  • Modeling China's terrestrial ecosystem gross primary productivity with BEPS model : Parameter sensitivity analysis and model calibration
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Agricultural and Forest Meteorology. - 0168-1923. ; 343
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Terrestrial ecosystems are the largest sink for carbon, and their ecosystem gross primary productivity (GPP) regulates variations in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. Current process-based ecosystem models used for estimating GPP are subject to large uncertainties due to poorly constrained parameter values. In this study, we implemented a global sensitivity analysis (GSA) on parameters in the Boreal Ecosystem Productivity Simulator (BEPS) considering the parameters’ second-order impacts. We also applied the generalized likelihood estimation (GLUE) method, which is flexible for a multi-parameter calibration, to optimize the GPP simulation by BEPS for 10 sites covering 7 plant functional types (PFT) over China. Our optimized results significantly reduced the uncertainty of the simulated GPP over all the sites by 17 % to 82 % and showed that the GPP is sensitive to not only the photosynthesis-related parameters but also the parameters related to the soil water uptake as well as to the energy balance. The optimized GPP across South China showed that the mix forest, shrub, and grass have a higher GPP and are more controlled by the soil water availability. This study showed that the GLUE method together with the GSA scheme could constrain the ecosystem model well when simulating GPP across multiple ecosystems and provide a reasonable estimate of the spatial and temporal distribution of the ecosystem GPP over China. We call for more observations from more sites, as well as data on plant traits, to be collected in China in order to better constrain ecosystem carbon cycle modeling and understand its response to climate change.

  • Redirecting configuration of atomically dispersed selenium catalytic sites for efficient hydrazine oxidation
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Matter. - 2590-2393 .- 2590-2385. ; 7:2, s. 655-667
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding the reconstruction of surface sites is crucial for gaining insights into the true active sites and catalytic mechanisms. While extensive research has been conducted on reconstruction behaviors of atomically dispersed metallic catalytic sites, limited attention has been paid to non-metallic ones despite their potential catalytic activity comparable or even superior to their noble-metal counterpart. Herein, we report a carbonaceous, atomically dispersed non-metallic selenium catalyst that displayed exceptional catalytic activity in the hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) in alkaline media, outperforming the noble-metal Pt catalysts. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed that the pristine SeC4 site pre-adsorbs an ∗OH ligand, followed by HzOR occurring on the other side of the OH–SeC4. Theoretical calculations proposed that the pre-adsorbed ∗OH group pulls electrons from the Se site, resulting in a more positively charged Se and a higher polarity of Se–C bonds, thereby enhancing surface reactivity toward HzO/R.

  • Scalable Synthesis of Photoluminescent Single-Chain Nanoparticles by Electrostatic-Mediated Intramolecular Crosslinking
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : Wiley. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 61:27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report the large-scale synthesis of photoluminescent single-chain nanoparticles (SCNPs) by electrostatic-mediated intramolecular crosslinking in a concentrated solution of 40 mg mL−1 by continuous addition of the free radical initiator. Poly(vinyl benzyl chloride) was charged by quaternization with vinyl-imidazolium for the intramolecular crosslinking by using 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMAP) as the radical initiator. Under the electrostatic repulsion thus interchain isolation, the intrachain crosslinking experiences the transition from coil through pearl-necklace to globular state. The SCNPs demonstrate strong photoluminescence in the visible range when the non-emissive units are confined thereby. Composition and microstructure of the SCNPs are tunable. The photoluminescent tadpole-like Janus SCNP can be used to selectively illuminate interfacial membranes while stabilizing the emulsions.

  • Ultrarapid Sonochemical Synthesis of ZnO Hierarchical Structures : From Fundamental Research to High Efficiencies up to 6.42% for Quasi-Solid Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Chemistry of Materials. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0897-4756 .- 1520-5002. ; 25:6, s. 1000-1012
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Zinc oxide (ZnO) hierarchical structures (HSs) have recently demonstrated notable photochemical and photovoltaic performances attributed to their nano/micro combined architectures. In this study, ZnO HSs were synthesized at room temperature using ultrarapid sonochemistry. This novel approach can effectively overcome deficiencies in the synthesis via traditional direct precipitation by promoting nucleation and accelerating diffusion. Only 15 min was needed to complete the formation of highly crystallized and uniformed HSs consisting of interconnected monocrystalline nanosheets using sonochemistry. The formation of HSs through in situ observations was interpreted using a new mechanism based on oriented attachment and reconstruction. In the nonequilibrium synthesis system, thicker, porous, and coarse crystallized ZnO sheets were first constructed via oriented attachment of small-sized nanocrystals. After reconstruction, untrathin, integrated, and monocrystalline nanosheets were obtained. According to the two-dimensional nanosheets to three-dimensional HSs, the formation was much more sophisticated because repeated and parallel heterogeneous oriented attachments with reconstructions dominated the final morphologies of the HSs. The relationships between synthetic conditions and HSs structures were established. Based on the photoanodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), the performances of these differently structured HSs were tested. HSs with densely assembled nanosheets exhibited better performances in photoelectric conversions. Systematic investigations were also carried out by selecting two representative HSs to demonstrate the critical factors governing the optical and electrical properties of photoanodes. Finally, under AM 1.5 and 100mW cm(-2) light irradiation, high photoelectric conversion efficiencies of up to 6.42% were achieved. These results established a new record for quasi-solid ZnO-based DSCs.

