  • Speech Representation in the History of English: Introduction
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Speech Representation in the History of English. - Oxford : Oxford University Press. - 9780190918064 ; , s. 1-28
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter introduces the field of speech representation research. It gives a brief overview of scholarship on speech representation and some crucial concepts in this research field. It identifies three broad core areas that have received substantial attention in previous research—mechanics of speech representation, modes of speech representation, and the sociopragmatics of speech representation—and reviews some of the studies on present-day as well as historical materials within those areas. The authors outline the chapters of this volume, highlighting their contributions to current research. Finally, the chapter suggests a possible program for future research, identifying key topics and general contexts that deserve further attention.

  • A Standardization Process in its Final Stages : Mine and Thine in A Corpus of English Dialogues 1560–1760
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of English Studies (IJES). - : Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Murcia. - 1578-7044 .- 1989-6131. ; 20:2, s. 95-116
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study concerns the development of the determiners MINE/MYand THINE/THYin the Early Modern English period. The -Nforms had essentially been ousted before words starting with consonants over the Middle English period, and over the subsequent centuries, these forms also fell intodisuse before words starting with initial vowels and h. While the rise of the N-less variants has been the object of several previous studies, the present investigation aims at accounting for the fate of the declining N-variants in the Corpus of English Dialogues 1560–1760, a data source comprising speech-related texts. We look into the chronological stages of development for the declining MINEand THINE forms, the genres that maintained these forms longest, and the speaker groups that were the last to use the forms. Comparisons are made with the results obtained in previous studies on MINE/MYand THINE/THY variation.

  • L’interaction orale du passé : A Corpus of English Dialogues 1560–1760
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Langages. - : Armand Colin. - 0458-726X .- 1958-9549. ; 217, s. 55-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The Linguistic Study of Early Modern English Speech-related Texts: How 'Bad' Can 'Bad' Data Be?
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of English Linguistics. - : SAGE Publications. - 0075-4242 .- 1552-5457. ; 31:3, s. 221-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The historical linguist has to rely on written records of a speech event for evidence regarding spoken interaction of the past. The authors consider records of trial proceedings and witness depositions, two genres that are included in A Corpus of English Dialogues 1560-1760 (currently under compilation). They present evidence both for and against the reliability of these written records as representations of past speech. The role of the scribe, as well as the printer and editor, is discussed. The authors also offer evidence to suggest that records that are contemporaneous with the speech event are preferable to later printings and editions for linguistic research. They conclude that the study of speech-related texts is of value in its own right, although these texts cannot be equated with present-day audio recordings of spoken interaction.

  • Speech Representation in the History of English : Topics and Approaches
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This volume explores the speech representation of the past, comprising in-depth analyses of how speakers and writers mark, structure, and discuss a previous speech event or fictional speech in the history of English. Focusing on the Early Modern English and the Late Modern English periods, the chapters are concerned with topics such as parentheses as markers of represented speech, the development of BE like as a reporting expression, the gradual formation of free indirect speech reporting, and the interpersonal functions of represented speech. Various social contexts and genres are covered, including witness depositions, literary texts, letters, histories, and the spoken language of the recent past. The chapters draw on historical sociolinguistics, historical pragmatics, and corpus linguistics in showing a wide array of approaches to the study of speech representation in the history of English.
