  • AI perceives like a local : predicting citizen deprivation perception using satellite imagery
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: npj Urban Sustainability. - : Springer Nature. - 2661-8001. ; 4:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deprived urban areas, commonly referred to as ‘slums,’ are the consequence of unprecedented urbanisation. Previous studies have highlighted the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Earth Observation (EO) in capturing physical aspects of urban deprivation. However, little research has explored AI’s ability to predict how locals perceive deprivation. This research aims to develop a method to predict citizens’ perception of deprivation using satellite imagery, citizen science, and AI. A deprivation perception score was computed from slum-citizens’ votes. Then, AI was used to model this score, and results indicate that it can effectively predict perception, with deep learning outperforming conventional machine learning. By leveraging AI and EO, policymakers can comprehend the underlying patterns of urban deprivation, enabling targeted interventions based on citizens’ needs. As over a quarter of the global urban population resides in slums, this tool can help prioritise citizens’ requirements, providing evidence for implementing urban upgrading policies aligned with SDG-11.

  • Is It All the Same? : Mapping and Characterizing Deprived Urban Areas Using WorldView-3 Superspectral Imagery. A Case Study in Nairobi, Kenya
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Remote Sensing. - : MDPI. - 2072-4292. ; 13:24
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past two decades, Earth observation (EO) data have been utilized for studying the spatial patterns of urban deprivation. Given the scope of many existing studies, it is still unclear how very-high-resolution EO data can help to improve our understanding of the multidimensionality of deprivation within settlements on a city-wide scale. In this work, we assumed that multiple facets of deprivation are reflected by varying morphological structures within deprived urban areas and can be captured by EO information. We set out by staying on the scale of an entire city, while zooming into each of the deprived areas to investigate deprivation through land cover (LC) variations. To test the generalizability of our workflow, we assembled multiple WorldView-3 datasets (multispectral and shortwave infrared) with varying numbers of bands and image features, allowing us to explore computational efficiency, complexity, and scalability while keeping the model architecture consistent. Our workflow was implemented in the city of Nairobi, Kenya, where more than sixty percent of the city population lives in deprived areas. Our results indicate that detailed LC information that characterizes deprivation can be mapped with an accuracy of over seventy percent by only using RGB-based image features. Including the near-infrared (NIR) band appears to bring significant improvements in the accuracy of all classes. Equally important, we were able to categorize deprived areas into varying profiles manifested through LC variability using a gridded mapping approach. The types of deprivation profiles varied significantly both within and between deprived areas. The results could be informative for practical interventions such as land-use planning policies for urban upgrading programs.

  • Chan-Chuang and resistance exercise for drug rehabilitation : a randomized controlled trial among Chinese male methamphetamine users
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Frontiers In Public Health. - : World Academic Publishing Co., Limited. - 2296-2565. ; 11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVE: To examine the health benefits of Chan-Chuang and resistance exercise.METHODS: We deployed an 8-week randomized controlled trial, in which 76 male methamphetamine users were allocated to control (n = 25), Chan-Chuang (n = 26), and residence exercise groups (n = 25). Our primary outcomes were drug craving, mental wellbeing, sleep quality, heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP). Our secondary outcomes were body mass index (BMI), vital capacity, grip strength, balance, and vertical jump.RESULTS: Chan-Chuang exercise resulted in reduced HR, DBP, and MAP, along with improvements in vital capacity, grip strength, and balance compared to the control group. Resistance exercise reduced SBP and MAP, and also improved vital capacity, grip strength, balance, and vertical jump.CONCLUSION: These findings may support the role of Chan-Chuang and resistance exercise in maintaining the physical fitness of methamphetamine users at mandatory detention centers.

