  • Robust estimation of bacterial cell count from optical density
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Communications Biology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2399-3642. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optical density (OD) is widely used to estimate the density of cells in liquid culture, but cannot be compared between instruments without a standardized calibration protocol and is challenging to relate to actual cell count. We address this with an interlaboratory study comparing three simple, low-cost, and highly accessible OD calibration protocols across 244 laboratories, applied to eight strains of constitutive GFP-expressing E. coli. Based on our results, we recommend calibrating OD to estimated cell count using serial dilution of silica microspheres, which produces highly precise calibration (95.5% of residuals <1.2-fold), is easily assessed for quality control, also assesses instrument effective linear range, and can be combined with fluorescence calibration to obtain units of Molecules of Equivalent Fluorescein (MEFL) per cell, allowing direct comparison and data fusion with flow cytometry measurements: in our study, fluorescence per cell measurements showed only a 1.07-fold mean difference between plate reader and flow cytometry data.

  • Manipulating the Optoelectronic Properties of Quasi-type II CuInS2/CdS Core/Shell Quantum Dots for Photoelectrochemical Cell Applications
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials and Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8244 .- 1944-8252. ; 12:32, s. 36277-36286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Colloidal core/shell heterostructured quantum dots (QDs) possessing quasi-type II band structure have demonstrated effective surface passivation and prolonged exciton lifetime, leading to enhanced charge separation/transfer efficiencies that are promising for photovoltaic device applications. Herein, we synthesized CuInS2 (CIS)/CdS core/shell heterostructured QDs and manipulated the optoelectronic properties via controlling the CdS shell thickness. The shell-thickness-dependent optical properties indicate the existence of a quasi-type II band structure in such core/shell QDs, which was verified by ultrafast spectroscopy and theoretical simulations. These quasi-type II core/shell QDs having various shell thicknesses are used as light absorbers for the fabrication of solar-driven QDs-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices, exhibiting an optimized photocurrent density of ∼6.0 mA/cm2 and excellent stability under simulated AM 1.5G solar illumination. The results demonstrate that quasi-type II CIS/CdS core/shell heterostructured QDs with tailored optoelectronic properties are promising to realize high-performance QDs-based solar energy conversion devices for the production of solar fuels.

  • Facile Synthesis of Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Heterojunctions of Glycolated Conjugated Polymer-TiO 2−X for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Small. - 1613-6810 .- 1613-6829. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The utilization of the organic–inorganic hybrid photocatalysts for water splitting has gained significant attention due to their ability to combine the advantages of both materials and generate synergistic effects. However, they are still far from practical application due to the limited understanding of the interactions between these two components and the complexity of their preparation process. Herein, a facial approach by combining a glycolated conjugated polymer with a TiO2−X mesoporous sphere to prepare high-efficiency hybrid photocatalysts is presented. The functionalization of conjugated polymers with hydrophilic oligo (ethylene glycol) side chains can not only facilitate the dispersion of conjugated polymers in water but also promote the interaction with TiO2−X forming stable heterojunction nanoparticles. An apparent quantum yield of 53.3% at 365 nm and a hydrogen evolution rate of 35.7 mmol h−1 g−1 is achieved by the photocatalyst in the presence of Pt co-catalyst. Advanced photophysical studies based on femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and in situ, XPS analyses reveal the charge transfer mechanism at type II heterojunction interfaces. This work shows the promising prospect of glycolated polymers in the construction of hybrid heterojunctions for photocatalytic hydrogen production and offers a deep understanding of high photocatalytic performance by such heterojunction photocatalysts.

  • Safety Decision of Running Speed Based on Real-time Weather
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 IEEE intelligent vehicles symposium (IV). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 212-217
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The safety of autonomous vehicles is hard to ensure in adverse weather since the sensors will degrade drastically. Setting a variable speed limit based on real-time weather condition is the most efficient method to make the vehicle safe. But most current speed limit methods are based on human visibility rather than the sensor, which is not suitable for autonomous vehicles. Thus, it is necessary to explore the performance of sensors in different weathers and propose a speed limit method based on sensor performance. Safety decisions will be made based on the calculated speed limit to ensure safety. This paper describes how to make safety decisions based on sensor performance and road conditions in real-time. The experiment explores the degradation of different sensors, and variable speed limit methods are proposed for rainy and foggy days. MPC controller is used to generate safety decisions.

  • Effect of acidosis on adipose-derived stem cell impairment and gene expression
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Regenerative Therapy. - 2352-3204. ; 25, s. 331-343
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on disappointing results of stem cell-based application in clinical trials for patients with critical limb ischemia, we hypothesized that the acidic environment might be the key factor limiting cell survival and function. In the present study, we used microdialysis to determine presence of acidosis and metabolic imbalance in critical ischemia. Moreover, we explored the effect of extracellular acidosis on adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) at molecular and transcriptional level. Our data demonstrate that low pH negatively regulates cell proliferation and survival, also, it results in cell cycle arrest, mitochondrial dynamics disorder, DNA damage as well as the impairment of proangiogenic function in a pH-dependent manner. Further transcriptome profiling identified the pivotal signaling pathways and hub genes in response to acidosis. Collectively, these findings provide strong evidences for a critical role of acidosis in ADSCs impairment with ischemic condition and suggest treatments focus on tissue pH balance and acidosis-mediated hub genes may have therapeutic potential in stem cell-based application.

