  • [The medical education in Gothenburg is being reformed. Professional development, research and internationalization]
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - 0023-7205. ; 108:12, s. 669-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The medical education at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, is being reformed by an emphasis on professional development, international contacts and research. Students’ professional development consists of five core areas: Communication and self-reflection, Leadership and teamwork, Ethical attitude, Human rights and gender issues, and a Scientific and critical attitude. A learning progression of students’ professional competence is organised by five process leaders, coordinating core learning objectives and examinations within the existing curriculum. By promoting international exchange, more than half of the students in undergraduate medical education have had international contacts. The Sahlgrenska Academy aims to promote medical students’ interest for research and to increase the percentage among medical doctors that have a PhD degree. A program for combining medical education with research and teaching is being launched along with a MD/PhD program for medical basic science and a special PhD/MD program.

  • Effects of blockade of alpha- and beta-adrenoceptors and neuropeptide Y(1) receptors, as well as brachial plexus blockade, on endothelium-dependent vasodilation in the human forearm
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Clinical and experimental pharmacology & physiology. - : Wiley. - 0305-1870 .- 1440-1681. ; 29:7, s. 603-607
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 1. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of alpha-adrenoceptor blockade (phentolamine), beta-adrenoceptor blockade (propranolol), neuropeptide Y(1) receptor blockade and neurogenic blockade (brachial plexus) on endothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDV) in the human forearm. 2. Forty-four young healthy volunteers underwent forearm blood flow (FBF) measurements, using venous occlusion plethysmography, during local intra-arterial infusions of methacholine (MCh; inducing EDV) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP; inducing endothelium-independent vasodilation (EIDV)). These measurements were undertaken at baseline and were repeated with either concomitant local intra-arterial infusion of phentolamine (n = 8), propranolol (n = 7) or saline (n = 6) in the forearm, neuropeptide Y(1) receptor blockade (n = 12) given i.v. or during axillary plexus blockade (n = 11). 3. Both alpha-adrenoceptor blockade and neurogenic blockade induced an upward shift in the dose-response curve for both EDV and EIDV. beta-Adrenoceptor blockade did not change resting FBF or EIDV, but induced a significant decrease in EDV (P = 0.015). Neuropeptide Y(1) receptor blocker induced no significant changes in resting FBF, EDV and EIDV and neither did saline. No changes in blood pressure or heart rate were induced by any of the blockades. 4. Whereas beta-adrenoceptor blockade impaired EDV, alpha-adrenoceptor blockade and neurogenic blockade caused a general vasodilation that was not endothelium dependent. Neuropeptide Y does not seem to influence blood flow in the resting forearm.

  • The geographic distribution of mosquito species in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of the European Mosquito Control Association. - 2054-930X .- 1460-6127. ; 31, s. 21-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Surveillance of the actual distribution of mosquito species in Northern Europe is fundamental for evaluating risk for emerging pathogens, and for research on potential vectors. The Swedish mosquito fauna composition and geographic distribution, originally described by Professor Christine Dahl in the 1970´s, included 43 species. We have compiled the information published from 1978 to 2012, and our own surveillance data from 2001 to 2013, and compared this with the species list and geographic distribution provided in "Taxonomy and geographic distribution of Swedish Culicidae" by Dahl (1977). New species detected during these 36 years were Culiseta (Culicella) ochroptera (Peus, 1935) published 1984, Aedes (Aedes) rossicus Dolbeskin, Goritzkaja & Mitrofanova, 1930 published 1986, Anopheles (Anopheles) beklemishevi published 1986, Aedes (Ochlerotatus) euedes (Howard, Dyar & Knab, 1912) published 2001, Aedes (Ochlerotatus) nigrinus (Eckstein, 1918) first recorded in 2012, and Anopheles (Anopheles) algeriensis Theobald, 1903, first recorded in 2013. We provide maps with the distribution by province for each species, including historic information up until 1977, and new records from 1978 to 2013, showing the similarities and differences between the old and the new records. Important findings in recent years include the wide distribution of the Sindbis virus enzootic vector Culex (Culex) torrentium Martinii, 1925, and the more limited distribution of the potential West Nile virus vector Culex (Culex) pipiens Linnaeus, 1758. The updated list of mosquito species in Sweden now includes 49 species.
