  • First ground-based measurement of sub-20 GeV to 100 GeV gamma-Rays from the Vela pulsar with HESS II

    • Aims. We report on the measurement and investigation of pulsed high-energy y-ray emission from the Vela pulsar, PSR B0833-45, based on observations with the largest telescope of H.E.S.S., CT5, in monoscopic mode, and on data obtained with the Fermi-LAT. Methods. Data from 40.3 h of observations carried out with the H.E.S.S. II array from 2013 to 2015 have been used. A dedicated very low-threshold event reconstruction and analysis pipeline was developed to achieve the lowest possible energy threshold. Eight years of Fermi-LAT data were analysed and also used as reference to validate the CT5 telescope response model and analysis methods. Results. A pulsed gamma-ray signal at a significance level of more than 15 sigma is detected from the P2 peak of the Vela pulsar light curve. Of a total of 15 835 events, more than 6000 lie at an energy below 20 GeV, implying a significant overlap between H.E.S.S. II-CT5 and the Fermi-LAT. While the investigation of the pulsar light curve with the LAT confirms characteristics previously known up to 20 GeV in the tens of GeV energy range, CT5 data show a change in the pulse morphology of P2, i.e. an extreme sharpening of its trailing edge, together with the possible onset of a new component at 3.4 sigma significance level. Assuming a power-law model for the P2 spectrum, an excellent agreement is found for the photon indices (Gamma similar or equal to 4.1) obtained with the two telescopes above 10 GeV and an upper bound of 8% is derived on the relative offset between their energy scales. Using data from both instruments, it is shown however that the spectrum of P2 in the 10-100 GeV has a pronounced curvature; this is a confirmation of the sub-exponential cut-off form found at lower energies with the LAT. This is further supported by weak evidence of an emission above 100 GeV obtained with CT5. In contrast, converging indications are found from both CT5 and LAT data for the emergence of a hard component above 50 GeV in the leading wing (LW2) of P2, which possibly extends beyond 100 GeV. Conclusions. The detection demonstrates the performance and understanding of CT5 from 100 GeV down to the sub-20 GeV domain, i.e. unprecedented low energy for ground-based gamma-ray astronomy. The extreme sharpening of the trailing edge of the P2 peak found in the H.E.S.S. II light curve of the Vela pulsar and the possible extension beyond 100 GeV of at least one of its features, LW2, provide further constraints to models of gamma-Ray emission from pulsars.

  • DISCOVERY OF HIGH-ENERGY GAMMA-RAY EMISSION FROM THE BINARY SYSTEM PSR B1259-63/LS 2883 AROUND PERIASTRON WITH FERMI

    • We report on the discovery of >= 100 MeV gamma-rays from the binary system PSR B1259-63/LS 2883 using the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board Fermi. The system comprises a radio pulsar in orbit around a Be star. We report on LAT observations from near apastron to similar to 128 days after the time of periastron, t(p), on 2010 December 15. No gamma-ray emission was detected from this source when it was far from periastron. Faint gamma-ray emission appeared as the pulsar approached periastron. At similar to t(p) + 30 days, the >= 100 MeV gamma-ray flux increased over a period of a few days to a peak flux 20-30 times that seen during the pre-periastron period, but with a softer spectrum. For the following month, it was seen to be variable on daily timescales, but remained at similar to(1-4) x 10(-6) cm(-2) s(-1) before starting to fade at similar to t(p) + 57 days. The total gamma-ray luminosity observed during this period is comparable to the spin-down power of the pulsar. Simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of the source showed no corresponding dramatic changes in radio and X-ray flux between the pre-periastron and post-periastron flares. We discuss possible explanations for the observed gamma-ray-only flaring of the source.

    • This catalog summarizes 117 high-confidence ≥0.1 GeV gamma-ray pulsar detections using three years of data acquired by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on the Fermi satellite. Half are neutron stars discovered using LAT data through periodicity searches in gamma-ray and radio data around LAT unassociated source positions. The 117 pulsars are evenly divided into three groups: millisecond pulsars, young radio-loud pulsars, and young radio-quiet pulsars. We characterize the pulse profiles and energy spectra and derive luminosities when distance information exists. Spectral analysis of the off-peak phase intervals indicates probable pulsar wind nebula emission for four pulsars, and off-peak magnetospheric emission for several young and millisecond pulsars. We compare the gamma-ray properties with those in the radio, optical, and X-ray bands. We provide flux limits for pulsars with no observed gamma-ray emission, highlighting a small number of gamma-faint, radio-loud pulsars. The large, varied gamma-ray pulsar sample constrains emission models. Fermi's selection biases complement those of radio surveys, enhancing comparisons with predicted population distributions.

