  • Towards 6G wireless communication networks: vision, enabling technologies, and new paradigm shifts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science China Information Sciences. - : Science Press. - 1674-733X .- 1869-1919. ; 64:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability, and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-air-ground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6 GHz, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. Clearly, 6G with additional technical requirements beyond those of 5G will enable faster and further communications to the extent that the boundary between physical and cyber worlds disappears.

  • Altered Expression of the Hedgehog Pathway Proteins BMP2, BMP4, SHH, and IHH Involved in Knee Cartilage Damage of Patients With Osteoarthritis and Kashin-Beck Disease
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Cartilage. - : Sage Publications. - 1947-6035 .- 1947-6043. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of Hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway proteins in knee articular cartilage from Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) and osteoarthritis (OA) patients.METHODS: Knee articular cartilage samples were collected from normal (N), OA, and KBD adults (aged 38-60 years) and divided into 3 groups with 6 subjects in each group. The localization of the HH pathway proteins bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2), bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4), Sonic hedgehog (SHH), and Indian hedgehog (IHH) was observed with the microscope after immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. Positive staining cell rates of each proteins were compared.RESULTS: The strongest stainings of all proteins were observed in the middle zones of all 3 groups. The positive staining rates of BMP4 and IHH were significantly lower in the OA and KBD groups than those in the N group in all 3 zones. The positive staining rates of BMP2 and SHH tend to be lower in the OA and KBD groups than those in the N group in the deep zone, while higher in the OA and KBD groups than those in the N group in superficial and middle zones.CONCLUSIONS: Altered expression of the HH pathway proteins BMP2, BMP4, SHH, and IHH was found in OA and KBD articular cartilage. There seemed to be a compensatory effect between SHH and IHH in cartilage damage. Further studies on the pathogenesis of OA and KBD may be carried out from these aspects in the future.

  • Codebook-Based Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter Wave Multiuser Systems
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 1053-587X .- 1941-0476. ; 65:20, s. 5289-5304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems, antenna architecture limitations make it difficult to apply conventional fully digital precoding techniques but call for low-cost analog radio frequency (RF) and digital baseband hybrid precoding methods. This paper investigates joint RF-baseband hybrid precoding for the downlink of multiuser multiantenna mmWave systems with a limited number of RF chains. Two performance measures, maximizing the spectral efficiency and the energy efficiency of the system, are considered. We propose a codebook-based RF precoding design and obtain the channel state information via a beam sweep procedure. Via the codebook-based design, the original system is transformed into a virtual multiuser downlink system with the RF chain constraint. Consequently, we are able to simplify the complicated hybrid precoding optimization problems to joint codeword selection and precoder design (JWSPD) problems. Then, we propose efficient methods to address the JWSPD problems and jointly optimize the RF and baseband precoders under the two performance measures. Finally, extensive numerical results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid precoders.

  • Energy Efficient Hybrid Precoding for Millimeter Wave F-RAN with Wireless Fronthaul
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE Global Communications Conference, GLOBECOM 2018 - Proceedings. - : IEEE. - 9781538647271
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Millimeter wave (mmWave) communication emerges as an enabling technology for Gbps transmission. A further performance enhancement can be achieved by incorporating mmWave communication into fog radio access networks (F-RANs), which alleviate the large path loss of mmWave signals by shortening the distance between transmitters and users and reduce the latency by caching at enhanced remote radio heads (eRRHs). The full benefit of mmWave F-RANs is leveraged on a joint design of signal processing at the centralized baseband unit (BBU) and distributed eRRHs. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient hybrid precoding design for the downlink mmWave F-RANs with wireless fronthaul links, where digital and hybrid precoders are exploited at the BBU and eRRHs, respectively. We develop an effective method to solve the resulting difficult precoding optimization problem and provide numerical results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed mmWave F-RAN design.

  • Energy-Efficient Transceiver Design for Cache-Enabled Millimeter-Wave Systems
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 68:6, s. 3876-3889
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, network densification and edge caching become effective approaches to reduce the burden on the fronthaul links and the content delivery latency for wireless communication systems. However, maximizing system spectral efficiency cannot directly provide any insight on their energy requirements/efficiency for cache-enabled millimeter-wave (mmWave) radio access networks (RANs). In this paper, we study the design of energy-efficient transceiver, consisting of analog and digital precoder/combiner, for the delivery phase of the downlink of cache-enabled mmWave RANs. Due to the non-convexity of the delivery rate and objective, the coupling between the digital and analog precoders/combiners, and the constant module constraint on the elements of analog precoders/combiners, the problem of interest is non-convex and hard to obtain the global optimal solution, even the local optimal solution. To this end, we first overcome these challenges one-by-one and then transform the original problem into tractable one. Finally, an algorithmic framework that converges to the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker solution with provable is developed to achieve the design of energy-efficient transceiver. Numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, where fully digital precoding is used as benchmark.

