  • Extreme Hot Weather Has Stronger Impacts on Avian Reproduction in Forests Than in Cities
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2296-701X. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change and urbanisation are among the most salient human-induced changes affecting Earth’s biota. Extreme weather events can have high biological impacts and are becoming more frequent recently. In cities, the urban heat island can amplify the intensity and frequency of hot weather events. However, the joint effects of heat events and urban microclimate on wildlife are unclear, as urban populations may either suffer more from increased heat stress or may adapt to tolerate warmer temperatures. Here, we test whether the effects of hot weather on reproductive success of great tits (Parus major) are exacerbated or dampened in urban environments compared to forest habitats. By studying 760 broods from two urban and two forest populations over 6 years, we show that 14–16 days-old nestlings have smaller body mass and tarsus length, and suffer increased mortality when they experience a higher number of hot days during the nestling period. The negative effects of hot weather on body mass and survival are significantly stronger in forests than in urban areas, where these effects are dampened or even reversed. These results suggest that urban nestlings are less vulnerable to extreme hot weather conditions than their non-urban conspecifics. This difference might be the result of adaptations that facilitate heat dissipation, including smaller body size, altered plumage and reduced brood size. Alternatively or additionally, parental provisioning and food availability may be less affected by heat in urban areas. Our findings suggest that adaptation to heat stress may help birds cope with the joint challenges of climate change and urbanisation.

  • PARSEME Corpus Release 1.3
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 19th Workshop on Multiword Expressions (MWE 2023). - Stroudsburg : Association for Computational Linguistics. - 9781959429593 ; , s. 24-35
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present version 1.3 of the PARSEME multilingual corpus annotated with verbal multiword expressions. Since the previous version, new languages have joined the undertaking of creating such a resource, some of the already existing corpora have been enriched with new annotated texts, while others have been enhanced in various ways. The PARSEME multilingual corpus represents 26 languages now. All monolingual corpora therein use Universal Dependencies v.2 tagset. They are (re-)split observing the PARSEME v.1.2 standard, which puts impact on unseen VMWEs. With the current iteration, the corpus release process has been detached from shared tasks; instead, a process for continuous improvement and systematic releases has been introduced.

  • Overview of the SPMRL 2013 Shared Task : A Cross-Framework Evaluation of Parsing Morphologically Rich Languages
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Fourth Workshop on Statistical Parsing of Morphologically Rich Languages. - : Association for Computational Linguistics. - 9781937284978 ; , s. 146-182
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper reports on the first shared task on statistical parsing of morphologically rich languages (MRLs). The task features data sets from nine languages, each available both in constituency and dependency annotation. We report on the preparation of the data sets, on the proposed parsing scenarios, and on the evaluation metrics for parsing MRLs given different representation types. We present and analyze parsing results obtained by the task participants, and then provide an analysis and comparison of the parsers across languages and frameworks, reported for gold input as well as more realistic parsing scenarios.

  • Semantic Processing of a Hungarian Ethnographic Corpus
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 1st International AMICUS Workshop, October 21, 2010, Vienna, Austria. - : University of Szeged. - 9789633060698 ; , s. 112-115
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this poster, a Hungarian ethnographic database containing linguistic annotation is presented. The corpus contains texts from three domains, namely, folk beliefs, t altos texts and tales. All the possible morphosyntactic analyses assigned to each word and the appropriate one selected from them (based on contextual information) are also marked. Syntactic (dependency) annotation is added semi-automatically to the corpus texts at a second phase of the processing. With the help of these enriched linguistic attributes, the texts can be semantically analyzed and clustered. The research and development team is working on a semantic search tool enabling to browse the texts on the basis of their semantic meaning. The proposed technology may result in a new approach to the ethnographic research and may open a new type of access to the databases.
