  • Microcirculation and somatosensory profiling of patients with periodontitis : a preliminary case control report
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Clinical Oral Investigations. - : Springer. - 1432-6981 .- 1436-3771. ; 25, s. 1223-1233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this preliminary study was to explore blood microcirculation and somatosensory profiles in periodontitis patients before and after non-surgical periodontal therapy.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients (10 men and 10 women, 20 to 30 years old) and 20 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were included. Non-surgical periodontal therapy was performed for all patients. Clinical examination including pocket probing depth (PPD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), and bleeding on probing (BOP) were performed at baseline (BL), 1 week (1W), and 4 weeks (4W) after non-surgical periodontal therapy on 6 sites of tooth 32 and 42. Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and quantitative sensory testing (QST) were applied at the attached gingiva of tooth 32 and 42 at BL, 1W, and 4W after non-surgical periodontal therapy. Data were analyzed with a two-way mixed-model of ANOVA.RESULTS: The PPD, CAL and BOP significantly improved after non-surgical periodontal therapy (p < 0.001). Periodontitis patients demonstrated a higher tissue microvascular blood cell concentration (p = 0.015) and a significant gain in thermal (p = 0.037) and mechanical (p = 0.003) somatosensory function compared to controls. After non-surgical periodontal therapy, the flux (p = 0.002) and speed (p = 0.008) of blood flow decreased significantly and thermal (p = 0.029) and mechanical (p < 0.001) somatosensory function were reversed.CONCLUSION: Gingival microcirculation and somatosensory function seem impaired in patients with periodontitis and are reversed following non-surgical periodontal therapy.CLINICAL RELEVANCE: LDF and QST may be appropriate tools to further characterize gingival inflammation and treatment responses in periodontitis.

  • Adjunctive effects of laser therapy on somatosensory function and vasomotor regulation of periodontal tissues in patients with periodontitis : A randomized controlled clinical trial
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Periodontology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0022-3492 .- 1943-3670. ; 91:10, s. 1310-1317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The purpose of this prospective study was to compare the changes in periodontal somatosensory function and microcirculation in patients with periodontitis following initial treatment with scaling and root planing (SRP) with or without adjuvant laser therapy.METHODS: Twenty-four patients suffering from periodontitis were recruited and randomly allocated into a split-mouth design to either SRP combined laser therapy side (test side) or SRP only side (control side). All treatments were performed by the same investigator at a single visit. Laser Doppler Flowmetry (LDF) and Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) were performed at baseline (W0), 1 week (1W), 2 weeks (2W), and 4 weeks (4W) after treatment on both sides of the attached gingiva of the maxillary lateral incisor. Clinical examination including pocket probing depth (PPD) and bleeding on probing (BOP) was performed at W0, 2W, and 4W on both sides. Data were analyzed with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).RESULTS: The PPD and BOP significantly improved after treatment (P <0.001). The LDF values were significantly decreased on both sides at all follow-up time points (P <0.001), temperature was increased only on the test side (P = 0.017) whereas there was no significant change on the control side (P = 0.792). Significantly less sensitivity was observed for all QST parameters (P <0.030) except for warmth detection after treatment.CONCLUSION: Adjunctive use of laser therapy did not provide any significant clinically advantage or additional effects on the recovery of periodontal somatosensory function or gingival microcirculation in the present study. • 2004
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0020-7543 .- 1366-588X. ; 42:11, s. 2279-2287
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A quick and reliable assessment of machined surface finish is required for quality control in shop floors. This paper presents a machine-vision-based approach to inspect the turned surface in finishing operations. The distribution pattern from a laser scattering image is used to characterize the topography of the surface finish and to set criteria for cutting tool replacement. Compared with conventional surface inspections, this approach gives a feasible solution to assure machined surface finish and to establish reasonable criteria for cutting tool replacement in production.

