  • Expected performance of the superconducting submillimeter-wave limb emission sounder compared with aircraft data
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Radio Science. - 0048-6604 .- 1944-799X. ; 40:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The simulated retrieval performance of a submillimeter wave limb sounder was compared with that of an up-looking instrument with identical observation frequency bands and comparable noise temperature. The frequency bands were 624.32-626.32 and 649.12-650.32 GHz, and the retrieval simulations focused on the key trace gas species O-3, HCl, and ClO. As expected, the limb geometry leads to a better altitude resolution and larger measurement altitude range. The same retrieval setup was applied to measured spectra, taken by the up-looking Airborne Submillimeter Radiometer ( ASUR) instrument on 4 September 2002 at 19.11 degrees E, 71.90 degrees N and on 19 September 2002 at 44.10 degrees E, 4.10 degrees S. The observed structures in the fit residual near the HCl spectral lines at 625.9 GHz lead to the conclusion that the pressure shift parameter of HCl is likely to be higher than the value in the HITRAN spectroscopic database. Depending on the assumed temperature dependence of the shift, the HCl pressure shift value consistent with the ASUR data is 0.090-0.117 MHz/hPa instead of the 0.030 MHz/hPa reported in HITRAN. This result is in good agreement with very recent independent laboratory work which suggests a value of 0.110 MHz/hPa for the shift.

  • Superconducting sub-millimeter wave limb emission sounder SMILES
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: International Ozone Symposium.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • SMILES is a heterodyne sub-millimeter receiver which will be installed on the ELM-ES platform of the Japanese Experimental Module on the International Space Station in 2003. For the scientific side, the advantage of SIS technology is the up to five times lower system noise temperature of the receiver compared with conventional ones and therefore provides a much better resolution, both in time and space.

  • A sensitivity study on spectroscopic parameter accuracies for a mm/sub-mm limb sounder instrument
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Molecular Spectroscopy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-2852 .- 1096-083X. ; 229:2, s. 266-275
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to perform a detailed error analysis for a mm/sub-mm limb sounding instrument with respect to spectroscopic parameters. This is done in order to give some insight into the most crucial spectroscopic parameters and to work out a list of recommendations for measurements that would yield the largest possible benefit for an accurate retrieval. The investigations cover a variety of spectroscopic line parameters, such as line intensity, line position, air and self broadening parameters and their temperature exponents, and pressure shift. The retrieval process is performed with the optimal estimation method (OEM). The OEM allows one to perform an assessment of the total statistical error, as well as of the model parameter error, such as the error coming from spectroscopic parameters. The instrument parameters assumed are those of the MASTER instrument studied by the European Space Agency, one of the candidate instruments for a future atmospheric chemistry mission. However, the same principle and method of analysis can be applied to any other millimeter/sub-millimeter limb sounding instrument, for instance the Japanese instrument JEM/SMILES, the Swedish instrument Odin, and the Earth Observing System Microwave Limb Sounder. We find that an uncertainty in the intensity of the strong lines give an error of similar magnitude on the retrieved species to which the lines belong. Uncertainties in the line position have overall a small impact on the retrieval, indicating that the line positions are known with sufficient accuracy. The air broadening parameters and their temperature exponents of a few strong lines dominate the error budget. On the other hand, the self broadening parameters and the pressure shifts are found to have a rather small impact on the retrieval.

  • Partition function data and impact on retrieval quality for an mm/sub-mm limb sounder
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-4073 .- 1879-1352. ; 90:2, s. 217-238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The partition function plays a major role as it mainly governs the dependence of the spectral line strength (or line intensity) on the temperature. A wrong partition function will lead to an incorrect line strength, which will lead to a systematic error in the retrieval. Therefore, a careful investigation of the available partition function data and the sensitivity of the retrieval to this is required. Two partition function data sets, the HITRAN and the JPL, are considered in this paper. In a first step, we investigate the spread of the partition function ratios from the simple approximation values given by theory. We find that the HITRAN partition functions are usually higher than the values quoted by the simple approximation. The JPL partition functions are much closer to the values given by the approximation. Comparing directly the two datasets, with some exceptions, a good agreement is found. Only for 16 molecules (from 66 considered molecules), the deviations in the two data sets are larger than 2%. The retrieval error analysis shows that, for the case of the molecular species with strong signatures, an uncertainty in the partition function is directly translated into a retrieval error of the species in question. However, the uncertainty in the partition function of this species can have a high impact on the quality of weak species retrieval.