  • VEGF receptor-2 Y951 signaling and a role for the adapter molecule TSAd in tumor angiogenesis.
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: EMBO J. - 0261-4189. ; 24:13, s. 2342-53
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) activation by VEGF-A is essential in vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. We have generated a pan-phosphorylation site map of VEGFR-2 and identified one major tyrosine phosphorylation site in the kinase insert (Y951), in addition to two major sites in the C-terminal tail (Y1175 and Y1214). In developing vessels, phosphorylation of Y1175 and Y1214 was detected in all VEGFR-2-expressing endothelial cells, whereas phosphorylation of Y951 was identified in a subset of vessels. Phosphorylated Y951 bound the T-cell-specific adapter (TSAd), which was expressed in tumor vessels. Mutation of Y951 to F and introduction of phosphorylated Y951 peptide or TSAd siRNA into endothelial cells blocked VEGF-A-induced actin stress fibers and migration, but not mitogenesis. Tumor vascularization and growth was reduced in TSAd-deficient mice, indicating a critical role of Y951-TSAd signaling in pathological angiogenesis.

  • A novel gas turbine simulator for testing hybrid solar-Brayton energy systems
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Energy Conversion and Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0196-8904 .- 1879-2227. ; 268
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel gas turbine simulator is developed to establish controllable boundaries for investigating the characteristics of key components in gas turbine based hybrid energy systems under different operating conditions. The gas turbine simulator consists of a compressed air system, an electrical heater, a mass flow controller, a proportional solenoid valve, a dual-flow choked nozzle, and a PLC-based control system. With the proposed control strategy, the fluid parameters, such as temperature, mass flow rate, and pressure, can be automatically regulated to simulate the boundary conditions of a gas turbine under various workloads. Experimental results for both cold and hot states have validated the capabilities of the gas turbine simulator to deliver convergent control results with fast response. The gas turbine simulator has demonstrated considerable performance in stabilizing system boundaries with the precision in terms of pressure control reaching +/- 0.004 bar for steady states, and +/- 0.018 bar to +/- 0.076 bar for transient states with mass flow and temperature perturbations. The gas turbine simulator can also accurately track linear and nonlinear trajectories during operating point migrations, and effectively limit deviations within +/- 0.037 bar.

  • Isolation and characterization of a stress responsive small GTP-binding protein AhRabG3b in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.)
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Euphytica. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0014-2336 .- 1573-5060. ; 189:2, s. 161-172
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rab7 is a member of small GTP-binding protein family involved in intracellular vesicle trafficking from late endosome to vacuole, some of them are found to be responsive by different environmental stresses. Here we report the isolation of a Rab7 (RabG3b) cDNA from peanut (Arachis hypogaea). Overexpression of the open reading frame (ORF) of Rab7 cDNA encoding 205 amino acids in E. coli conferred the cells tolerance to various abiotic stresses. Transcription of AhRabG3b was differentially up-regulated by different environmental stimuli such as cold, dehydration, NaCl and the plant hormone ABA. Overexpression of the AhRabG3b exhibited enhanced tolerance to drought and salinity stresses in transgenic peanut. These results suggested that the AhRabG3b be a potential candidate gene responsible for both salinity and dehydration tolerance in cultivated peanut.

  • Putting the Invisible on the Map : Low-Cost Earth Observation for Mapping and Characterizing Deprived Urban Areas (Slums)
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Urban Inequalities from Space. - : Springer. - 9783031491825 - 9783031491832 ; , s. 119-137
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is estimated that more than half of city dwellers in sub-Saharan Africa currently live in deprived urban areas, often called slums or informal settlements, although these terms cover different urban realities. While the first target of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 is “to ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums,” there is a huge gap in timely spatial data to support evidence-based policies and monitor progress toward that objective. In this study, we document the potential of Earth Observation (EO) for mapping and characterizing deprived urban areas (DUAs) to narrow this gap. First, we provide a synthesis of user requirements that can be met without resorting to ancillary sources such as censuses and socioeconomic surveys, and we propose a list of cost criteria that should be minimized in EO workflows. Next, we present the city-scale and DUA-scale workflows that we developed based on three case studies and an assessment of their suitability for supporting pro-poor policies, in light of the cost criteria. We also share the main lessons learned and propose some avenues for future research.
