  • Teflon tech : quarantaine in the big shed : on the work of Norman Foster
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: The invisible in architecture. - London : Academy Editions, Ernst & Sohn. - 1854902857 ; , s. 412-419
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Since the Prince of Wales first entered the arena of architecture in 1984, the United Kingdom has placed at least 500,000 buildings on the list of historic buildings and ancient monuments. Half a million buildings are now legally protected from demolition or significant alterations, an unprecedented total. No country has ever taken such wide-scale and radical action to preserve its heritage as has Britain during the eighties. It is an attempt to employ official measures by government authorities to curb the destructive maelstrom of Modernism which until recently was welcomed by those same authorities with open arms. If the 'heritage industry' has anything to do with it, then from now on Britain will be preserved in aspic to become an eternal memento of bygone glory. The end of history is likely to meet little resistance here. While Britain goes further than any other country in its advanced degree of historic somnambulism, it is simultaneously home to the most avid cult of technology in architecture. England clearly still identifies itself as the founder of the machine age. The country that once unleashed the lndustrial Revolution and gave it its ideological ground rules ('Knowledge is power, time is money') can still pride itself on what Charles Jencks once called 'High Church Tech'. The buildings of such architects as Richard Rogers, Michael Hopkins, Nicholas Grimshaw and Norman Foster are recognised throughout the world as the thoroughbreds of 'High-tech' architecture. These architects prepare us for an Odyssey to the New Atlantis about which Francis Bacon once speculated. Of this illustrious company, Norman Foster is the one who has taken the technological aesthetics the furthest. Technology forms an ever recurring theme in his work and is exposed in all its beauty. He has little need of intellectual justifications. A multimillionaire, manager and aesthete is at work here. Thus Foster is our best choice when it comes to assessing the cultural impact of this 'technicist' approach.

  • Fits to non-supersymmetric SO(10) models with type I and II seesaw mechanisms using renormalization group evolution
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : SPRINGER. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We consider numerical fits to non-supersymmetric SO(10)-based models in which neutrino mass is generated by the type-I or type-II seesaw mechanism or a combination of both. The fits are performed with a sophisticated top-down procedure, taking into account the renormalization group equations of the gauge and Yukawa couplings, integrating out relevant degrees of freedom at their corresponding mass scales, and using recent data for the Standard Model observables. We find acceptable fits for normal neutrino mass ordering only and with neutrino mass generated by either type-I seesaw only or a combination of types I and II seesaw in which type-I seesaw is dominant. Furthermore, we find predictions from the best fit regarding the small neutrino masses, the effective neutrinoless double beta decay mass, and the leptonic CP-violating phase. Finally, we show that the fits are rather insensitive to the chosen value of the unification scale.

  • Sex Classification of Face Images using Embedded Prototype Subspace Classifiers.
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 31th International Conference in Central Europe on Computer Graphics, Visualization and Computer Vision WSCG 2023. - Czech Republic. ; , s. 43-52
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent academic literature Sex and Gender have both become synonyms, even though distinct definitions doexist. This give rise to the question, which of those two are actually face image classifiers identifying? It will beargued and explained why CNN based classifiers will generally identify gender, while feeding face recognitionfeature vectors into a neural network, will tend to verify sex rather than gender. It is shown for the first time howstate of the art Sex Classification can be performed using Embedded Prototype Subspace Classifiers (EPSC) andalso how the projection depth can be learned efficiently. The automatic Gender classification, which is producedby the InsightFace project, is used as a baseline and compared to the results given by the EPSC, which takes thefeature vectors produced by InsightFace as input. It turns out that the depth of projection needed is much largerfor these face feature vectors than for an example classifying on MNIST or similar. Therefore, one importantcontribution is a simple method to determine the optimal depth for any kind of data. Furthermore, it is shown howthe weights in the final layer can be set in order to make the choice of depth stable and independent of the kind oflearning data. The resulting EPSC is extremely light weight and yet very accurate, reaching over 98% accuracy forseveral datasets.

  • Robust and Invariant Phase Based Local Feature Matching
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 22nd International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR), 2014. - 9781479952083 ; , s. 809-814
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Any feature matching algorithm needs to be robust, producing few false positives but also needs to be invariant to changes in rotation, illumination and scale. Several improvements are proposed to a previously published Phase Correlation based algorithm, which operates on local disc areas, using the Log Polar Transform to sample the disc neighborhood and the FFT to obtain the phase. It will be shown that the matching can be done in the frequency domain directly, using the Chi-squared distance, instead of computing the cross power spectrum. Moreover, it will be shown how combining these methods yields an algorithm that sorts out a majority of the false positives. The need for a peak to sub lobe ratio computation in order to cope with sub pixel accuracy will be discussed as well as how the FFT of the periodic component can enhance the matching. The result is a robust local feature matcher that is able to cope with rotational, illumination and scale differences to a certain degree.

  • Developing an optical DNA mapping toolbox to identify chromosomal translocations in acute myeloid leukemia
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: 23rd International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences, MicroTAS 2019. ; , s. 626-627
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a method based on CRISPR/Cas9 technology and optical DNA mapping (ODM) for clinical diagnosis of chromosomal translocations in Acute Myeloid Leukemia. CRISPR/Cas9 is used to cut-out genomic regions of interest, which are then differentially stained, stretched inside nanochannels and imaged. Sequence-dependent intensity pattern of stretched molecules enable studying linear association of genomic regions and pinpoint structural variations. Our method can reveal DNA structural details on length-scales that are difficult to address by state-of-the-art molecular diagnostic approaches. This manuscript reports proof-of-concept results for CRISPR/Cas9 excision of a fragment in the E.coli genome and high-fidelity mapping of the human genome.
