from gender studies classrooms, we show what is at stake when unruly tentacles become involved in disrupting the boundedness imposed on teaching and learning in the neo-liberal university context. We conclude that a tentacular classroom entails confrontations with troublesome knowledges but also with troublesome unlearning as well, leading teachers and learners to an alternative point of departure for the learning encounter

  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Antirasistiska Akademin.

  • Undoing Colonial Temporalities - Presentism and the Future of the Post/Past
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Anglistica AION - An Interdisciplinary Journal. - 2035-8504. ; 23:2, s. 83-96
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to explore the notion of presentism as a way of looking at the fraught temporalities of the post-/de- ‘pre-fixing frontier’ in colonialism studies. Drawing on various interpretations of the concept, presentism can be said to manifest when societies become unable to imagine a future or a past, because of structured powers keen on preserving the status quo. Using a combination of data from media ethnography and literary criticism, we intend to assess the productivity of an updated notion of presentism for the ongoing debates on the coloniality of power. Instances of arrested and recursive temporalities exemplified in recent Anglophone African novels as well as in Swedish media discourses on migration will serve as case studies. Issues of memory and denial, as well as the ideological claim that enduring phenomena such as immigration should be considered symptoms of a contemporary migratory crisis, will be at the centre of our investigation.

  • Förankring och Dialog : Kraftspelet mellan planering och demokrati
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is a human geography study of how local planners prepared, implemented and followed up a dialogue with the inhabitants in Alby, a multicultural community. The planners based their work on the ambition that everything that is done to develop Alby should be anchored among the residents in a democratic manner. This thesis analyses this double interpretation and how it appears in the planners’ work. The study uses a combination of different action-theoretic approaches for analysing what the planners did. A normative approach is used together with genealogic approaches on power and rhetoric. To make use of these action theories in a multicultural community the thesis explores radical feminism (situated knowledge) and postcolonial theory.Methodologically, the study is based on participatory observation. It analyses how the planners anchor decisions using a subject–object approach. The approach steered the planners into a situation in which their administrative system-world grew at the expense of both a sustainable democratic development and losing contact with the life-world of the local inhabitants. During the meetings the planners came in contact with some local activists. From their situated knowledge, the activists gave practical examples on how to make the planners’ system-world more sensitive to the reality of the inhabitants. The thesis stresses the importance of a life-world perspective on local planning and the potential of local meetings, situated knowledge and phronesis to make the planners’ work sensitive to the reality of the inhabitants.

  • Att gestalta Chthulucenen - Om hur kvinnor stärker släktbanden med havssköldpaddor i Nicaragua : Performing the Chthulucene – on how women strengthen kinship with sea turtles in Nicaragua
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Tidsskriftet Antropologi. - : Det Kgl. Bibliotek/Royal Danish Library. - 0906-3021 .- 2596-5425. ; :83, s. 65-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article studies how women’s caring roles in the Nicaraguan fishing village of Padre Ramos, are extended even to turtles. As such, it reminds Donna Haraway’s fictive figures and metaphors about the kind of small critters predominant during the chthulucene, the era when humans strengthen their kinship with all other life forms to live and die better together on earth. Padre Ramos is visited annually by hawksbill turtles to lay their eggs. As the species is threatened with extinction, the village adopted the turtles as its flagship species, then transiting from hunting to caring for turtles. Although the villagers were the most vital link to save the turtles, they lived under constant threat to die out as a community or be evicted from the nature reserve. Through a ten-day anthropological action with video power, the author follows the women’s rhizovocality when they decided to occupy an unused centrally located plot in the village to build a playground with turtles as the central theme. Through this action, the women’s acted like „small critters” that bit into the compost of authorities’ rotten moral practices while reusing old car tires, logs, and pallets in the construction. Thus, the playground became a monument to the village’s new kinship with the turtles, the women’s roles as a healing force in the nature reserve as much as in the moral account. The situation highlighted how current efforts to stop the massive extinction of species are being conducted in deep power conflicts. The chthulucene is necessary but also marked by conflicts of interest.

  • Barrio women and Energopower in Medellín, Colombia
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Latin American Studies. - 0022-216X .- 1469-767X. ; 49:2, s. 355-382
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues that the prepaid energy system put into operation in Medellín and across Colombia worked as an expression of ‘energopower’; that is, energy as a means to govern societies. The article uses press archives and company statements, official statistics and group interviews to show how energopower operates in Medellín along three lines: that Empresas Públicas de Medellín, the city's public utility company, encouraged disconnected and displaced people as new buyers of prepaid energy services instead of citizens entitled to those services; that the implementation of the prepaid energy system coincided with the vertiginous capitalisation that allowed the city to fund its ‘Social Urbanism’ and EPM to expand operations across Colombia and other countries in Latin America; and, that prepaid electricity as a tool of energopower subjugated displaced and disconnected populations to new forms of affordability that prompted barrio women to understand and oppose its disciplining methods of domination.

  • Barrio Women’s Gendering Practices for Sustainable Urbanism in Caracas, Venezuela
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Anita Lacey (edt) Women, Urbanization and Sustainability - Practices of Survival. Adaptation and Resistance. - London : Palgrave McMillan. - 9781349951826 ; , s. 67-89
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter aims to examine the sustainability of los pobladores’ community building approach. The chapter presents how these pobladores, a women dominated urban movement, mobilized capital—other than that received as land, materials and state loans—to build and refurbish their housing projects. It follows los pobladores, through both participatory observation and video from the good days of the oil bonanza in 2010 to the meagre days of plummeting international oil prices in 2015. The chapter presents how los pobladores women performed their gendering practices as congruent with a material feminist planning approach set in the context of the current urban revolution. In this context the rainy seasons introduced the post-humanist turn that pushed the government to adopt a massive housing programme, La Gran Mision Vivienda Venezuela, GMVV. In exploring some expressions of barrio women’ s sustainable urbanism the chapter discusses how barrio women’s activism constitutes a diffractive phenomenon that gendered the organization of work. This is an approach that shaped a sustainable community building by disrupting male dominances both in revolutionary activism and in building the urban space.
