  • Evaluation of growth performance and intestinal barrier function in Arctic Charr (Salvelinus alpinus) fed yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), fungi (Rhizopus oryzae) and blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Aquaculture Nutrition. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1353-5773 .- 1365-2095. ; 22:6, s. 1348-1360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) were fed for 99 days on experimental diets with 40% of fish meal replaced, on a crude protein basis, with intact yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) (ISC), extracted yeast (ESC), Rhizopus oryzae fungus (RHO) or de-shelled blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) (MYE). The fish were evaluated for growth performance, nutrient digestibility and fish intestinal function. Growth performance, retention of crude protein and sum of amino acids were not affected in fish fed diets ISC or MYE compared with those fed the reference (REF) diet. However, fish fed diet ISC displayed decreased digestibility of crude protein and indispensable amino acids and decreased intestinal barrier function compared with fish fed the REF diet. Fish fed diet ESC exhibited decreased growth performance and protein retention, but had comparable digestibility to fish fed the REF diet. Fish fed diets MYE and RHO showed similar performance in terms of growth, nutrient digestibility and intestinal barrier function. Overall, the results indicated that blue mussel and intact S. cerevisiae yeast are promising protein sources for Arctic charr.

  • Growth performance, nutrient digestibility and intestinal morphology of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed graded levels of the yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Wickerhamomyces anomalus
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Aquaculture Nutrition. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1353-5773 .- 1365-2095. ; 26:2, s. 275-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a 10-week study, we evaluated the effects of replacing 20%, 40% or 60% of fishmeal (present in control diet at 300 g/kg) on a digestible protein basis with yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae or a yeast mixture of Wickerhamomyces anomalus and S. cerevisiae on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, nutrient retention and intestinal health of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Triplicate tanks with 35 rainbow trout (144.7 +/- 25.1 g mean +/- SEM) were fed rations of 1.5% of total biomass per tank. Replacement of 60% of fishmeal with yeast mixture resulted in lower specific growth rate of 1.0% versus 1.2%/day for other diets. Apparent digestibility coefficients for crude protein and most amino acids were highest in fish fed fishmeal-based diet, with similar values for fish fed the diet with 20% replacement with yeast mixture. Diet with 20% replacement with yeast mixture resulted in highest phosphorus digestibility. Replacement of 60% of fishmeal with S. cerevisiae resulted in oedematous mucosal fold tips in the proximal intestine. The results of this study suggest that these yeasts can replace up to 40% of fishmeal under current inclusion levels in diets for rainbow trout without compromising growth performance, nutrient digestibility or intestinal health.

  • A Volumetric Pitzer Model for Aqueous Solutions of Zinc Sulfate up to Near-Saturation Concentrations at Temperatures from 293.15 to 393.15 K and Pressures up to 10 MPa
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data. - : American Chemical Society. - 0021-9568 .- 1520-5134. ; 66:1, s. 58-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Literature data for the volumetric properties of aqueous solutions of zinc sulfate have been compiled and compared with extensive recently available measurements. A semi-empirical Pitzer model has been derived from these data that reproduces the apparent molar volumes and compressibilities of zinc sulfate solutions with good accuracy to near-saturation concentrations (m 3.0 mol·kg-1) over the temperature range 293.15 ≤ T/K ≤ 393.15 and at pressures up to 10 MPa, using standard volumes, V°, obtained by additivity of ionic values from the literature. By including the dependence of V° on the compressibility of pure water, the model was able to predict apparent molar volumes with good accuracy even up to 100 MPa at 298 K. Of potential use for engineering applications, imposition of the inequality (-2Vφ/-T2)p,m < 0 to the Pitzer model has created the possibility of physically reasonable extrapolations to temperatures well beyond the parameterization range. © 2020 American Chemical Society.

  • Volumetric Properties of Aqueous Solutions of Zinc Sulfate at Temperatures from 298.15 to 393.15 K and Pressures up to 10 MPa
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data. - : American Chemical Society. - 0021-9568 .- 1520-5134. ; 66:1, s. 45-57
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Densities of aqueous solutions of zinc sulfate at molalities ranging from 0.1 to 3.0 mol·kg-1 were measured with a commercial vibrating tube densimeter at temperatures from 298.15 to 393.15 K and at pressures up to 10 MPa. Comparison between the present values and literature data showed a good agreement in general; however, a direct comparison could be made only at 298.15 K. Isothermal compressibilities derived from the density measurements as a function of pressure also compared favorably with literature values based on speed-of-sound measurements. ©
