    • The second manual on indications for and performance of echocardiography focusses on specific echocardiographic modalities and special problems in several patient cohorts. Practical aspects are discussed with priority. Established echocardiographic modalities are transesophageal, stress and contrast echocardiography. Modern technologies, such as 3D echocardiography and deformation imaging play an important role in nearly all scenarios of clinical echocardiography. This complete echocardiographic spectrum is incorporated into emergency and intensive care medicine, monitoring interventions of structural heart diseases, cardiac surgery, patients with cardiac assist devices, adult patients with congenital heart diseases and the care of highly infectious patients in pandemics. The diagnostic procedures of conventional and modern echocardiography are highlighted in this manual. The use of 3D echocardiography to characterize cardiac morphology and the application of deformation imaging to objectify cardiac function are already established in clinical practice. Stress echocardiography to detect myocardial ischemia and viability or to diagnose valvular heart diseases, assessment of coronary flow reserve to analyze myocardial perfusion and contrast echocardiography for left ventricular opacification and tumor characterization are increasingly being used to improve diagnostics. As mentioned for conventional echocardiography in the last manual of echocardiography in 2009, the modern features in echocardiography require standardized documentation and acquisition of certain images with optimized ultrasound settings, because conclusive and reproducible data analysis can only be performed if the image quality is sufficient.

  • Nonstandard Errors
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: JOURNAL OF FINANCE. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0022-1082 .- 1540-6261. ; 79:3, s. 2339-2390

    • In statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data-generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty-nonstandard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for more reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer-review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants.

  • A remarkable Amgan (Middle Cambrian, Stage 5) fauna from the Sauk Tanga, Madygen region, Kyrgyzstan
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of Geosciences. - : Czech Geological Survey. - 1214-1119 .- 1802-8225. ; 89:2, s. 375-400
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early Middle Cambrian bituminous coquinoid limestones from a tectonically isolated outcrop in southwestern Kyrgyzstan yield a remarkably diverse fauna, with stem-group cnidarians, trilobites, rhynchonelliformean brachiopods, and other shelly fossils. The fossil site is in the northern foothills of the Turkestan Range and thus forms part of the westernmost extension of the South Tien Shan. The fauna includes two fairly well known trilobite species, Glabrella ventrosa Lermontova, 1940 and Dorypyge richthofeniformis Lermontova, 1940, that provide confident support for an Amgan age of the rocks. New described taxa include the stem-group cnidarian Cambroctoconus kyrgyzstanicus Peel sp. nov., the trilobite Olenoides sagittatus Geyer sp. nov., and the helcionelloid Manasoconus bifrons Peel gen. et sp. nov. Additional fossils within the samples include the trilobites Olenoides sp. A, Kootenia sp., and Pseudoeteraspis? sp.; the rhynchonelliform brachiopods Narynella cf. ferganensis (Andreeva, 1962), Narynella? sp., Austrohedra? sp. nov., and two species of uncertain generic affinity; the tommotiid Tesella sp.; the hyolithelminth Hyolithellus sp.; and the palaeoscolecid Hadimopanella oezgueli Gedik, 1977. Of particular interest is Cambroctoconus kyrgyzstanicus with an octagonal corallum and a sparsely septate calyx.

  • Manual on indications and performance of echocardiography-Update 2020 of the German Cardiac Society
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: KARDIOLOGE. - : SPRINGER HEIDELBERG. - 1864-9718 .- 1864-9726. ; 14:5, s. 396-431
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The new manual on indications for and performance of echocardiography focuses primarily on the transthoracic echocardiographic approach. The performance of a standardized documentation in transthoracic echocardiography includes the acquisition of several cineloops and Doppler spectra with consecutive measurements illustrated by figures and a scheme of an echocardiographic report. The extended documentation in transthoracic echocardiography is presented with respect to specific pathological alterations of the heart. This includes alterations of the left ventricular wall thickness, the global and regional reduction of left ventricular function, diastolic dysfunction with normal left ventricular systolic function, pressure and volume overload of the right ventricle and the reduction of right ventricular function and pathological alterations of the heart valves. Echocardiography performed in the presence of aortic valve stenosis and regurgitation, mitral valve stenosis and regurgitation, tricuspid valve regurgitation as well as less common heart valve diseases and endocarditis is presented in special sections. The manual ends with sections describing additional echocardiographic modalities, the reporting and the use of emergency echocardiography.