  • A study of intrinsic amorphous silicon thin film deposited on flexible polymer substrates by magnetron sputtering
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids. - : Elsevier BV. - 0022-3093 .- 1873-4812. ; 449, s. 125-132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amorphous silicon (a-Si) has gained its popularity in thin film Solar cell fabrication for its high absorption coefficient, high applicability on flexible substrates and practical feasibility for low-cost roll-to-roll mass fabrication. Working as the intrinsic layer, the optical-electrical characteristics of amorphous silicon film is crucial to the cell performance. In this work, the amorphous silicon film has been fabricated on PET substrate by magnetron sputtering method. The main optical-electrical characteristics have been systematically investigated under different fabrication conditions (sputtering power, working pressure, working temperature). The results indicate that the deposition rate increases remarkably from 1.88 to 834 nm/min with the sputtering power increasing from 60 W to 120 W, while the light transmission rate decreases from 86% to 46% in the visible spectrum range (390 nm to 780 nm). Theoretical calculations have been carried out, showing a decreasing deposition rate under an increasing working pressure. A rising temperature provides a higher deposition rate and lower trans-mittance in the certain range. The optimized processing parameters in the fabrication of amorphous silicon thin film are obtained for high photoelectric property on flexible substrates.

  • Bamboo-charcoal-loaded graphitic carbon nitride for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International journal of hydrogen energy. - : Elsevier. - 0360-3199 .- 1879-3487. ; 47:6, s. 3733-3740
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Crystalline graphitic carbon nitride is an excellent photocatalyst for hydrogen production due to its non-toxicity, stability, elemental abundance, and visible-light response. Herein, we present a new type of composite photocatalysts, eco-friendly bamboo-charcoal-loaded graphitic carbon nitrides to accelerate the separation of electron-hole pairs. The suitable loading of bamboo charcoal on graphitic carbon nitrides shows an increased specific surface area from 85 to 120 m2 g-1, and excellent visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of 4.1 mmol g-1 h-1, which is 2.3 times higher than that of pristine carbon nitride (1.8 mmol g-1 h-1). Under irradiation, the photogenerated electrons fast migrate from graphitic carbon nitride to bamboo charcoal through an ohmic contact between them, reducing the recombination of electron-hole pairs. This study highlights the effect of carbonaceous material loading on photocatalytic activity of carbon nitrides and opens an avenue to design efficient loaded photocatalysts with natural abundant materials.

  • Microstructure investigations of Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 dual-phase high-entropy alloy under Fe ions irradiation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Nuclear Materials. - : ELSEVIER. - 0022-3115 .- 1873-4820. ; 552
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An Fe50Mn30Co10Cr10 dual-phase high-entropy alloy (DP-HEA) was irradiated at room temperature with 3 MeV Fe ions to a dose of 50 displacement per atom (dpa). Potentials of special elemental designed DP-HEAs with low stacking fault energy (SFE) as promising candidate materials for future nuclear energy systems are evaluated. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis finds that FCC gamma-gamma, HCP epsilon-epsilon twinning structures and FCC gamma-HCP epsilon co-existed structures of the DP-HEA, which correlate with the combined high strength and high ductility featured by this alloy, remain stable under a displacement damage of 50 dpa. No elemental segregation after irradiation was detected by energy dispersive spectroscopy. The results indicate that TWIP and TRIP mechanisms, owned by many other DP-HEAs, may still work effectively, and the materials still possess the merits of combined high strength and ductility brought by TWIP and TRIP mechanisms under irradiation conditions. Defects free channels (DFCs) and abundant Lomer-Cottrell (L-C) locks are observed in the irradiated samples after tensile deformation. The immobile L-C locks restrict DFCs growth, prevent the pile-up of dislocation along grain boundaries, thus sustaining dislocations in the grain interior. This study provides a new strategy to improve simultaneously the irradiation resistance and mechanical properties of structural materials by introducing the TWIP and TRIP mechanisms. • Comparison and application of SOFM, fuzzy c-means and k-means clustering algorithms for natural soil environment regionalization in China
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Environmental Research. - : Elsevier. - 0013-9351 .- 1096-0953. ; 216
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soil attributes and their environmental drivers exhibit different patterns in different geographical directions, along with distinct regional characteristics, which may have important effects on substance migration and transformation such as organic matter and soil elements or the environmental impacts of pollutants. Therefore, regional soil characteristics should be considered in the process of regionalization for environmental management. However, no comprehensive evaluation or systematic classification of the natural soil environment has been established for China. Here, we established an index system for natural soil environmental regionalization (NSER) by combining literature data obtained based on bibliometrics with the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Based on the index system, we collected spatial distribution data for 14 indexes at the national scale. In addition, three clustering algorithms—self-organizing feature mapping (SOFM), fuzzy c-means (FCM) and k-means (KM)—were used to classify and define the natural soil environment. We imported four cluster validity indexes (CVI) to evaluate different models: Davies-Bouldin index (DB), Silhouette index (Sil) and Calinski-Harabasz index (CH) for FCM and KM, clustering quality index (CQI) for SOFM. Analysis and comparison of the results showed that when the number of clusters was 13, the FCM clustering algorithm achieved the optimal clustering results (DB = 1.16, Sil = 0.78, CH = 6.77 × 106), allowing the natural soil environment of China to be divided into 12 regions with distinct characteristics. Our study provides a set of comprehensive scientific research methods for regionalization research based on spatial data, it has important reference value for improving soil environmental management based on local conditions in China.