  • Discovery of Genetic Variation on Chromosome 5q22 Associated with Mortality in Heart Failure
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: PLoS Genetics. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1553-7390 .- 1553-7404. ; 12:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Failure of the human heart to maintain sufficient output of blood for the demands of the body, heart failure, is a common condition with high mortality even with modern therapeutic alternatives. To identify molecular determinants of mortality in patients with new-onset heart failure, we performed a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies and follow-up genotyping in independent populations. We identified and replicated an association for a genetic variant on chromosome 5q22 with 36% increased risk of death in subjects with heart failure (rs9885413, P = 2.7x10-9). We provide evidence from reporter gene assays, computational predictions and epigenomic marks that this polymorphism increases activity of an enhancer region active in multiple human tissues. The polymorphism was further reproducibly associated with a DNA methylation signature in whole blood (P = 4.5x10-40) that also associated with allergic sensitization and expression in blood of the cytokine TSLP (P = 1.1x10-4). Knockdown of the transcription factor predicted to bind the enhancer region (NHLH1) in a human cell line (HEK293) expressing NHLH1 resulted in lower TSLP expression. In addition, we observed evidence of recent positive selection acting on the risk allele in populations of African descent. Our findings provide novel genetic leads to factors that influence mortality in patients with heart failure.

  • Equilibrium of Frequency Control Ancillary Service Market Based on Attack-defense Game
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Dianwang Jishu/Power System Technology. - : Power System Technology Press. - 1000-3673. ; 48:2, s. 679-687
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the improvement of electricity market rules, the power system operator permits new energy resources to gradually participate in the frequency control ancillary service market. The participation of new energy resources greatly enhance the frequency regulation performance and mutual support of different energy resources. However, some frequency regulation resources are usually equipped with insufficient cyber security protection measures due to economic considerations. Under this situation, hackers may exploit the vulnerability of susceptible cyber physical systems to disrupt the operation of frequency control ancillary service market. Therefore, we analyze frequency modulation market game equilibrium considering the attack-defense game. First, we analyze the cyber attack behaviors aiming at manipulating the bidding information of susceptible resources. Second, we analyze the attack model aiming at maximizing the profit of the complicity. Next, a frequency modulation market equilibrium model considering the master-slave Stackelberg game of both sides of attack and defense is designed. Finally, the frequency modulation market equilibrium results based on the Column-and-Constraint Generation (C&CG) algorithm are analyzed. Through case analysis of 30-unit frequency regulation markets, the average deviation of capacity revenue change from 113.89% under attack to 12.56% after defense, indicating that the defender can to a certain extent suppress the market equilibrium deviation caused by the attacker.

  • The conversion of nanocellulose into solvent-free nanoscale liquid crystals by attaching long side-arms for multi-responsive optical materials
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry C. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2050-7526 .- 2050-7534. ; 8:32, s. 11022-11031
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanocellulose, with its unique optical and chemical properties, has received increasing attention as feedstock to fabricate sustainable materials. However, achieving a nanocellulose-based solvent-free liquid crystal with good responsiveness still remains a challenge. Herein, for the first time, solvent-free supramolecular liquid crystals were fabricated by attaching long side-arms on the fiber-like nanocellulose derived from tunicate (TCNC) with an average width of 20 nm and 400-3000 nm in length. The side-arms were grafted via surface condensation with a charged organosilane, followed by further functionalization with a counter-ion polyoxyethylene ether. The nanoscale liquid crystals consisted of the stiff TCNC as the core and flexible side-arms as the soft shells, forming the core-shell structure with an average width of 34-36 nm. The resulting solvent-free liquid crystal exhibited transparent and viscous liquid-like fluidity, as well as a bright birefringence between the crossed polarizers at room temperature. In our findings, the stiff core provided crystal-like ordering, whereas the soft shells induced the high mobility of the TCNCs as a result of the increased fractional free volume, as shown by positron annihilation lifetime spectra. The unique flowability enables the possibility of multi-responsiveness to temperature, deformation, and alternating electric fields. In addition, the thermo-responsiveness can be regulated by tailoring the canopy. This work provides a novel strategy for the conversion of solid nanocellulose into a solvent-free nanoscale liquid crystal, which is promising for use as a responsive optical material.