  • The Tetrapod Ichnogenus Protochirotherium Fichter and Kunz 2004, a Characteristic Early Triassic Morphotype of Central Pangea
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Ichnos. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1042-0940 .- 1563-5236. ; 20:1, s. 24-30
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early Triassic chirotherian footprint assemblages from Poland, Germany, and Morocco are important for understanding archosaur evolution in the aftermath of the Permian-Triassic crisis. However, their ichnotaxonomy is confusing because various authors have interpreted their diversity differently. After an analysis and ichnotaxonomic re-assessment, the presence of the ichnogenera Brachychirotherium, Isochirotherium, and Chirotherium in these assemblages is not supported. Distant similarities with these ichnotaxa are functions of extra morphological variation and substrate-related factors. Instead, Early Triassic chirotherian footprints described under these names are assigned here to the ichnogenus Protochirotherium and to a more slender morphotype identified as Synaptichnium. In particular, Protochirotherium appears to be more widely distributed in central Pangea as a characteristic morphotype reflecting a distinct stage in archosaur evolution. Trackmakers were nonarchosaurian archosauriforms or, alternatively, stem-group crocodylians. Morphologically and temporally these footprints match the hypothetical ancestor of the Chirotherium barthii trackmaker. Chirotherium barthii appears by the beginning of the Middle Triassic. Because of its restricted stratigraphic range, and its wider distribution in central Pangea, Protochirotherium also has biostratigraphic significance for this region and can be considered as an indicator of Early Triassic-aged strata.

  • Developments in the MPI-M Earth System Model version 1.2 (MPI-ESM1.2) and Its Response to Increasing CO2
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems. - 1942-2466. ; 11:4, s. 998-1038
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new release of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology Earth System Model version 1.2 (MPI-ESM1.2) is presented. The development focused on correcting errors in and improving the physical processes representation, as well as improving the computational performance, versatility, and overall user friendliness. In addition to new radiation and aerosol parameterizations of the atmosphere, several relatively large, but partly compensating, coding errors in the model's cloud, convection, and turbulence parameterizations were corrected. The representation of land processes was refined by introducing a multilayer soil hydrology scheme, extending the land biogeochemistry to include the nitrogen cycle, replacing the soil and litter decomposition model and improving the representation of wildfires. The ocean biogeochemistry now represents cyanobacteria prognostically in order to capture the response of nitrogen fixation to changing climate conditions and further includes improved detritus settling and numerous other refinements. As something new, in addition to limiting drift and minimizing certain biases, the instrumental record warming was explicitly taken into account during the tuning process. To this end, a very high climate sensitivity of around 7 K caused by low-level clouds in the tropics as found in an intermediate model version was addressed, as it was not deemed possible to match observed warming otherwise. As a result, the model has a climate sensitivity to a doubling of CO2 over preindustrial conditions of 2.77 K, maintaining the previously identified highly nonlinear global mean response to increasing CO2 forcing, which nonetheless can be represented by a simple two-layer model.

  • Morphologic and molecular data help adopting the insect-pathogenic nephridiophagids (Nephridiophagidae) among the early diverging fungal lineages, close to the Chytridiomycota
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: MycoKeys. - : Pensoft Publishers. - 1314-4057 .- 1314-4049. ; 25, s. 31-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nephridiophagids are poorly known unicellular eukaryotes, previously of uncertain systematic position, that parasitize the Malpighian tubules of insects. Their life cycle includes merogony with multinucleate plasmodia and sporogony leading to small, uninucleate spores. We examined the phylogenetic affiliations of three species of Nephridiophaga, including one new species, Nephridiophaga maderae, from the Madeira cockroach (Leucophaea maderae). In addition to the specific host, the new species differs from those already known by the size of the spores and by the number of spores within the sporogenic plasmodium. The inferred phylogenetic analyses strongly support a placement of the nephridiophagids in the fungal kingdom near its root and with a close, but unresolved, relationship to the chytids (Chytridiomycota). We found evidence for the nephridiophagidean speciation as being strongly coupled to host speciation.