  • On-line Calibration of Positioning Accuracy of CNC Lathe Using a Double-frequency Laser Interferometer
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: International journal of computer applications in technology. - : InderScience Publishers. - 0952-8091 .- 1741-5047. ; 24:4, s. 212-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Positioning accuracy is an important factor affecting the performance of CNC machine tools. Targeting a high positioning accuracy, a fast and effective calibration technique is in an increasing demand from both machine tool users and manufacturers. This paper introduces an on-line calibration approach to dynamically evaluate the positioning accuracy of a CNC lathe through statistical estimation. A double-frequency laser interferometer is configured to measure the respective motions in the lathe's two perpendicular axes during the machining process, triggered by a cutting force dynamometer. Positioning accuracycalibration is realised by comparing the nominal positions from the CNC motion controller to their actual values measured by the laser interferometer system. Compared to that achieved at the machine idle state or the free-running state using conventional techniques, this on-line calibration approach provides a more efficient way to get a real picture of the actual performance of a CNC machine tool under its working condition. It also gives a truthful reference to effectively compensate positioning errors of the CNC machine tool.

  • Logistics-involved QoS-aware service composition in cloud manufacturing with deep reinforcement learning
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Robotics and Computer-Integrated Manufacturing. - : PERGAMON-ELSEVIER SCIENCE LTD. - 0736-5845 .- 1879-2537. ; 67
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cloud manufacturing is a new manufacturing model that aims to provide on-demand manufacturing services to consumers over the Internet. Service composition is an essential issue as well as an important technique in cloud manufacturing (CMfg) that supports construction of larger-granularity, value-added services by combining a number of smaller-granularity services to satisfy consumers' complex requirements. Meta-heuristics algorithms such as genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, and ant colony algorithm are frequently employed for addressing service composition issues in cloud manufacturing. These algorithms, however, require complex design flows and painstaking parameter tuning, and lack adaptability to dynamic environment. Deep re-inforcement learning (DRL) provides an alternative approach for solving cloud manufacturing service compo-sition (CMfg-SC) issues. DRL as model-free artificial intelligent methods enables a system to learn optimal service composition solutions through training, which can therefore circumvent the aforementioned problems with meta-heuristics algorithms. This paper is dedicated to exploring possible applications of DRL in CMfg-SC. A logistics-involved QoS-aware DRL-based CMfg-SC is proposed. A dueling Deep Q-Network (DQN) with prior-itized replay named PD-DQN is designed as the DRL algorithm. Effectiveness, robustness, adaptability, and scalability of PD-DQN are investigated, and compared with that of the basic DQN and Q-learning. Experimental results indicate that PD-DQN is able to effectively address the CMfg-SC problem.

  • Quality Assessment and Rehabilitation of Mountain Forest in the Chongli Winter Olympic Games Area, China
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Forests. - : MDPI AG. - 1999-4907. ; 13:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spurred by the degraded forest in the 2022 Chongli Winter Olympic Games area, the Chinese government initiated a national program for mountain forest rehabilitation. We developed a method to assess the quality of mountain forests using an index system composed of stand structure, site conditions, and landscape aesthetics at three criteria levels. The method involves index weights determined by the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy method. The results show that landscape aesthetics was the most important measure for the criterion layer. Slope aspect and naturalness were the most and second-most important indices, respectively, for the alternative layer. The quality of the mountain forest in the Chongli area was divided into four grades. The area had 7.8% with high quality, 46.7% with medium quality, 36.6% with low quality, and 8.9% with inferior quality. In total 76.6% of the damaged forest were distributed on sloping and steep sloping ground at 1700 to 2050 m altitude, and Betula platyphylla Sukaczev and Larix gmelinii var. principis-rupprechtii (Mayr) Pilg. were the predominating trees. The damaged forest was divided into over-dense, over-sparse, degraded, inappropriate tree species, and inferior landscape forest. For different types of damaged forest, corresponding modification measures were proposed. The methods developed in this study can be used for rehabilitation projects to improve the quality of degraded forests in mountainous temperate areas.