  • Orthostatic hypotension and novel blood pressure-associated gene variants: Genetics of Postural Hemodynamics (GPH) Consortium.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Heart Journal. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1522-9645 .- 0195-668X. ; 33:18, s. 2331-2341
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: Orthostatic hypotension (OH), an independent predictor of mortality and cardiovascular events, strongly correlates with hypertension. Recent genome-wide studies have identified new loci influencing blood pressure (BP) in populations, but their impact on OH remains unknown. Methods and resultsA total of 38 970 men and women of European ancestry from five population-based cohorts were included, of whom 2656 (6.8%) met the diagnostic criteria for OH (systolic/diastolic BP drop ≥20/10 mmHg within 3 min of standing). Thirty-one recently discovered BP-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were examined using an additive genetic model and the major allele as referent. Relations between OH, orthostatic systolic BP response, and genetic variants were assessed by inverse variance-weighted meta-analysis. We found Bonferroni adjusted (P < 0.0016) significant evidence for association between OH and the EBF1 locus (rs11953630, per-minor-allele odds ratio, 95% confidence interval: 0.90, 0.85-0.96; P = 0.001), and nominal evidence (P < 0.05) for CYP17A1 (rs11191548: 0.85, 0.75-0.95; P = 0.005), and NPR3-C5orf23 (rs1173771: 0.92, 0.87-0.98; P= 0.009) loci. Among subjects not taking BP-lowering drugs, three SNPs within the NPPA/NPPB locus were nominally associated with increased risk of OH (rs17367504: 1.13, 1.02-1.24; P = 0.02, rs198358: 1.10, 1.01-1.20; P = 0.04, and rs5068: 1.22, 1.04-1.43; P = 0.01). Moreover, an ADM variant was nominally associated with continuous orthostatic systolic BP response in the adjusted model (P= 0.04).ConclusionThe overall association between common gene variants in BP loci and OH was generally weak and the direction of effect inconsistent with resting BP findings. These results suggest that OH and resting BP share few genetic components.

  • Influence of jet flow on hydrodynamic performance of a ducted propeller
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics of Fluids. - 1070-6631 .- 1089-7666. ; 35:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study introduces a concept that jet technology in the aeronautical field is used for active flow control to improve the hydrodynamic performance of a ducted propeller. Jet flow is added in front of the ducted propeller, and it produces a circumferential velocity that is opposite to the rotation direction of the rotor. An international standard ducted propeller was adopted to demonstrate this concept. The unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes method and the shear stress transport k − ω turbulence model were employed for the simulations. The open-source platform OpenFOAM was utilized. The overall efficiency η 0 of the ducted propeller first increases and then decreases with increasing the jet flow velocity R j f from 1 to 3 and the distance L to the rotation center from 0.2 D to 0.4 D . When the jet flow is at the optimal condition of R j f = 2 and L = 0.3 D , the maximum efficiency improvement of 3.1% is achieved for the ducted propeller. The reason is that the jet flow contributes to a pressure increase in the flow through the rotor. This effect is related to tip and hub vortices, which are disrupted by the jet flow and have relatively low vorticity magnitudes compared to the reference case without jet. The findings in this study have the potential to advance the development of active flow control technology for ships.

  • Numerical investigation of the scale effects of pump-jet propulsor with a pre-swirl stator
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics of Fluids. - : AIP Publishing. - 1089-7666 .- 1070-6631. ; 35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, the performance of a pump-jet propulsor (PJP) with pre-swirl stator in open water is numerically investigated. Both full-scale and model-scale configurations are considered. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and shear stress transport ?−? turbulence model are used in the numerical calculation. The computational domain is discretized using structured grids, and a rotating grid is affixed to the rotor to deal with the relative motion between the rotor and stationary components. The mesh quality is determined based on a grid uncertainty analysis. The numerical method is validated using model-scale experimental data. The simulation results reveal the influences of the scale size on the hydrodynamic performance and the distributions of the velocity, pressure and vorticity under three advance coefficients. With the increase in the advance coefficients, the scale influences on the efficiency become more obvious, and the efficiency of the full-scale PJP is always higher than that of the model-scale PJP. The full-scale configuration is found with a more significant instability in the gap vortex development, because it presents larger interaction between tip leakage vortex (TLV) and the inner wall of the duct. As the main velocity increases, the TLV shedding is delayed. Finally, the development process of gap vortices is analyzed for the difference operation conditions.
