  • Effects on neonatal exposure to the flame retardant tetrabrombisphenol-A, aluminum diethylphosphinate or zinc stannate on long-term, potentiation and synaptic protein levels in mice
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Archives of Toxicology. - : Springer Nature. - 0340-5761 .- 1432-0738. ; 89:12, s. 2345-2354
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Brominated flame retardants such as tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) may exert (developmental) neurotoxic effects. However, data on (neuro)toxicity of halogen-free flame retardants (HFFRs) are scarce. Recent in vitro studies indicated a high neurotoxic potential for some HFFRs, e.g., zinc stannate (ZS), whereas the neurotoxic potential of other HFFRs, such as aluminum diethylphosphinate (Alpi), appears low. However, the in vivo (neuro)toxicity of these compounds is largely unknown. We therefore investigated effects of neonatal exposure to TBBPA, Alpi or ZS on synaptic plasticity in mouse hippocampus. Male C57bl/6 mice received a single oral dose of 211 µmol/kg bw TBBPA, Alpi or ZS on postnatal day (PND) 10. On PND 17–19, effects on hippocampal synaptic plasticity were investigated using ex vivo extracellular field recordings. Additionally, we measured levels of postsynaptic proteins involved in long-term potentiation (LTP) as well as flame retardant concentrations in brain, muscle and liver tissues. All three flame retardants induced minor, but insignificant, effects on LTP. Additionally, TBBPA induced a minor decrease in post-tetanic potentiation. Despite these minor effects, expression of selected synaptic proteins involved in LTP was not affected. The flame retardants could not be measured in significant amounts in the brains, suggesting low bioavailability and/or rapid elimination/metabolism. We therefore conclude that a single neonatal exposure on PND 10 to TBBPA, Alpi or ZS does affect neurodevelopment and synaptic plasticity only to a small extent in mice. Additional data, in particular on persistence, bioaccumulation and (in vivo) toxicity, following prolonged (developmental) exposure are required for further (human) risk assessment.

  • Parametrization of acoustic images for the detection of human presence by mobile platforms
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: ICASSP, IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing - Proceedings. - 1520-6149. - 9781424442966 ; , s. 3538-3541
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • We address the problem of human detection with mobile platforms such as robots. Instead of using an optical system, we propose to employ an acoustic 2D array to reliably obtain an image of a human in a 3D spatial power spectrum which is independent of lighting conditions and uses cheap acoustic sensors. We show that humans have a distinct acoustic signature and propose to model the echoes from reflecting parts of objects in the scene by a Gaussian-Mixture- Model. When it is fitted to the acoustic image, we can extract geometric relations between the present echoes and represent the acoustic signatures in a low-dimensional parameter space. We present results based on real data measurements that demonstrate that different objects can be reconstructed from the data and discriminated. The obtained parameter space forms the basis for subsequent detection and classification of humans. ©2010 IEEE.

  • Self-regulated learning and learning analytics in online learning environments : A review of empirical research
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings LAK '20: 10th International Conference on Learning Analytics and Knowledge. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ; , s. 524-533
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Self-regulated learning (SRL) can predict academic performance. Yet, it is difficult for learners. The ability to self-regulate learning becomes even more important in emerging online learning settings. To support learners in developing their SRL, learning analytics (LA), which can improve learning practice by transforming the ways we support learning, is critical. This scoping review is based on the analysis of 54 papers on LA empirical research for SRL in online learning contexts published between 2011 and 2019. The research question is: What is the current state of the applications of learning analytics to measure and support students'SRL in online learning environments? The focus is on SRL phases, methods, forms of SRL support, evidence for LA and types of online learning settings. Zimmerman's model (2002) was used to examine SRL phases. The evidence about LA was examined in relation to four propositions: whether LA i) improve learning outcomes, ii) improve learning support and teaching, iii) are deployed widely, and iv) used ethically. Results showed most studies focused on SRL parts from the forethought and performance phase but much less focus on reflection. We found little evidence for LA that showed i) improvements in learning outcomes (20%), ii) improvements in learning support and teaching (22%). LA was also found iii) not used widely and iv) few studies (15%) approached research ethically. Overall, the findings show LA research was conducted mainly to measure rather than to support SRL. Thus, there is a critical need to exploit the LA support mechanisms further in order to ultimately use them to foster student SRL in online learning environments.

  • Interactions between Health and the Sustainable Development Goals: The Case of the Democratic Republic of Congo
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: SUSTAINABILITY. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 15:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A systematic and contextualized assessment of the interactions between the Sustainable Development Goals and health in the Democratic Republic of Congo is currently lacking. This study aimed to characterize and classify the linkages between the Sustainable Development Goals in the DRC with a focus on health and well-being. In this semi-qualitative participatory study, 35 experts assessed 240 interactions between 16 of the 17 SDGs during a two-day workshop in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, using a scale from +3 (strongly promoting) to −3 (strongly restricting). SDG 16 (Peace, justice, and strong institutions) had the strongest promoting influence on other goals and was identified as a key priority for the DRC to attain the SDGs. Progress on SDG 3 (good health and well-being) was perceived as promoting progress on most SDGs, and through second-order interactions, a positive feedback loop was identified. Furthermore, progress on the other SDGs was deemed to promote progress on SDG 3, with SDG 16 having the greatest positive potential when second-order interactions were taken into account. Our results show the importance of recognizing synergies and trade-offs concerning the interactions between health and other SDGs and that it is imperative to set up structures bringing together different sectors to accelerate work towards achieving the 2030 Agenda.

  • CLEAN technique in strip-map SAR for high-quality imaging
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IEEE Aerospace Conference Proceedings. - 1095-323X. - 9781424426225 ; , s. Art. no. 4839474-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The maximum obtainable resolution of a strip-map synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system can be retained by simply avoiding weighting, or tapering, data samples in the along-track compression process. However, this will lead to hazardous artifacts caused by strong sidelobes of the corresponding adjacent scatterers whose interference might severely weaken the desired targets or even introduce false targets. On the other hand, some residual artifacts, even after tapering process, may still deteriorate the quality (contrast) of the SAR image. These issues can be remedied by applying the so-called CLEAN technique, which can mitigate these ill-effects in strip-map SAR imagery while maintaining the maximum resolution. This, indeed, is carried out as a post processing step, i.e., after the azimuth compression is accomplished, in the SAR system. The objective of this paper is to extend the CLEAN technique to strip-map SAR system to produce high-quality images with a very good along-track resolution. The algorithm is then applied to data from a ground-based circular SAR (CSAR) system to verify its implementation as well as this new application of the CLEAN technique.

  • RELAX-based autofocus algorithm for high-resolution strip-map SAR
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IEEE National Radar Conference - Proceedings. - 1097-5659. - 9781424428717 ; , s. 1 - 6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses the non-iterative quality phase gradient autofocus (QPGA) technique which was originally proposed to remove one-dimensional phase errors in spotlight-mode synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. By enriching the source pool, the method is modified in a way suitable for autofocus in stripmap-mode SAR system with the advantage of being independent of any priori assumptions. Unlike the QPGA the potential candidates, i.e., dominant scatterers located along azimuth in each specific range bin, are automatically selected by exploiting the one-dimensional RELAX algorithm. Furthermore, RELAX is capable of estimating the size of blur window which is, in fact, associated with the Doppler spread of signal spectrum. The corresponding model includes four parameters i.e., complex amplitude, delay, Doppler center and spectral width. The proposed method has been applied to data extracted by a ground-based rotating coherent Doppler radar operating in strip-mapping mode SAR, with the aim of high-resolution clutter detection.