  • Two-In-One Method for Graphene Transfer: Simplified Fabrication Process for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1944-8252 .- 1944-8244. ; 10:8, s. 7289-7295
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Graphene as one of the most promising transparent electrode materials has been successfully applied in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, traditional poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) transfer method usually results in hardly removed polymeric residues on the graphene surface, which induces unwanted leakage current, poor diode behavior, and even device failure. In this work, we proposed a facile and efficient two-in-one method to obtain clean graphene and fabricate OLEDs, in which the poly(9,9-di-n-octylfluorene-alt-(1,4-phenylene-(4-sec-butylphenyl)imino)-1,4-phenylene) (TFB) layer was inserted between the graphene and PMMA film both as a protector during the graphene transfer and a hole-injection layer in OLEDs. Finally, green OLED devices were successfully fabricated on the PMMA-free graphene/TFB film, and the device luminous efficiency was increased from 64.8 to 74.5 cd/A by using the two-in-one method. Therefore, the proposed two-in-one graphene transfer method realizes a high-efficient graphene transfer and device fabrication process, which is also compatible with the roll-to-roll manufacturing. It is expected that this work can enlighten the design and fabrication of the graphene-based optoelectronic devices.

  • Ingår i: BMJ Open. - : BMJ. - 2044-6055. ; 11:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a highly prevalent disabling joint disease. Intra-articular stem cell therapy is increasingly being used for treating KOA with little high-quality evidence to support its use. The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness of allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells (Cymerus MSCs) for treating symptomatic tibiofemoral KOA and improving knee structure over 24 months. Methods and analysis The Stem Cell injections for symptomatic relief and strUctural improvement in people with Tibiofemoral knee OsteoaRthritis study is a phase III, multi-centre, parallel, superiority, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, which will be conducted in Sydney and Hobart, Australia. 440 participants (220 per arm) aged over 40 years with painful KOA and mild to moderate structural change on X-ray (Kellgren and Lawrence grade 2 or 3) with medial minimum joint space width between 1 and 4 mm in the study knee will be recruited from the community and randomly allocated to receive either intra-articular MSCs or saline at baseline, week 3 and week 52. The coprimary outcomes will be the proportion of participants achieving patient-acceptable symptom state for knee pain at 24 months and quantitative central medial femorotibial compartment cartilage thickness change from baseline to 24 months. Main secondary outcomes include change in knee pain, Patient Global Assessment, physical function, quality of life and other structural changes. Additional data for cost-effectiveness analysis will also be recorded. Adverse events will be monitored throughout the study. The primary analysis will be conducted using modified intention-to-treat. Ethics and dissemination This protocol has been approved by The University of Sydney (USYD) Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) #: 2020/119 and The University of Tasmania (UTAS) HREC #: H0021868. All participants will be required to provide informed consent. Dissemination will occur through conferences, social media, and scientific publications.

  • A Sensor-Driven Approach to Distributed Shop Floor Planning and Control
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dynamic Systems and Control Division (Publication) DSC. ; , s. 1175-1182
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The objective of this research is to develop methodology and framework for distributed shop floor planning, real-time monitoring, and remote device control supported by intelligent sensors. An intelligent sensor serves runtime data from bottom up to facilitate high-level decision-making. It assures that correct decisions are made in a timely manner, if compared with the best estimations of engineers. Being an adaptive system, a so-designed framework will improve the flexibility and dynamism of shop floor operations, and provide a seamless integration among process planning, resource scheduling, job execution, process monitoring, and device control. This paper presents principles of the methodology, details in architecture design, module interactions, information flow, and a proof-of-concept prototype implementation.

  • Mirna mediated regulation and interaction between plants and pathogens
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Molecular Sciences. - : MDPI. - 1661-6596 .- 1422-0067. ; 22:6, s. 1-13
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plants have evolved diverse molecular mechanisms that enable them to respond to a wide range of pathogens. It has become clear that microRNAs, a class of short single-stranded RNA molecules that regulate gene expression at the transcriptional or post-translational level, play a crucial role in coordinating plant-pathogen interactions. Specifically, miRNAs have been shown to be involved in the regulation of phytohormone signals, reactive oxygen species, and NBS-LRR gene expression, thereby modulating the arms race between hosts and pathogens. Adding another level of complexity, it has recently been shown that specific lncRNAs (ceRNAs) can act as decoys that interact with and modulate the activity of miRNAs. Here we review recent findings regarding the roles of miRNA in plant defense, with a focus on the regulatory modes of miRNAs and their possible applications in breeding pathogen-resistance plants including crops and trees. Special emphasis is placed on discussing the role of miRNA in the arms race between hosts and pathogens, and the interaction between disease-related miRNAs and lncRNAs.