  • Discovery of a radiation component from the Vela pulsar reaching 20 teraelectronvolts

    • Gamma-ray observations have established energetic isolated pulsars as outstanding particle accelerators and antimatter factories. However, many questions are still open regarding the acceleration and radiation processes involved, as well as the locations where they occur. The radiation spectra of all gamma-ray pulsars observed to date show strong cutoffs or a break above energies of a few gigaelectronvolts. Using the High Energy Stereoscopic System's Cherenkov telescopes, we discovered a radiation component from the Vela pulsar which emerges beyond this generic cutoff and extends up to energies of at least 20 teraelectronvolts. This is an order of magnitude larger than in the case of the Crab pulsar, the only other pulsar detected in the teraelectronvolt energy range. Our results challenge the state-of-the-art models for the high-energy emission of pulsars. Furthermore, they pave the way for investigating other pulsars through their multiteraelectronvolt emission, thereby imposing additional constraints on the acceleration and emission processes in their extreme energy limit. The H.E.S.S. gamma-ray observatory has observed gamma rays with energies of at least 20 TeV from a pulsar, an energy regime that is hard to reconcile with the existing theories of gamma-ray production for such objects.

  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density

    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

    • Background & ObjectivesThis study is part of a series of projects arising from an academic stakeholder partnership (ASP) to facilitate the identification and translation of credible research to support and sustain safe, psychologically healthy, inclusive and productive workplaces. Prior work identified modifiable risk factors contributing to work absence, followed by a synthesis of workplace interventions that targeted these factors based on systematic reviews published between 2000 – 2012. This knowledge synthesis and translation project updates these findings with a specific focus on workplace interventions targeting psychological health and organizational culture. All projects in this series is associated with the content population of the Health and Work Productivity Web-Portal.MethodsParticipatory action research approach (problem identification, problem clarification, problem resolution), the utilization of a modified PRECEDE-PROCEED Model (predisposing, enabling, reinforcing factors); snowball methodology to expand team participants; collaborative survey development, discussions, and minutes as working documents to identify high priority issues relevant to stakeholders, to create PICO and search strategy. Following literature search pairs of researchers independently reviewed titles. Work continues on review of abstracts and full papers against a set of inclusion/exclusion criteria.ResultsParticpatory methods led to creation of a revised PICO statement, refinement of keywords and changes in search parameters to better meet the needs of organizational partners. Given changes in prior search terms a new search was conducted from 2000 to present across Medline, Embase, CDSR, DARE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, TRIP, NARIC, REHAB+ resulting in identification of 5644 citations. Following duplicate removal and administrative review of titles 1046 citations remained for scientific review. Administrative removal based on removal of pharmaceutical, clinical, non-work-related titles only. In the first round of scientific review there was poor congruence of title selection which has led to the creation of checklist and guide currently being tested.ConclusionsParticipatory approaches to knowledge synthesis and its translation creates opportunities for learning for all participants. Stakeholder participation has led to a better understanding of high priority needs across different stakeholders which has led to refinement PICO, and search strategy. Discussions with stakeholders has increased awareness of the need for root cause analysis.  Preliminary results of the knowledge synthesis will be reported.

  • Planning, Implementing and Evaluating Successful Workplace Interventions for Psychologically Healthy and Productive Workplaces : A Pattern Analysis of 57 Systematic Reviews

    • Mental health in the workplace is a key topic in British Columbia, across Canada and internationally with a growing focus on the importance of creating and sustaining safe, healthy, productive and inclusive workplaces. This stakeholder-centred best evidence-based synthesis of systematic reviews searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness, CINAHL, PsycINFO, TRIP, REHABDATA (NARIC), REHAB+ (McMaster), and Health-evidence.ca (McMaster) published between January 1, 2000 and February 2016 to identify interventions that addressed: mental health symptomatology (depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.), job control, job demands, social support, stress management, and wellness (health promotion). Following deduplication 5,646 citations were reviewed by two or more independent reviewers. Following title and abstract review, 168 full text articles were reviewed against inclusion/exclusion criteria, resulting in 57 systematic reviews being included. Based on findings and trend analysis, the academic-stakeholder team proposed a framework for planning, implementing and evaluating interventions to mitigate psychosocial hazards in the workplace. Due to low quality evidence and experimental pre and post design of many studies recommendations should be considered with some caution noting the need for more rigorous monitoring of their implementation.