  • Downlink Transmit Design for Massive MIMO LEO Satellite Communications
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 0090-6778 .- 1558-0857. ; 70:2, s. 1014-1028
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the downlink (DL) transmit design for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite communication systems, where only the slow-varying statistical channel state information is exploited at the transmitter. The channel model for the DL massive MIMO LEO satellite system is established, in which both the satellite and the user terminals (UTs) are equipped with uniform planar arrays. Observing the rank-one property of the channel matrices, we show that the single-stream precoding for each UT is the optimal choice that maximizes the ergodic sum rate. This favorable result simplifies the complicated design of transmit covariance matrices into that of precoding vectors without any loss of optimality. Then, an efficient algorithm is devised to compute the precoding vectors. Furthermore, we formulate an approximate transmit design based on the upper bound on the ergodic sum rate, for which the optimality of single-stream precoding still holds. We show that, in this case, the design of precoding vectors can be simplified into that of scalar variables, for which an effective algorithm is developed. In addition, a low-complexity learning framework is proposed for optimizing the scalar variables. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approaches can achieve significant performance gains over the existing schemes.

  • A robust MISO training sequence design
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: 2013 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP). - New York : IEEE. - 9781479903566 ; , s. 4564-4568
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the problem of robust training sequence design for multiple-input single-output (MISO) channel estimation is investigated. The mean-squared error (MSE) of the channel estimates is considered as a performance criterion to design an optimized training sequence which is a function of channel covariance matrix. In practice, the channel covariance matrix is not perfectly known at the transmitter side. Our goal is to take such imperfection into account and propose a robust design following the worst-case philosophy which results in finding the optimal training sequences for the least favorable channel covariance matrix within a deterministic uncertainty set. In this work, we address the formulated minimax design problem under different assumptions of the uncertainty set, and we show that for a unitarily-invariant uncertainty set, the optimally robust training sequence shares its eigenvectors with the channel covariance matrix. Furthermore, we give analytical closed-form solutions for robust training sequences if the spectral norm or nuclear norm are considered as constraints to bound the existing uncertainty.

  • On Robust Training Sequence Design for Correlated MIMO Channel Estimation
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Signals, Systems and Computers (ASILOMAR), 2012 Conference Record of the Forty Sixth Asilomar Conference on. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781467350518 ; , s. 504-507
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The problem of robust training sequence design for the purpose of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel estimation is considered. In particular, we aim to minimize the worst-case mean squared error of the channel estimates which is formulated as a minimax optimization problem. This problem is addressed efficiently using an extended barrier method under the general assumption of an arbitrary compact convex uncertainty set. Moreover, assuming a Kronecker MIMO channel and a unitarily invariant uncertainty set, the robust design problem is diagonalized which significantly lowers the dimensionality of the optimization problem. We provide numerical examples to illustrate the performance of the proposed design.

  • Robust Training Sequence Design for Correlated MIMO Channel Estimation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing. - 1053-587X .- 1941-0476. ; 62:1, s. 107-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study how to design a worst-case robust training sequence for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel estimation. We consider mean-squared error of channel estimates as the figure of merit which is a function of second-order statistics of the MIMO channel, i.e., channel covariance matrix, in order to optimize training sequences under a total power constraint. In practical applications, the channel covariance matrix is not known perfectly. Thus the main aspect of our design is to improve robustness of the training sequences against possible uncertainties in the available channel covariance matrix. Using a deterministic uncertainty model, we formulate a robust training sequence design as a minimax optimization problem where we take such imperfections into account. We investigate the robust design problem assuming the general case of an arbitrarily correlated MIMO channel and a non-empty compact convex uncertainty set. We prove that such a problem admits a globally optimal solution by exploiting the convex-concave structure of the objective function, and propose numerical algorithms to address the robust training design problem. We proceed the analysis by considering multiple-input single-output (MISO) channels and Kronecker structured MIMO channels along with unitarily-invariant uncertainty sets. For these scenarios, we show that the problem is diagonalized by the eigenvectors of the nominal covariance matrices so that the robust design is significantly simplified from a complex matrix-variable problem to a real vector-variable power allocation problem. For the MISO channel, we provide closed-form solutions for the robust training sequences with the uncertainty sets defined by the spectral norm and nuclear norm.

  • Beam Structured Signal Detection for HF Skywave Massive MIMO Communications
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 IEEE 98th Vehicular Technology Conference, VTC 2023-Fall - Proceedings. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc..
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate signal detection for HF skywave massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. We first introduce beam based channel model (BBCM) in the space domain and reveal the sparsity of the channel in the space-beam domain. Based on the BBCM in the space domain, we propose a beam structured detector (BSD) for each subcarrier. Specifically, we prove that the space domain detector design can be transformed to that of a beam domain detector without sacrificing optimality, and the asymptotically optimal space domain detector is beam structured with a low-dimensional beam domain detector, thus significantly reducing the design and implementation complexities. Furthermore, we provide a beam selection criterion to choose the beams that are used for the BSD. Simulation results demonstrate the low complexity and satisfactory performance of the proposed detector.
