  • Discovery of drug–omics associations in type 2 diabetes with generative deep-learning models
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Biotechnology. - : Springer Nature. - 1087-0156 .- 1546-1696. ; 41:3, s. 399-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The application of multiple omics technologies in biomedical cohorts has the potential to reveal patient-level disease characteristics and individualized response to treatment. However, the scale and heterogeneous nature of multi-modal data makes integration and inference a non-trivial task. We developed a deep-learning-based framework, multi-omics variational autoencoders (MOVE), to integrate such data and applied it to a cohort of 789 people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes with deep multi-omics phenotyping from the DIRECT consortium. Using in silico perturbations, we identified drug–omics associations across the multi-modal datasets for the 20 most prevalent drugs given to people with type 2 diabetes with substantially higher sensitivity than univariate statistical tests. From these, we among others, identified novel associations between metformin and the gut microbiota as well as opposite molecular responses for the two statins, simvastatin and atorvastatin. We used the associations to quantify drug–drug similarities, assess the degree of polypharmacy and conclude that drug effects are distributed across the multi-omics modalities.

  • "Only to the benefit of some private persons" : The concept of "private" in records from the Swedish estates assembly, 1521-1731
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Private/Public in 18th-Century Scandinavia. - 9781350224896
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article I explore the different and changing meanings of the concept “privat” in records from the Swedish Riksdag (state assembly) from the sixteenth to the beginning of the eighteenth century. I analyze how the concept was used in different contexts, such as questions concerning e.g. private and public religious practices, relations between individuals and communities, and relations between households and the common good. More specifically I analyze the concept of private in relation to and, as was often the case, in opposition to public welfare and the common good; private in relation to secrecy; and, finally, the often ambiguous use of the word “privat” in religious contexts, where it could be used both to describe dangerous and potentially heretic practices, and as something desirable, and even necessary, for a good Christian.

  • Social ordering and the doctrine of free choice. The case of abjuration sub pena nubendi
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Law and Power in the Middle Ages. Proceedings of the fourth Carlsberg Academy on Medieval Legal History 2007. - 9788757418842 ; , s. 43-51
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the most important aspects of the marriage legislation in medieval canon law is the doctrine of free choice. According to this doctrine, established by pope Alexander III in the second half of the twelfth century, the validity of a marriage depended solely on the freely given consent of the parties. No one could legally force a couple to marry if they did not freely consent to do so. In parallel, any kind of sexual relations outside of marriage was prohibited by Canon Law. The most common penalty for illicit sexual relations was fines. In the case of stable relationships it was also quite common that the couple was forced to abjure one another under a sum of money. An unmarried couple could, however, also be requested to abjure one another sub pena nubendi. Abjuration sub pena nubendi meant that any future intercourse, or even its suspicion, would automatically leave a couple legally married. Abjuration sub pena nubendi developed as a means to stop illicit sexual relationships by transforming them into legal marriages. This practise was however contrary to one of the most fundamental principles of the marriage legislation in medieval Canon Law: the doctrine of free choice. In this paper I study the conflict between the idea of marriage as solely depending on free consent and the marriage coercion imposed by abjuration sub pena nubendi.

  • Law and the christian tradition in Scandinavia : The writings of great nordic jurists
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This book presents a comprehensive history of law and religion in the Nordic context. The entwinement of law and religion in Scandinavia encompasses an unusual history, not widely known yet important for its impact on contemporary political and international relations in the region. The volume provides a holistic picture from the first written legal sources of the twelfth century to the law of the present secular welfare states. It recounts this history through biographical case studies. Taking the point of view of major influential figures in church, politics, university, and law, it thus presents the principal actors who served as catalysts in ecclesiastical and secular law through the centuries. This refreshing approach to legal history contributes to a new trend in historiography, particularly articulated by a younger generation of experienced Nordic scholars whose work is featured prominently in this volume. The collection will be a valuable resource for academics and researchers working in the areas of Legal History and Law and Religion.
